they never said how much the car was sold for at the end which I thought was odd (I saw on another forum that it went for big money - 23 grand!) I believe they follow the auctions in the last episode, as a insight this is the results from the Coy's auction of the cars, I think the first 6 are theirs. www.coys.co.uk/past-auctions.php?auctionID=41

I think what will be interesting for this show is the subject change to the Land Rover next week. I'm not sure it'll be quite so entertaining when people aren't racing and going sideways? I appreciate that the green lane scene is big, but it's still just driving slowly around mud tracks and through fords. So will watch with interest.
I think WD has the jump because they've already done pretty much all the cars this show is doing, but any car show that's watchable, is good in my books.
As for fast and loud, used to really enjoy the show until I went there. After meeting the crew, looking around the shop and speaking with the director, it's kind of ruined it for me. I still watch, but not with as much interest these days.
And 8k for that escort. I know these cars are commanding mega money these days, but I watched with great interest the age of all the people they were interviewing on the show and now fear for anyone who see's these cars as long term investments (unless they are ultra rare versions that is).

Assume it's like why I don't want to meet Jeremy Clarkson, as I quite like watching him on the telly lol.

Assume it's like why I don't want to meet Jeremy Clarkson, as I quite like watching him on the telly lol. I met Jeremy Clarkson about 10 years ago and again 2 years ago and you won't be disappointed, get him on to a subject he feels strongly about and you're all set. As for fast and loud, I asked the director a simple question "Is it a garage first and a TV show second, or the other way around?". His answer was that it's a TV show, nothing else. When you hear that, it takes something from it. We took a 500 mile detour whilst doing route 66 last year and arrived to the shop on the day they were officially opening the bar and grill and doing the ugly kid shoot. We got an invite to the opening of the bar, but decided to give it a swerve as it was also just a marketing train. As a side note to that, we bought some t-shirts and hoodies whilst we were there and during the 20 minutes we were in their shop, it must have taken $1400 dollars in merchandising (that was a Monday morning at 11am!). So the shop probably makes 10k a day alone......

And 8k for that escort. I know these cars are commanding mega money these days, but I watched with great interest the age of all the people they were interviewing on the show and now fear for anyone who see's these cars as long term investments (unless they are ultra rare versions that is). Good point, it goes for everything from Raleigh Choppers, FS1Es, Escorts VW Campers and so on, most people assume that as they get older or rarer the value must go up.
If rarity and age alone mattered then Allegros or any 50s saloon would be worth loads, 30s cars would all be worth mega money, but value is more about what is fashionable and what people of an age to have disposable cash reminisce about.
To identify what will really be collectable and worth a few quid in the future think about finding an unspoiled example of what young people wish they could have had in recent years but struggled to achieve, for example a Citroen Saxo VTR perhaps (there are probably better examples).
I think the Raleigh Chopper is a perfect example, some models are worth thousands because 30 and 40 somethings remember them with rose tinted spectacles, they can now afford to buy one (pushing prices up), can still ride it and attend events, and use their kids as an excuse with the missus to indulge. When those folks are retired there will be a lot less demand, the people with kids then will remember later things.
My thought is either have them because you enjoy them, or if you want an investment don't buy what is already hugely fashionable, think about what is at the bottom of its curve now and will come back up, then look for the best unmolested one you can find.

Oh my......I thought I was the only person who thought like this, so it's good to know I'm not alone.
I guess we're starting to see the 80's hot hatches get on the move now, with mk1 golf and 205 gti's going for mad money, so it backs up what Chris is saying above (I also think you're right with the saxo and the same will go for the 106 gti).
Going back to the 8k escort, when I was 17 I had a mk2 escort as my first car. It cost £75 and had an MOT. I used it for a bit and then bought a mk1 mexico for £500 with MOT and tax. All I did with those cars was enjoy them. I used to spend hours at the local roundabout perfecting powerslides and handbrake turns. They were crude cars, only really any good for beating on and having fun in.
How people feel about saxo's and corsa's now, is how people viewed escorts back then. They just weren't cool cars and were more often than not driven by a certain type of person, mainly because, they were cheap!
I'm a member of a couple of groups on facebook for escorts, mk1 golfs and Peugeot gti's (as I always like to keep a little eye open for a project) and it's funny how the people are still the same sorts. Mk1 golf and Peugeot gti groups are always very civil, good vocabulary and want to help each other and seem fairly non judgmental. The same can't be said for the escort group, it always seems to be full of drama and arguments.
So, 8k for the escort, but if any of you have bought that car and chucked it into a resto company for the works to be done on it like that one, what would you have expected the bill to be for the work?

mk1 and mk2 escorts have been seen as cool going back 20 years at least
I'd hardly say they are only currently in fashion

Yeah, but if they consistently sell at that price then that's what they're worth. No point getting grumpy about economics.

Yes, I found him a bit luvvie - I was cringing when he decided to play 'saarf London wideboy' when he met the Harris's. I liked Ant though. All in all, a great programme. I've only seen the Escort episode so far - holds no interest for SWMBO so I have to watch it alone! - but have series-linked it. Looking forward to the rest of the series.

The only people moaning about Escorts being. 25k, are those that don't have one. You all had the chance to own one if you wanted to, I myself have an RS2000, bring it on. It happens with lots of cars, in 2006 I went to look at a 1970 Aston DBS, it was 11k, I didn't buy it, now they are circa 30k for a basket, you live & learn (or perhaps not)

I couldn't buy a rwd Escort my dad wouldn't let me. He never seen them through rose tinted glasses at all and said they were ok for what they were designed for and that was to move people around cheaply.
It was a coincidence that people enjoyed throwing money at them to make them half decent much the same as any 70s cheap car at the time. Chevette for example reality was the Escort was no better nor worse than the equivalent on offer from an other manufacture. How ever due to the flooding of the market of cheap shells they were abused from every rally stage in the land and when people wanted to go fast the market supplied this (supply and demand)
Any 70s rwd car is going up in price its the way things work, but the kids of the 70s that see Ari Vaternan getting the Escort sideways can now afford to push the price of Escorts up as thats what they want. Much like will happen with kids of the 80s and previously happened with kids in the 60s. Its market trends and people are paid a fortune to spot them and make money from it.
I still say buy an Impreza or Evo 6 now before prices get silly like what has happened to the Escort and Sierra Cosworths, core cars will always have the upper hand when it comes to being worth more in the long run.

on kgf, 1969 vauxhall viva HB de luxe was up for £1895, ultra rare 1973 HC viva estate de luxe was £2495. 1973 5 door escort 1300 L was up for £11395
its not down to vehicle age, its not down to vehicle condition, it most definitely isn't down to which is technically superior in the 70s or now, its just a plane old scene tax. people don't get hacked off because they are jealous of not owning one or missing out on the amazing investment potential, they probably get hacked off because of the bloated indifference between intrinsic value and instrumental value.

Really enjoyed the Escort episode, it's up there with Top Gear and Fast and Loud as the only watchable car programmes, regarding Brewer and his lesbian lover China I finally vowed never again after i watched the RX-7 wheeler dealers a few weeks back just pure cringe from start to finish what a pair of yogurts..
As for anything involving Bernie Mario or Leepu, I'd happily smack any of them in the face with a jack handle the moment they start talking, total bottom gravy from start to finish, absolutely unwatchable imho.
If i could change anything about For the love of cars, I'd have cut the police and crims bit for a touch more resto work, but i was happy enough how it was..
Looking forward to the next one
