Hi all
I have a hillman imp - which I only have time to work on at night, I thought it was a little louder than usual but now it's causing problems as balding, middle aged men are shouting like rocky out their bedroom windows because they go to bed at 10:30.
for his sake really as I will have to address the problem if he speaks to me again in the same manor !! Are imps just loud or has mine got an issue ? It's just standard - standard exhaust and pancake filter , but it is a little deafening to be honest - I noticed people kind of pi$$ed off during the day time when I run it never mind at night ! Any ideas to make it a little quieter ?

Thats unreasonable to work on a car or make noise later than 7 or so id say . Kids trying to sleep etc .

you have to live with your neighbours, I make noise working on my cars between 11am and 9pm as some of neighbours work night shifts, so they can get some sleep when they get home. depends on how much noise you're making though, and the type of noise. if you live on a busy road like I do,the noise I make blends into the background with the traffic. are you working in a garage or outside, if you're in a garage, that should reduce most of the noise, so I'd limit my noise output to a similar level to a washing machine or vacuum cleaner.

Don't under estimate the power of actually going to talk to people first! I live in a very quiet close mostly inhabited by retired people. When I was going to be doing a lot of grinding/cutting on the rally car, I knocked on my neighbours' doors just to apologise in advance and got universally positive responses. The old lady opposite was the funniest: "doesn't worry me Dear, I'm as deaf as a post"!! Equally, I don't take the mickey, so no grinding/bashing beyond about 8pm and don't start till after nine in the morning. Also, if I'm working inside the garage (I cant fit the car in ) I close the door. It just cuts down on noise a bit.

You haven't really said specifically what work/noise is getting this person annoyed but as a general rule I would say any noisy work:
Engine revving (loud exhaust or not) Engine running at all (If loud exhaust) Grinding Compressors Hammering Chiseling Jet-washing etc.
Should be done between reasonable hours. My opinion is after 9am (but maybe later if you have close neighbors working night-shift) and before 8pm (9pm at a push) is reasonable.
Working on cars is noisy and intrusive sound, it doesn't just blend into the background like nearby trains/road noise. I'm a night time sort of person so this is quite annoying to me as I would happily work till very late given the option. However I have also worked V.early shifts for work in the past and needed to go to bed much earlier and in the summer the sounds of people BBQing till late and general loud chatting, dogs etc was very annoying when trying to get to sleep. I know 'working on car' noise is much worse than that kind of noise too.
We also had a neighbor that liked to rev his car (with a moderately loud exhaust) early before work (7.30am) and when getting back late in an evening (10pm). It was really really annoying despite getting on with the lad and being a car guy myself (It even sounded quite sweet).
It's unfortunate that you only get time late on an evening/night but it's not fair to impose that on your neighbors, at least not on a regular basis.
However if you are getting aggro EVERY time you make car related noise in normal daytime hours, which I know some people get hassle over where they live, that is also unfair.

The OP is saying that the car itself is noisy. No it shouldn't be that loud.

10:30 i'd love you as a neighbour!!!! NOT!
As above talk to people etc have respect for kids etc .....
how about another silencer that plugs onto the exhaust pipe? used to run generators on call and we had an additional silencer on a bit of flexi that we used out of hours ...cut the noise in half or more

Yeah I see that in his post but OP also talks generally about working on the car. How much of working on a car is done with the engine running? Maybe tuning or diagnosing a running problem but I would say most work is engine off. That is where I'm slightly confused. Lots of people like a loud exhaust so its hard to say if that's right/wrong, though you may have limit running it late it is loud.

Personally I think making a lot of noise after 10.30pm is unreasonable if you have close neighbours. I stop at 8pm and my only neighbours are sheep lol. Saying that I can't do any loud work at all at the moment as its lambing season at it worries the ewes and then they get complications. As for is the car loud post a video and someone on here should be able to tell you if it sounds wrong.

As soon as it gets dark, I stop play, just for the consideration of people around me. But Imps in general? If its got a screamer pipe/race pipe/no pipe, then of course its gonna be loud!

I have no idea whether working late on my cars annoys the neighbours - they don't talk to me . . .
Seriously, in residential areas you have to be considerate - grinding, revving after dark (other than in the privacy of your bedroom . . .) is a no no.

Hi jordy, guess you've seen there's a theme emerging, you are just going to have to be considerate to your neighbours as the next step will be them going to the authorities, l would love to work all hours but l tend to work just noisy stuff on Saturdays when most people are using there petrol lawn mowers, if l do work during the evening l'll stop with noisy stuff around 8 at the latest.

Would agree with cars and any outside loud DIY (chopping flooring etc) I wouldn't start before 9 and would finish 7 or 8 latest. Some of my older cars have been noisy and with a tight single garage I'd make a point of pushing the car in and out to work on rather than make the street listen to it rev up to move 6 foot.

Yes the general consensus is working on a car after 7pm isn't considerate towards neighbours. I have a 5 year old and a 5 month old baby so appreciate noise after certain hours - I had been working on the car outside during the day then started it for 5 mins to drive it back into the garage , I have no problem with apologising for noise ( I really didn't think the noise was a problem as the garages are away from the houses ) my problem is with The way he spoke to me ! Some blokes think the are Rocky when they are in a car or behind a window - he wouldn't have spoke to me like that face to face I am not a problem neighbour lol I now don't start the car after 5pm - so it doesn't bother the neighbours, however I will be doing the timing parked outside that blokes house tomorrow afternoon , see if he " walks the walk " lol I have also ordered a bigger exhaust to try to reduce the noise - along with a few other things to get it quieter , thanks for the posts !

Yes Rob - I thought as the garages are around 100m away from the houses , the noise wasn't so bad - at least now I know !

I don't think that would help a lot here Maybe his Neighbour works nights, I work nights, and god damn, sleeping in daylight hours is nigh on intolerable in the spring/ summer
