Hi folks I'm relatively new to this forum but here goes... I'm New Zealand born and bred and have had a passion for BMWs of all types. All this started back in the early 80s when a friend of mine bought a series 1 E12 525 which he very kindly let me drive on a number of occasions; 12 BMWs later you can safely say that I'm hooked! Anyway, that first E12 left a lasting impression on me and I have been scouring the for sale ad's off and on for a number of years now. Well a couple of years back the one pictured below appeared on a local website needing a "dedicated" home. Long story short, it had belonged to an elderly gent who had passed away in the early 80s and had left it to his wife. She used it periodically up to about 1993 then stopped using it and just left it sitting in the garage. When she passed away the ownership passed to her grand-children. It wasn't their cup of tea so at the exchange of some cash it became an occupant of my garage. So, essentially I have a 1973/74 NZ new E12 520, 2 owners and only 113 000 km on the clock! The car really does look as if it has come out of a time capsule, original paint, albeit with some crazing and fading here and there, right down to the coconut fibre seats and VERY 80s carpet. This car is so basic, it didn't come with a radio or boot light or tachometer or even rear seat belts! Needless to say, having been off the road for a number of years all of the rubber has shrunken and cracked, fluids evaporated and brakes seized. The engine will fire but will not run continuously. The only rust I can find is a couple of bubbles in the return seam of one of the rear doors. If you look at the various photos none of the usual rust-disasters are looming at all. Some of you are probably wondering what my plans are; well if there are any purists reading this - please leave now. Don't panic! It's not getting a Lexus V8 transplant or anything like that! What is happening is that I'm "upgrading" it to be reminiscent of a 530 MLE/535 Motorsport/Alpina B7. I know this sounds like a tartan designed by a committee but the approach I have taken is - what if you had one of these cars in the 80s and went through the various catalogues, aftermarket suppliers etc. and bought bits to "hot" up your car to be reminiscent of the higher powered versions of the day? As you can see from one of the photos, I have amassed a number of performance bits, H&R springs, Bilstein shocks, Alpina front and rear spoilers (new) and other sundry appearance items. The donor for the suspension sub-frames and engine will be a 1980 635i (pictured) as well as sundry items like seat-belts and lights from other donors. The wheels it is shod with are sports options from an early E28 but I also have some 16x8 Ronals, similar to Alpina from a racing 3.0 Csi. The original wheels, which I still have are basic steel with the 2-piece chrome inserts. If the purusts are still reading, fear not as BMWs are a bit like LEGO in that there will be very little alteration of the bodywork but rather just componentry swaps overall. Everything that comes out of the car, seats, engine etc. will be wrapped and stored; I hate throwing things away! Anyhow, it's early days yet so please enjoy the photos and stay tuned! Oh, by the way, many thanks go to tonybmw who I've corresponded with in the embryonic days of this project and needless to say provided endless inspiration. Cheers Tony! Regards to all Ken. All original! Series of shots showing rust free boot and wheel wells. The interior is so desiccated that the sound-deadening material just pops off! My engine is running at 7 0'clock! Sunroof comes with a fashionable zip. Boot light - never been fitted with one. Ok - there is some "damage". "Donor" car All boot linings present and in excellent condition. Some of the "goodies" ready and waiting to go on/in the car.

Superb ! I'm looking forward to seeing this "morph " . The doner E12 based E24 looks to be in remarkable condition , pity you are on the other side of the world as I could have used many parts from it . Good luck and don't forget to keep us updated as it progresses.

Alpina rear spoiler was via Beast Power in the USA, a rather convoluted way of obtaining it but they were offering a discount at the time. All up cost still hurt though! Wheel-arch spats are off a wrecked E28. 535 rear spoiler came via our local buy and sell site. H & R springs via a German tuning shop on eBay. Bilstein shocks from another E24 "donor".

