I love this car. And I've every confidence that the next incarnation will be even better.
One question though - why change to the new bags? I understand that you're using a different compressor and "brain" - is it just a compatibility thing?
The brushed effect on the brightwork looks ace.

Cheers dude, you've always been very supportive as well as encouraging. I took a gamble on those airshocks and although they work to a certain extent they don't give me a great deal of confidence when driving, and I like to drive and corner on the fast side of things. Plus and it's a big plus, I never thought for one minute that the car would be as well received as it is, I mean I've had very encouraging comments on here, I've had more than a few people shout at me 'nice car mate' in the street and more than a few media people are clambering for photo shoots and to show the car. So what to do? Time to give the car what it deserves, full airride, bags all round, tank, compressor, switches the lot. stonio you'll find those airsprings on eBay, 'universal sport bags'. All the best Charlie ;-)

Thanks for taking the time to document everything so thoroughly, I know nothing of air suspension systems and it's very interesting to see how it all works!
I understand that the new system is going to be done without the compromises that you had to make with version 1 (although it must be a proper heartbreaker to be throwing away all that hard work!).
I guess, in simple terms, you're going from a cheap'n cheerful "universal" system, to a dogs b0ll0cks, properly engineered, top end system.
Really looking forward to seeing the updates - does paint feature in your plans?

Most of the work I had already done isn't wasted at all, infact its a massive help as I already know the tolerances I need to acheive. My raised turrets are already perfect for the damper so no adjustment needed there. My biggest problem now is in the new turret bracket as the bag sits as low as possible on the damper, plus I want to reinforce the turret as best I can to get it properly strong. Few months work ahead but the car will have a proper airride installation in the long run.

Looking forward to seeing the updates!
I was reading a couple of threads on PH & R'n'S last night - they were discussing "old school" British custom cars, jack-up kits, fur lined interiors, fog light over the axle, CB radio etc. 70's and 80's stuff mainly. That got me thinking about how many cars that are about today will be remembered in 30-40 years. Even as it stands, this will. 100%.

Sorry, I need to vent a little bit, someone on the Lotus forums has proper piszed me off! For over a year I have posted on here and there on the build, asking questions as I go mostly on the lotus forum never really has a negative comment until now, with this numb nuts view. They can be so far up their own arses it's unbelievable, fukcing cheaky numb nut dismising the build, saying I need to get it checked over by a professional mechanic. Lo9k I hold my arms up and agree thay my gamble hasn't paid off on the airshocks, so how do I go foward? I address the problem immediately and effectively with upgrading the whole system with a much more reliable full air bag system. The way I see it I've been incredibly open, honest and posted loads of photos for everyones entertainment, if you don't like it you simply don't post, right, let alone make disrespectful comments? Really piszed me off, no wonder the other modified lotus onwers don't post on there any more. I know V8 Esprit had all manor of troubles with the lotus fraternity, fukc'em, friggin' knob head.

Sorry to hear that you have been affected by single make forums, sadly this happens a lot if you don't leave your car exactly how the manufacturer made it! Which as we all know is flawed from the offset as they have to achieve a few objectives. Personally I think you've done a great job and the car looks superb inside and out. People say so much from behind a computer screen that they would never dare say o your face.
Ignore them and be the better person!

Cheers lads, I'm really really not a negative person and I look for positive in everybodies builds, and everybody has their own vision of what they see fit. It really does get under your skin though when I've been so open and helpful to anyone asking questions and I've posted so many photos on the lotus forum in the hope it can help others. I really shouldn't let it bother me cos I've got 3 publications pending (1 international) who want to feature the car, FastCar want it on their stand at Trax, and pretty much (single handedly) brought the Elite back into cool. I'll calm down in a minute...

Every single aspect of your build has been to the highest of standards imo and probably far better than some "pros" could achieve so you have every right to feel p*ssed off by negative comments from fellow so called enthusiasts especially after you have been so open and honest about everything. Your skill and can do attitude is an inspiration to many and what you have achieved to date is superb and I know that what is yet to come will be even more so. Keep up the good work.

F@ck 'em. Hate the nobbers on the lotus forums.
I have a lotus Evora, therefore not retro, I asked a question on wiring diagrams and got a barrage of abuse. Haven't bothered since.
I only come on this forum 2 see the following threads and builds
Yours!! V8 esprit Anything by oldbus And Grizz.
You have serious skills and patience with your build, don't let the bell ends annoy you. Looking forward to seeing the upgrades.

Your car your rules....only thing i would say is be happy that the work you carry out is acceptable to your insurance company. Most 'Make' forums think you should preserve the car in aspic for posterity...crack on were all watching:) Geoff

Listen mate what you have done with this car you should be very proud of imo. You get narrow minded people in every walk of life including the car world. If Colin Chapman had listened to narrow minded fools these cars would never have been made. Some people just can't help themselves, its what makes them tick, these people should be ignored! Oh and you didn't get it wrong first time, you just learned how not to do it!

If it wasn't for the moral support on RR this car would be so far back in the build that we'd still be looking at photoshop impressions. Fact is the Lotus Forum has been on the whole very welcoming to the car and the modifications, it's always one or two fools who like to think they know best and start slagging things off cos 'they know best'. In all honesty it was simply a matter of lack of finance that pushed me down the air shock route, if I had a bigger budget we'd have the full self leveling accuair full bells and whistle system in place. More than a few Lotus members have come out in support and the guy has quite honestly made himself look like a true knob especially as my thread on the lotus forum has over 20,000 page views and they've all seen his farted comments. Time to move on, it really has spurred me on now to make this car truely friggin awesome, once my airride is in and working perfectly... who rembers phase 3? Did somebody mention a Maserati engine...

You have well and truly put this obscure, long forgotten Lotus back on the map. The door-knob with the un-supportive attitude has done what exactly to help promote the marque he loves so much that no-one other then Graham Chapman himself is qualified enough to dare dream about modifying one?
Just out of idle interest, How does air-suspension compare to proper sports springs for handling?

will have to check out your thread on TLF! to be fair most of them are a good bunch of guys but a few do like to flame build threads! I got a load of curse word for drilling my brake discs! and fitting a V8 engine stick with it and give em curse word back!

I'd try asking him what he has built - probably nothing! The worst nitpickers are those who cant do it themselves - they assume that as they don't know then you can't possibly know either. They can't grasp the concept that you are a lot more intelligent and 'hands on' than they are.
Ignore the curse word.

Agreed, those that post on my thread are generally supportive and can see I'm doing my best in incredibly difficult restraints regarding time and money. There's always one tit that tries to spoils things, he's been told by the mods to stay away, haha muppet. Anyway my new front bags are almost in, just waiting on a bracket (needs welding in) and testing should be by the end of the month. Also managed to get my mx5 pod lift motors working correctly, I'll be in the garage tonight dealing with the fine adjustments. There's only 3 shows that I'm aiming for now, trax, the gathering and ultimate stance, that's the goal anyhow. All the best, Charlie :-)
