Oooooo chrome hat stands!? I look forward to the video of that set of lights! Thoroughly entertaining journey I'll have to make a little detour next time I'm out. I don't wish to send George's thread off on a brief digression... But as I "virtually" left a durian wrapped in leaves in his P38 last week I guess I'm in the dog house anyway. At least the smell's virtually gone now! Yup, I'm sure that's George's bar. From what I can see the nice Mr Yousef and his colleague went to a karaoke place somewhere up the road so they had some connection with the area. That's probably why the TV folks grabbed some footage of Cafe Adriatico. And probably because after filming they could pop in for a nice San Mig. And as we all know, George has since made the place truly famous worldwide. James PS, George, I take it this is your favorite watering hole and I'm not talking rubbish again? Right on the money James! That is indeed the very self-same and internationally renowned, Cafe Adriatico! Terrorists wandering the streets eh? Wouldn't surprise me. Ermita and Malate are very much the soft underbelly, as Frankenhealey would describe it. In fact we get some even more undesirables around. The other day I pulled up to find Isko Moreno was sitting at my table surrounded by his acolytes. 'And who is he?' you rightly ask. Well, he's the current vice-mayor of Manila and is running for election to Senate this time around, providing nobody shoots him first of course, and you don't get more undesirable than a politician! At least your man would have had a wide choice. We must have a couple of hundred karaoke bars dotted around here, if not more. Prior to that, they were just normal girlie bars but the last mayor, Lim, had a bit of a clean up (guessing the brown envelope was too small) so they went all "respectable" as apparently men being approached by a fully clothed young lady with a view to a spot of boom-boom is morally bad, but watching her dance naked in your 'VIP' room first, before you take her back to your hotel, is okay.

Not really sure how I've missed this thread! Just spent the last few evenings reading and catching up, life really does sound more exciting over the other side of the world...
As a Tamper fitter myself, I am particularly interested in the rail side of things. I know you mentioned earier that the current rails have never seen any sort of real maintenance work, so what are your plans with the freight lines once they're in? I'd love to hear about the introduction of tampers in the Philippines, especially the part where one disappears and gets turned into rice...
As ever, keep up the correspondence, it certainly makes for fascinating evening reading!

My old apartment in Makati was a real pig and every move was a shunt coupled with as near as dammit 45 degree ramp. As ever, keep up the correspondence, it certainly makes for fascinating evening reading! There'd be no work for a tamper fitter here, the term smacks of maintenance! I did see one here once. You could just about make it out through the undergrowth! That was on one of the MRT lines though. The same line that had a wheel lathe installed back in the eighties but no-one bothered to actually put any tracks to it. There it sits in its own little house, in splendid isolation and never been used! I hear there's a dead grinder out there somewhere as well. The current (i.e. this week!) plan is that we'll end up with a dedicated third track for freight, brand new and possibly standard gauge. So we'd wind up with single track and passing loops. That would take around two years to complete which would fit in well with locomotive lead times. Anyway, I'm glad you are enjoying the thread, I'm not sure it's more exciting than anywhere else but it is very, very different! Oh, and in other news, we've found a 5kg dog! At around 5 am this morning, Madam walks in with a miniature Shih Tzu under her arm. Apparently someone just gave it to her last night! Getting like bloody Battersea around here!

Forgot to mention, I got pulled again yesterday. 100% my fault. I had to go over to Binondo yesterday morning and purposely waited until the 10am window started because of the number coding. This allows banned vehicles to travel between 10am and 3pm in certain areas. Later that afternoon, Madam asked me if I'd get some wine so, at 3.15pm, I completely forgot and was pulled around 100 yards from the apartment! The guy gave me a bit of a lecture and I was waiting to shell out some Peso when he asked me for my licence. He was slightly unimpressed when I couldn't produce a Philippine one and started making vehicle impounding noises. Hmmm. Anyway, I managed to talk my way out of it without a ticket, on the spot fine and still with my '38! However, his parting words were, "Next time", so tomorrow I'm off to the jolly old LTO office to sort out a local licence. I may be some time!

So out of curiosity, what happens in an emergency if you need to get somewhere outside your allowed hours? Or do you have Madam's car on alternative day cycles?

And while we're at it, can I interest you in a Filipina bride? Twenty three years old and only five or six previous owners with a mere eight children under ten? Billy bargain! Oooh, that one's powered by Mercedes AND Ferrari! The padded roof is probably necessary, then. I imagine potholes at those sorts of speeds, a standing passenger might need more than just a grab handle!
Also, those bonnet mirrors are great!

Yes, I noticed it was a Mercedes but missed the Ferrari connection but then I'm still trying to work I out what a tamper lifter is and this time Mr Google is not my friend with arcane railway terms

I am the big noisy fitter that goes out and fixes / maintains the big noisy curse word machines. Here's one of our newer ones...

I am the big noisy fitter that goes out and fixes / maintains the big noisy curse word machines. Here's one of our newer ones... Close, but here's story from an operator's perspective... Tampers are the big noisy machines that go about during the night ripping up any cables and track bonds they can find and setting all your signals to danger. If you're really lucky, it'll clamp itself to the track and then fail, ideally at the depot entrance and usually just before you are about to launch the morning peak service. He's the guy you call to, "Get that heap of f'in 5hite off my tracks!" And a total fail on the licence front. Got to the LTO this morning and head into the office for the medical. "Student application?" says the lady. "No, conversion of foreign licence." "Ah, not do that here." So that was kinda the end of that. Going to get Madam's driver to take me over to the Manila Licencing Centre in downtown Santa Cruz in the morning.

It was the chrome & the pink plastic seating combined with the white & pink bubble roof lining. What tipped it was the "Glory to God" mud flap on the rear. I wouldn't have deliberated so long if it had had the full width tinted sun visor with " Jesus sits at my right hand " . Can't really see how I'd get the bride past the missus ? Have to work on that one.
