odd title, sorry.
i have a question, best put to you by example.
when i first wanted a skoda, i bought a rusty estelle 120 as it wass all that i could find. it had been laid up for years and was a total mess - rust with glass bits attached. i then went, bought one in england (motd) and proceeded to strip the rusty one to a shell and weigh it in.
i've never been sure whether or not to count it as a 'car' on my long list of curse word i've owned, i used to, but don't now.
next example, did the same to a rapid not so long ago. never had any intention of fixing it whatsoever (despite what Dave said to me lol). now is a shell in my field. does it count? again, i half count it. by shell, not even any insulation left on it!
bikes. i have 2 i can count for sure. but what about the 3 frames i have that i have 2 logbooks for, and are semi-there but used as spares for the other 2? they have no chance of coming back and live in the field as well...
so how much life does a vehicle need to retain, if any? can a shell be counted? must it be destined for OTR use again? any thoughts at all?

i don't think u can count a shell if ur counting how many cars u have, unless of course its only a shell for a short time and ur fitting bits too it, but in your case id say u have X amount of cars and a shell. and 2 bike with 3 frames. etc.

on a sort of side note - whats classed as a car by the DVLA? I had the silver escort parked on the road, with no engine, no interior, no front suspension, no numberplates, chassis numbers or vin tags I was wondering if I couldve argued the toss and said it wasnt actually a vehicle if they tried to do me for parking an untaxed car on the road ;D ;D but it didnt come to that

I think if youve got a V5 for it you can count it.

What are the implications if you do or don't count it?

I bought a spares imp, but didn't have anywhere to put it, so I spent a day stripping it in the street, reducing it to a bare shell ready for the scrapman. The moment it arrived, my eagle eyed next door neighbour rang the police to report that I had an untaxed car parked on the street (it had a 1979 disk in the window, lol). By the time the police arrived (at around 8 pm) the car was not only stripped but the shell cut into three pieces and piled up outside the gate. The (slightly confused) copper accepted that the pile of metal outside was no longer a vehicle and therefore did not require tax, but he did warn me that it was now illegally dumped waste, and I could be fined by the council instead. Next morning it went in the scrapman's pickup and off to the weighbridge! I looked up the legalities at the time, it seems that if " a reasonable person" would say that it has no prospect of becoming a vehicle again, it ceases to be one. BUT it becomes waste instead

To get a standard A40 this low, you'd have to dig a hole to put it in

Lets say a mint, showroom car was rolled, a high mileage tatty example purchased and stripped to a shell, then all running gear, suspension, interior, wheels and any surviving body panels from the rolled one are transferred to this shell, which car is it? Has the rolled one been re-shelled or has the tatty, worn out one been refurbished? Just idle curiosity thats all not planning on doing it or anything.

Technically you are looking at needing an SVA test so it could end up with either number or a new age related number. In actual fact most people would build it up to use whichever plate the wanted as its a difficult to prove which car the parts have come from.

If you have a vehicle that is probably not going to be "driven" again and it has a logbook, send the v5 back stating the vehicle is scrapped. This will stop any probs of sorn`ing it every year (like forgetting and getting fined). Then you can tell the other half (if they want to know or moan about the scrap yard in the garden) that it is now a garden ornament and they should be pleased that you are taking an interest in gardening!!!!

I've only ever considered functional and road legal vehicles, if I've been "counting" the number of vehicles I have owned. Parts cars etc don't count.
