Is the jab in short supply over your way? Glad to know the spiced rum is working out OK! I reckon that the major percentage has come from overseas donations although I believe the government bought half a dozen themselves, "To see what they tasted like"! This means things are a bit hit and miss, as you'd expect! Rum continues to fester and now has a slight Mango smell. Forgot to mention before and this is for grizz a SA guy who lives here found his work disappearing with COVID, so he started making sausage to get some money in. web.facebook.com/thebushveldkitchen/The other day I ordered some ordinary pork (same as British), some Kameelhout and Sosatie. It was all delivered in an hour and a half. The pork managed a whole day before they were gone, the Kameelhout was Saturday and Sunday lunch whilst the Sosatie is cooking as I write. My first time with this stuff, but not my last!

Have you tasted it yet? You'd have quicker results with pineapple, Plantation Pineapple Stiggins Fancy is probably the best example of what you can achieve. Although I doubt you'd find that over there!
Tbh, mango works best with an Agricole rum, but I doubt you'll find that either!
Also, you need to appreciate Agricole rum, and that's something we've spent a fair bit of time training our friends in to being able to enjoy.
Your mangoes aren't as sweet and flavourful as ours, so the spiced rum is probably battling for flavour dominance.
But.. you have free mangoes. And you've probably not got that many options for rum, so work with what you've got!

Its a hardwood used to BBQ and will still be glowing the next morning. I wonder what he does with it. Really glad you like it. Also try the regular beef or cheese griller beef if he has. Last thing ypu can ask him for…….. Monkey Gland sauce or possibly sausage.

We've another tree just coming into fruit, but nobody's identified it for me yet. However, Madam assures me it's, "Very sweet," so that may get a go with white rum or possibly gin. Sosatie is a special thing. Not the way it looks but how it tastes. Really glad you like it. Also try the regular beef or cheese griller beef if he has. Last thing ypu can ask him for…….. Monkey Gland sauce or possibly sausage. Had the Sosatie last night. Very nice. The flavours reminded me of eating in Penang! Given the success so far, I'll be having a look at his other offerings. May just skip the monkey glands though!

May just skip the monkey glands though! Hmmmmmm. You unadventurous foreigner, you. Monkey gland sauce is a restaurant item in South Africa. Despite the name, the sauce does not involve monkeys in any way.[1] The tangy sauce is prepared in several manners, and may include a blend of fruit[2] and spices.[2] It is typically served with meats,[3] such as steak,[4] hamburgers, pork ribs or chicken. Several popular South African fast food chains serve a monkey gland burger. The sauce is made up of chopped onion, garlic and ginger, with a combination of chutney, soy sauce, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, ketchup, and wine. When the sauce was developed, there was much speculation in the popular medical press regarding the use of monkey glands as a means of keeping young due to the pseudoscience of Russian quack doctor Serge Voronoff. One story dates the invention of the sauce to a disgruntled chef at the 1936 Rand Easter Show: The patrons at the show were unused to fine dining and very used to tomato sauce, Mrs. Ball's chutney, and Worcestershire sauce. At the end of the show, the chef was asked to create a signature dish to commemorate his visit. In disgust at what had been done to his fine dishes, he said: "I will make something for those monkeys" (who had been his patrons). He made a tangy sauce with some of the ingredients added by the monkeys and a few of his own. Since that time, Monkey gland sauce has been a firm favorite of South African diners, particularly on steaks.

The story I read about the cow lottery mentioned the Dengue fever vaccine debacle - just what you need.
I had considered that the newly won cow may end up in your oven based on your previous food related adventures - could they not be persuaded to forgo killing it for the free supply of dairy products?
In other gourmet Filipino news, it seems there is a branch of Jollibee quite close to me - I have yet to add it to my list.

BEER. In other gourmet Filipino news, it seems there is a branch of Jollibee quite close to me - I have yet to add it to my list. FTFY. Sadly, or perhaps not, apart from milk, I am the only real consumer of dairy products in the form of cheese and butter. So no, I don't see how a deal could be struck! Now beer (or a more girlie alcohol concoction) could work. If Jollibee are faithful to their home country, pretty much everything they do (including spagbol) is sweet. Their Big Champ is about the safest bet. Anyway, it's a Santol tree we've got which, unsurprisingly, produces Santol fruit, also known as Cotton fruit apparently, due to it's consistency. They've not started dropping yet, so we don't know if we have a sweet or sour variety. Once we do, I can start experimenting! specialtyproduce.com/produce/Santol_Fruit_11159.php

Huh. Interesting, and somewhat unappealing looking fruit.
I guess you could tell how sweet they are by how many bats eat them. They won't eat the sour ones!

However we'll give it a try if they're sweet. ETA, one fell off so I dug around inside. Most peculiar looking thing but although not fully ripe, definitely not bitter. Got potential. By the way, the mango rum turned out a treat. Could be worse….. could be durian 🤢 Nick There's a durian tree a couple of streets down from us. It's got five fruit hanging from it and they're bloody huge. Fortunately, the tree is low down, you'd not want one of them landing on you! Strangely, nobody is pinching them.

Hello Manila fans! Sooo, we have good news and bad news. Choose yourself which is which. Where to start? Good stuff, or bad first? Let's have the bad. Tania has walked out on us just a couple of days after her 18th. Given the fact that she was winding her mother up a treat and smiling whilst she did it, and had someone pick her up when I was asleep, I can't help but feel there was a pre-plan plan. We believe she's with an ex-boyfriend who she claimed to hate, but who kept popping up whenever she went to her friend's house. Boyfriend is a whole different story. One day... Nowt to be done, so let's see what happens when her money runs out! Still, if it saves me the cost of driving lessons, car (shame, I'd got my eye on an MX5) and college, it's not all bad. I may even get a holiday this year?! And taking about cost. Seems Madam and Jey-Ann (remember her - the other Bottle Opener?) have had a making up session the same day as the above, before we knew what was going on, and we had a little reunion at home. And that's fine but she (Jey-Ann, not Madam) was very, very pregnant. Like 8 months 29 days pregnant. In fact so pregnant, she downloaded baby v.1 the following day. Can't help but feel (I say feel, because nobody's actually come out and said anything!) that I'm going to have further involvement in this, which will nicely wipe out any savings Tania leaving may have brought! She better call it George! So there we go, one out, one in, or should that be two! Jey-Ann had stitches (too much information) but wants to come and stay for a while as soon as she feels okay. As far as I'm concerned, I ain't doing nappies, been there, seen it, done it. Not looking to repeat the exercise! Messaged Tania to say that now she's 18, she's free to do what she wants. Just make sure it's the right choice. I'm still here if she's stuck, but her Mama could be a whole different story, See, it IS more fun in the Philippines!

Wow, that's a whole twist to the tale. I bet no-one saw that coming?
Sad news about Tania as she seemed to have her head on straight. But, we've all been teenagers and made what we thought were great decisions whilst our elders looked on going "this won't end well!". Would we listen? - No way!
I have to say that the cynical side of me would be thinking that someone had a word in Jay-Ann's ear along the lines of "that white fella's rich, and babies aren't cheap, you should pretend to get back together with your mum to make sure he picks up the tab" but maybe that's coz I'm a cynical old bar-steward.
Hope it all works out ok George.

Thats a bit curse word, George. Hope life sorts itself out for you soon enough.
I'd also be concerned about nappies. And general baby..ness. I'm glad SWMBO is of the anti-baby variety!
Oh well, lucky you've got some tasty rum to comfort you!
