Made me smile. Yes, certainly see that all the time. On Monday I was in a hospital to see someone who had asked me to deliver some patient literature or are they coffee cup coasters? Anyway, at one point I sat down in the passage on some strategically placed chair/benches to get some admin done, these passages are really long, and the oncology, and other clinics are situated at the far end of the building away from carparks and entrances. So some people do need to sit and recover halfway to their outpatient appointment Someone had dropped a whole container of rice and beans just about there too, I saw the scattered pile, fortunately mostly against the wall, but still covering about 700mm x 450mm of the floor. In the half hour I sat there trying to do admin, but transfixed by the amount of people, mostly, young, staff and by implication clever-ish walk at the pile repeatedly while on their phones, not noticing it....... I kept shouting a warning and most looked at me in surprise, then down at their feet in amazement. I so wanted to keep quiet and see some slip and slide action...... Idiots. Eventually a cleaner came past and looked at it, and carried on pushing her clean up trolley down the passage, at which point I commented to her, why not clean it up before someone breaks ahead or hip. Her reply “I suppose I can” You should have got the phone video's a fall and sold it to one of those "humorous video" shows...... Its the modern way Grizz

A couple of extracts from the "real" Letter from Manila... You can tell a new school year is starting, can’t you?
A long, long time ago, back in 2017 if I recall, you may remember an article which looked at a proposal by Malate Catholic School to shorten the educational week to four days, the kids to teach themselves at home, using i-pads, on the fifth, leaving the staff free to shag off down the Rat and Jeepney for a few cold ones. Like so many things proposed by MCS, it didn’t happen.
However, Philippine Christian University is made of stronger stuff. Not for them any hand-wringing, shilly shallying, not for them either, despite being affiliated with the Protestant church, the associated work ethic.
No, my Little Darling’s school week is Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Class(less) act!
Actually, as I pen this, Tania’s just sent me an SMS with a brief review of the school.
She went there this morning to pick up her uniform, as apparently they found something that would fit her in a, My Little Pony School Dress Up kit. I quote:-
“I’m here now at PCU. So many toilets here. Big ones. Many mosquitoes too.”
So there you go, a three day week, lots of large loos and every chance she’ll have dengue by lunchtime. Then, following the first day of actual education... Oh, how I laughed!
My Little Bottle Opener came home with some news from her first day of school. Yup, they’ve shillied, they’ve shallied and, following protests from parents, they are now back to educating our little darlings five days a week.
So that plan stood the test of time then! Seriously though, it's no wonder the country is as disorganised as it is. It just seems to be a natural form of existence!

Sobering watch, that. I'm gonna show that to the next commuter who taps their watch at me over a two minute delay Get a sense of perspective up 'em

Not sure if this has been shared before but gives a small insight into rail travel from an entrepreneurial point of view in Manilla. I think someone posted that on here already, but good to see again. I put some pics up a while back (3-4 years!) from a loco cab ride showing the trolleys. They are literally everywhere, and the PNR drivers take no prisoners. The bridge is over the Mighty Pasig River. And it needs rebuilding. Sobering watch, that. I'm gonna show that to the next commuter who taps their watch at me over a two minute delay Get a sense of perspective up 'em Here, they'd have to tap their calendar for delays. It is indeed very sobering. But people trying to earn money like this is everywhere. Living here certainly changes some perspectives.

So called "first world" inhabitants take so much for granted, and have no idea what it means to actually work for their continued existence with little to no provisions - just two hands and two feet and whatever you can fabricate or salvage from the streets or jungle.

I know we joke about life on the edge, but that's a pretty true statement for some, and pretty ragged it is too. Anyway, let me introduce Jenny She's still a delicate little flower with only 70kph winds at the moment, but as you can see, her predicted path is pretty close, so if she does pick up speed, we'll probably be knowing all about it. Checking out the walang pasok situation at around four this morning, pretty much every city in Metro Manila, except Manila itself, had already declared. Manila decided just after six, a time at which most students would either be already on their way, or for many, already at school. Now all they have to do is get home again! Good to see that Manila under her new mayor, is as forward thinking as ever. Update. Jenny's nowt if not ambitious, in just a short time, she's been promoted from Tropical Depression to Tropical Storm. She's still got a ways to go yet though, she needs to go through Severe Tropical Storm and Typhoon before the ultimate accolade of Super Typhoon. Let's see how she gets on!

Well, I for one, am glad to hear of someone rising from their depression and achieving greater things. Hold on to your hat! Nah, she went all Filipina on us. Having attained promotion, she immediately went out for a meal to celebrate and then promptly fell asleep. This led to immediate demotion again and she's passed over with hardly a murmur. I love my new NipponAlert warnings. 1) Monday, ahhhgh, we're all going to die! 2) Yesterday morning, yawn, what's the fuss about 3) 20 minutes after the above, ahhhgh, we're all going to die! 5) An hour later, Dengue alert, avoid mosquito bites. Don't need to if they've all been blown halfway to China, as per your last. 4) Today, nothing. Make your mind up! I was going to unsubscribe from the mails, but I think I'll keep them now, they're cute. My little girl wasn't happy. She and a mate had planned an entire day around manicure/pedicure, only to find the anticipated walang pasok had gone walkabout, and she had to go to school instead.

No walang pasok? That's the saddest story I've heard in the last 5 minutes. Get back to school, study hard, no time for boys, get pilot's licence, become senior captain on Philippine Airlines to keep Madam and George in their declining years. Now if only my kids would heed this advice. They didn't see that the 'Best Exotic Marigold Hotel' was a wrinkly romcom/travelogue but an instruction manual of how to get rid of me cheaply far, far away. In fact too far to be visited easily

If you're lucky, the Best Exotic Marigold Hotel will be on Station 2, Boracay. I know who'll be having the last laugh then! Funnily enough, she announced the other day that, "...this year I'm going to be a Honour Student, then you can buy me a nice present." This means no wagging off, and getting over 90% in all subjects all year. I told her if she did, I'd buy her a car. This went down well. What I didn't tell her is that I'd have bought one anyway.

Serious question. No, really. Some of the more astute amongst you may have noticed that I'm less than enamoured with my current project, so... I'm being dangled 3 years work in Israel, Jerusalem to be precise, on a massive extension to their LRT. Very interesting it is too. An old mate is Project Director, so it's a fairly certain shoe-in. There's also the possibility of another project here. But that's in the air, whereas Jerusalem is a real live project, up and running. So, I need to get off this job. Here would be preferable, but nothing concrete yet. Jerusalem would mean taking the fambly. They are happy to give it a go. Anyone out there with experience of living/working in Israel? I've never even visited, let alone worked there. I've been given likely salary (after tax)/housing allowance/cost of living, by another colleague, but that's only one aspect. No tip to big or small. I thankyew.

I did visit Isreal once quite a while back all I really remember is that it was quite difficult to get in and even harder to get out! Oh and I was also visiting Dubai on a regular basis so I ended up with 2 passports and you couldn't phone Dubai from Isreal. My sister stayed on a kibbutz even longer ago and went skiing in the Golan Heights... All of which is of no real use to you

It will be a culture change. I've worked with Israeli companies for decades. Very nice but very focused people. It will be a big culture change.