Good luck and don't forget to keep us updated as it progresses. Remarkable no! What bits were you after exactly? I have in total 2.5 donor cars so I'm swimming in series 1 E24 parts! Large bits would probably be pricey to post but if there are any smaller items you need I could do a shipping calculation for you. Are early E24 bits hard to come by over your side of the world? Anyway - longish story about this donor car for those of you who have remarked upon its condition... I bought this car as a donor soon after I got the E12. It is still a runner and the engine is really sweet. About 10 years ago it had had a full restoration and repaint, (it used to be green!), and admittedly on the surface looked very good. The wife said no! don't wreck it, my friends said no too. So - it got relegated to my top shed with the intention of restoring it in the near future. Pause here for a "top tip": If you are going to store cars in sheds that are located in rural/semi-rural locations, be sure to leave plenty of rat poison in containers in the shed! Jumping ahead a bit here but a year later when I went up to retrieve the car there was a whole community of rats in the engine bay. Fortunately they hadn't developed a taste for wiring. Back to the E24 donor saga. I then located another running 635 that came with most of the bits from a 633 of the same vintage. The 635 was ex UK, MASSES of rust and accident damage that had cracked the rear floorpan therefore I had no issues with breaking it down for bits; my sheds start to overfloweth. This task completed I then turned my attention to the original 635, after cleaning out 3 rubbish bags of rats nest I proceeded to strip out the interior for the rebuild. Well I should mention that this car was ex UK too and man oh man, the rust was back with a vengeance! Many of the issues had been caused by the drain tubes in the sunroof box rotting out, therefore the water drains into every nook and cranny inside the car. If buying any of the older BMWs with a sunroof, check the drains, if there is any indication that they are leaking think very hard about purchasing! There are large holes in the firewall, footwells, rear window wells, (the mechanisms were rotting away as well) and under the front windscreen. The skill required for restoration would have been at Tony's, (tonybmw) level which I don't have. To sum up, too much time and money would have gone into this car so the choice to turn it into a donor became very easy. Needless to say, photos can be very deceptive! I'm always on the lookout for older BMWs so one day another E24 will grace the yard. Oh - by the way, what is in the top shed now you may ask? My XJS V12 which is undergoing a long and painful manual-gearbox conversion process; but that's another story - must finish the E12 first!

The zip seems to be to gain access to the roof motor but behind it is a lot of foam packing so I'll leave it be for now until later in the refurb'. It's certainly not like the E24 and E30 arrangement.

what e24 parts fit the e12? might be easier to find parts knowing the compatibility. Essentially the first series E24 (up to early 1982) used the E12 floor pan, suspension and the M30 power plant. Apart from that there aren't too many bits that will cross over. Unique to both of them is the early "side-loader" differential.

Nze12, That is very good-looking early E12 "backloader". Are You palaning to keep orginal colour or do You change it? Some how I like it.

Yes - The spoiler is well made and I have no doubt that it's the real deal. As far as I'm aware, Alpina make the front and rear spoilers in batches based on demand. Having said that, it's not unusual for sub-components like that to be farmed out to sub-contractors. As for the colour, yes I am planning to keep it original albeit with a good cut and polish and a repaint of the bonnet. The brightwork will need re-chroming too.

so if I wanted to do a 6 cylinder conversion I could use a early e24 subframe? Ok - I must answer with caution here as I have not physically swapped over the components yet. However: It is well documented that the first series E24 grew from the E12 suspension and floorpan. I have corresponded with a number of people that have swapped bits from one to the other. My preliminary measurements verify all of the above. Just as a side note, I have read an article that stated that an E12 car was used as the development platform for the M88 engine - now there's a conversion!!! Using sites like realoem etc. will show matching of the suspension components but those sites don't necessarily show enough information to be absolutely conclusive. I am under no illusions that this project will not be like assembling a Mechano kit; for instance, the radiator and mounting is completely different to the earlier 4 cylinder cars. All of the ancillaries like power steering, oil coolers, pipes hoses brackets etc. etc. will certainly need to be adapted in the engine bay. The 635 currently is auto, I have a manual gearbox for it, BUT! the later Getrags don't have a manual speedo output so that has to be catered for. Note I haven't mentioned the wiring! At this stage I'm leaning towards transferring the whole loom from the 635. So in summary, there are still a number of fine-detail unknowns to come but in the short-term I'm compiling a "todo" list which I'll publish at a later date. Sorry about the long-winded reply but I don't want to deceive anyone that this an overnight project.

Sorry for the thread revival but has there been anymore work done? Lovely mint donor car and I approve of all the mods you've got planned! I too have conversed with Tony briefly, unfortunately E12s are scarce in the UK but I hope to get one in honour of my dad - he gave me the bug
