Reetoo, after uni I'm gonna get another motor, so I can relieve the golf of the daily drive duty, and hopefully fettle her/get stuck into the rusty arches, and all the bits and bobs I cant do at the moment.
What I'm after is some sorta fun, fairly economical, big, luxo barge style thing (not mahossive engined for insurance/economy purposes).
I'm currently thinking of an Omega/Carlton/Senator bimmer 5 series (maybe estate), or a e30 estate, rear wheel drive will be a bonus as I'm yet to sample the delights.
So answers on a postcard please....

e28 5 series? Extremely cheap to buy for a 518 or 520, reliable, comfortable and rwd! Retro sharknosed good looks too (although I'm biased!).
Volvo 240s are damn cool though, also reliable & cheap to buy.

Its not an estate but... If you have money now check for sale section. My weapon of choice for the past 3 years; 34 MPG, loves motorways and fair insurance. £130 more a year when I upgraded from my polo 1.0

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

^^^ I'd be tempted by a Volvo....cheap to buy, a real motorway-muncher and capable of massive miles!!

Omega estate. Get one in white for about £450, hang a luminous jacket up in the window and crawl up the motorway at 65mph for maximum fun.
Pre-facelift (1999 or thereabouts) are daft cheap, you get oodles of room and electric nicities, the TD engines aren't bad but the petrols are better at that age apparently. Oh and they're rear wheel drive too.

Omegas are OK, but I would probably recommend a low-spec one. Dunno if you could find an estate with the 8-valve 2.0, it would be slow but bullet-proof. V6s are nice but have a few weaknesses (cambelt and tensioners must be changed every 40k, breathers block up which blows the cam cover gaskets, etc).
I've got a 3.0 Elite manual on an M-plate - I got it cheap (£300 with 11 months' MOT) but have spent at least the same again sorting out the above niggles. It is nice to drive though, and with the manual box (and even with the a/c on) I get 30mpg. Bloody huge inside too, ideal for shifting stuff. But lots of electrickery to go wrong! And they rust in stupid places too (like under the rubber seals at the base of the side windows and the rear edge of the back doors).
There is an excellent forum for them though.

Ive been told that the cam covers on the V6 omegas can never be made oil tight. Traders HATE them!
