sorry about earlier comment. rolleyes was meant to indicate meh-ness overtones, was not meant in any way politically. ie, 'as if' was sarcastic. not anything there to get upset about anyway, chill leigh.
i actually love ALL of ireland.
if you have a holiday booked here, firstly - the west atlnatic coast is lovely. although outside of the greater dublin/limerick areas the roads are seriously curse word. driven down main roads towards galway which are basically just a big wide roll of tar between villages, no lines, the down to barely paved narrow tracks between houses lol.
avoid cities. its not what ireland is about.
for cars - id recommend two places to start with - ulster folk and transport just outside belfast (north) and kilgarvan motor museum (very, very south). but if you tell us what you are into, we can point you in various directions around the isle.

No bothers surprisingskoda, I'm as chilled as a big block of ice at the bottom of the freezer in santa's house. Just hard to find the tone in writing sometimes or maybe i just read it wrong.... anyway, nobody offended and we're all good! And just to repeat for those intending to take a trip this way, YOU CAN FAIL YOUR DRIVING TEST AND CONTINUE TO DRIVE ON YOUR OWN IN THE REPUBLIC, BEWARE (I was also told that here they're not speed limits but speed suggestions i.e. you could do 30mph here but you could also do 90mph!) |

When I was last in Dublin a year ago I'm sure I read in a local paper that road fatalities are at a high over there. It was more to do with foreign workers going over, buying old bangers and crashing them rather than the locals having accidents.

When I was a teenager, still on my first Morris Minor and over in Dublin on hols I used to wander around a breakers (somewhere over Dundrum way I think) there was a breakers full of restorable fifties cars, big finned Fords and the like. Owner said the cars all drove and he'd sell them cheap but the insurance on something that old was so high no one would bother.
Don't know if that was blarney or true

Don't know if that was blarney or true Maddog, how long ago was that trip in your morris minor?I'll check out round Dundrum to see if that scrappy's still there and get back to you. There was the whole EU scrappage deal a few years back and that killed off so many "ditch-gapper" cars that were just strewn across rural Ireland when i was a kid so these may have gone the same way |

Yep, I'd say about 20 of them are too old to go to the pub, 20 too young, 32 either too poor or recovering alcoholics so that leaves about 50 punters and 3 places to go... nice 'n quiet. Won't be too many retro rides there though...

I've been watching this thread since Autofive's intitial comment...I know enough about Ireland to know that I don't know enough to make comments on a forum, but I can see other people are having trepidations too. One more political comment and it's locked. Let's stick to the ebay/postage subject, eh chaps? it wasnt my intention to start a political debate, nor did i want my question to sound jingoistic as for the postage issue - I Don't think you have a problem with overseas bidders paying the wrong postage if you fill out the overseas postage section on the auction page, and made sure your invoices could not be edited by the customer, check your 'selling' settings |
