Are they front and rear cable brakes in the picture of the central part of the chassis, or are they some kind of tension based chassis stiffener?

no body or engine/box, giving me the freedom to built it how i wish with the guilt. i do want to keep was much as possible, so aiming to the keep the brakes and rear axle as is, hence going for a modern 3 pot engine under 100bhp.
Currently i'm investigatng the vauxhall 1.0L x10xe-z10xe-z10xep engine family coupled to a ford rocket box.

The 1009cc engine was rated at 28bhp with a total car weight of 762kgs. The GM 3pot on throttle bodies I reckon is about 70bhp but I'm aiming for a light body so about 500-600kgs?

a Rocket box would be hoooooogely over-specceed for that engine! A type E or type 3 would be more than enough (and a whole lot cheaper) - type 9 if you want the extra gear?

So these other boxes mount to a "type 9" style bellhousing? i just though the 'rocket box' was the name of the ford standard 4 speed'er before the type 9 came along

The Rocket box is a type E with close ratio gears.
Don't know anything about the GM motor but you can get bellhousings for the type E, 3 & 9 for the CVH which shares bolt pattern with a wide range of 4 pot fords.

Why not go old school? Standard Triumph Spitfire/Herald 1200 or 1300 engine and gearbox could be the most appropriate or BMC A series from MG Midget. Both can be fitted with fuel injection and mapped ignition to improve reliability and running costs. If you can prove original year of manufacture it'll be tax and MOT free, unless you get pinged for upgrade/changes as a radically altered vehicle, then it could need SVA. www.gov.uk/vehicle-registration/radically-altered-vehicles

just checked and the Type 3 gearbox has a 7/8" 20 spline input shaft, whereas the Type E and Type 9 have a 1" 23 spline input shaft.
I have a spare type 3 (with CVH bellhousing if required)

Looking forward to this build. I've got two Standard Eight frames. My father is building another 8 tourer for hill climbing none the less. He's using a Mayflower engine. I'm think about making a special with a blown Mayflower motor out of one of my parts bin. Just imagine tearing up the hill with a 1000cc 50bhp blown side valve ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png)

Great project if the cable brakes on my Austin 7 are anything to go by, you're better off carrying an anchor and chain in the car and throwing it at a tree when you need to stop!
