For some reason the picture with the arrow gives a sense of scale to things.
Ooh 'eck.
Keep your heads down and we'll see you on the other side.
Good luck! James

Not bloody Walang My Office though. Just goes to show how wrong you can be... Had an email from our office administrator early this morning with a welcome attachment. That nice Governor of Bulacan – the province just north of Manila and where our project office is situated – has circulated a memo closing all schools, colleges, public and private offices, so that people have the opportunity to prepare for the forthcoming blow. This means that the Client, a government body, now has to pay our fees whether we’re there or not. So we’re doing an early dart at 12 and, more to the point, getting paid for it. I share the car with a Japanese colleague who, contrary to popular national stereotypical myth, has all the work ethic of a 1970’s British Leyland shop steward (actually, he’s chief project manager for civil works, so no duck egg, but his ability to delegate every aspect of his job, except the money, is breath-taking). Anyway, I showed him the mail on my phone when we picked him up, guessing, correctly, that he wouldn’t have checked his work mails yet and asked if he was up for a midday flirt. “Ah, I too busy” was his reply, and before I could retort that he could get stuffed as he’d done approximately zip for the last six months, he grinned and continued with, “You make sure to wake me up.” Good man! So, preparations? Well, I bought some wine yesterday and I’ve left a note for the maid along with some money asking her to stock the beer fridge, purchase another litre of brandy and oh, don’t forget the fags. I’m about as ready as I’ll ever be. Dogs are okay, we’ve plenty of food for them and they’ll sleep through most of it anyway. Madam and Tania? There’re preparing to go to a wedding. “We not be long, darling, we eat free food then come home again”! I really do feel that some people aren’t taking this as seriously as perhaps they should.

Love it.
Good luck George. My wife was looking at the news last night and mentioned that the weather in your part of the world was about to turn to absolute cr@p.

“We not be long, darling, we eat free food then come home again”! Love it. Good luck George. My wife was looking at the news last night and mentioned that the weather in your part of the world was about to turn to absolute cr@p. She's returned home having "souvenir-ed" a pair of large boiled crabs. Saves shopping tomorrow. Hope all goes well with you this weekend .... still, beer in fridge, so you should survive! So far, so good... Provided the power stays on...... if not the beer will get warm...... Nick Hence the wine and brandy back-up. Funny at the moment. Keeps having a little drizzle, humidity off the scale, but zero wind. Nothing at all, not a single kph. strange when you think there's a few hundred of them not too far away. Here's tonight's pic... It seems to be heading NW so that'll be the north of Luzon that gets the battering if it stays on course. Mind, it is 900km across so plenty of scope.

Morning all... Well, it's kinda overhead, with the north of the island bearing the brunt at the moment. I was watching the news last night and it was showing the evacuations taking place. They really do have it down to a fine art now. Must save a lot of lives. Well done Philippines! Credit where it's due. Shame the guys that came up with the system don't run rail projects! It was a bit wild last night but at the moment we seem to have settled into a 20 minute cycle of calm, dry bits and then wet and windy. Just having the latter as I write and although I have my moat back outside, the newly cleared drains seem to be holding their own, and you can watch the waters subside noticeably in the calm bits. So no worries there, just yet. We did have a guy in a small Hyundai Something take the plunge as I was watching off the balcony. He got to the deepest point (not deep enough to worry) and obviously decided that to check the depth, he'd open his door. Oops! Alcohol and tobacco stocks are holding up well, so that's another thing we don't have to think about and, as predicted, the dogs are sleeping through it. Probably a good idea. So far, so good.

Nice and sunny here this morning... China's turn now. So far I've read of six dead and four missing. Sad, but pretty low when you consider things and again, a tribute to the organisations and people who oversee the evacuations. Had to laugh yesterday, obviously the news channel was continuously broadcasting updates and they had their poor reporters all rugged up standing in the wind and rain with their microphones. Now, we know it's a bit blowy, but do we really need to see some poor little Filipina nearly lifted off her feet before being grabbed by an associate, before we believe it? Anyway, with that one gone, we can return to what passes for normality here, knowing that there's only a couple of months left of the rainy season. After that, all you hear is, "It very hot today". I tell them that if they wake up and find snow, that's the time to worry. Until then...
