Just gauging opinion on the 4.6 P38. Having never owned one, all I've heard is bad reports, of failing engines etc. However, I've heard a few people who have owned them really rating them.
I'm in need of a new towcar. Not wanting to spend a fortune, but have seen one that looks nice, with LPG for £2500. It'll not be used as a daily, but probably most weeks at sometime or another.
So, who's owned one/ knows anyone who has? What's the over all consensus? To buy, or not to buy......

Specifically the 4.6 I can't comment on except that they sound great with a blowing exhaust. The P38 on the other hand, my lasses stepdad had one for a few years with the 2.5 BMW diesel and it was epic, towed a 24 foot twin-axle caravan like it was a trailer, was amazingly comfy and quiet, had a lovely smooth autobox and all the toys, although weirdly not leather. Wasn't exactly fast although I'm sure the 4.6 will be very different in that respect. Could get high 30's on a run as well, and again I'm sure the 4.6 will be very different in that respect. It was FAULTLESSLY reliable though, didn't suffer any of the common issues you hear of on these.

I have only one positive comment. You'll be comfortable while you're waiting for a tow.
Nasty, badly made vehicles, generally cheaply maintained, don't like being used, don't like being stood, don't like lpg, tacky dashboard, fragile electrics, avoid, avoid, avoid and save yourself the pain.
That's all.

This is why I love these boards.....such a range of views! I've had other P38's before, and didn't find them too bad on the whole. The horror stories of the 4.6 engine does put me off a bit though. Plus the fact apparently they don't like to be worked! Something strange is still drawing me towards one though, and I'm pretty sure when I've had this feeling before, I've lived to regret it. It feels a bit like the day I met my girlfriend.

I've had 3 Range Rover Classics and haven't learnt - still fancy a P38 ! It'd have to be very cheap as the only way I could live with one was to modify - replace air suspension with coils, separate aftermarket controllers for windows and central locking, engine and box swopped for 300Tdi etc. Basically get rid of the BeCM computer which seems to be the cause of most problems people experience. There again I'm skint so can't afford even a rough one !

I was actually quite gutted I didn't buy the one I mentioned above when he got rid last year. It had 58k and full service history, I think the colour was Westminster blue, and it had a Becker stereo fitted. He part exchanged the RR and the caravan for a motorhome and only got offered £2200, so he phoned me and asked if I wanted it for that but I didn't have the cash. Saw it outside the caravan place for £3995 and it was gone 4 days later!

Cheers guys. It seems pretty divided!
Regarding Shoguns/pajeros, been there, done that. They have the worst auto gearboxes ever, the 2.5TD is way under powered, and the 2.8 has head gasket issues. I`ve had a 3.5 GDI before which was good, but would only have one on LPG. 4x4 ownership seems to divide opinion more than any other car. There`s people whi swear by Discos, other wouldn`t go near them with a barge pole. In fact, name just about any large 4x4, and I`m pretty sure you`ll get people who love them, and hate them.
Having said this, I`d have a 3.2 Di-d, but they`re just too much for something that will rarely be used!

We bought an L reg Disco 5 years ago, I put up with the welding as its just trundle on and got us all over the country. No stupid electrical or electronic problems.
They're not built amazingly, they leak in and out, things break etc but at the same time, you can't run a £30,000 (or whatever a P38 was) vehicle for Fiesta money. They hide bearing and diff noise rather well. The multitude of ecus is stupid, the locks are stupid, if the boot button packs up there's no manual release, it's just a symphony of warning noises attached to a poorly built, poorly designed piece of junk.

I've had P38s before, and have found them nice rides......when they're working as they should. I've also had one with a failed BeCM and I ended up breaking it. It's more opinion on the 4.6 lump I'm trying to gauge. There are so many horror stories, I suppose you can't really form an opinion until you've owned one! Off topic a bit, I normally use the 3.0 Troopers for towing. People curse about these so much, regarding dodgy injectors etc. I've always found them to be great work horses, and the dealers still repair faulty injectors FOC. I just fancy something a bit more comfy and less agricultural in my grand old age of 31.

Yep, I'm a fan I will only say that normally I find the diesels are knackered through farm and off road abuse and the V8s, either 4.0 or 4.6 knackered through cheap upkeep. There has never been a good P38. I do see these things every day so I'm not saying this without being able to back it up. 5 years in a main dealer and 5 years in a proper garage still say get something else not a Freelander. My Land Rover money would always go in a Discovery but ideally I'd have a G Wagen. HTH Sent from my HTC Desire C using proboards

Yeah, I`m leaving this one well alone now.
Just got a reply from the seller regarding history etc.........No service record, quite a few advisories on recent MOT, not used for best part of a year. I`d be asking for trouble buying that one.
I`m still oddly attracted to them though. G Wagon prices have gone ballistic this last year. A mate is selling a 1993 one at the moment for 19 grand. It`s a nice one, but 19 grand! He`s getting interest in it too.
I might have to look at Cherokees, as these are another car I oddly quite like. I`m not sure on how well they will handle towing weight though, as they`re quite a small 4x4.

Cherokees tow well, and the 4 litre is dead simple to gas convert. Make sure they've still got a floor in them though... I thought G wagon prices were always strong the export market sees to that

They seem to be good value for what you get, certainly compared to a Disco, Patrol, Landcruiser etc .

I own an LPG 3.9 discovery now.
My parents had a 4.6 but swapped it for the 3.9 I now have.
There not as bad as people make out at all, yeah some let owners down but I will say most of that is down to poor maintenance, both of our V8s have been very well serviced and never let us down.
I would quite happily go out and turn the key in my 3.9 knowing full well it will work right, mind even if it didn't the basics of the engine doesn't really get much simpler.
My Discovery is up for sale as I fancy a Jimny or just some free funds.
