There actually isn't one. Google Beervana. I'm going to try and make it next year. Providing all of this covid stuff is over. Although with close to half the beers on offer at over 10%, I'll probably be pretty sanitised. Just Googled, did a conversion from NZ Dollars to Peso, and have gone mentally teetotal!

Hi George - yep, decamped to the UK when they allowed 3 BA flights to depart end March. My concern was that, should it all go a bit "wild-west" martial law would be imposed; having experienced same during the coup i chose to bail. I believe there are approx 900 non-nationals who will be allowed to leave within the next 2-4 weeks, from which i infer that some international flights will be back on, even if only in the region.
TnT now in Phase 3 of unlocking. another 3 to go with borders reopening at end of Phase 6, approx 6 weeks away if all goes according to plan.
I'd be heading to the UK for a few weeks now anyhow (wet season, low season etc) so sitting it out. Virgin/BA making noises about restarting scheduled flights in November so that's a tentative return date although i will "visit" as soon as there is a flight in order to deal with business/apartment/truck/equipment etc.
luckily, i am able to get Stag ("A Man's Beer") over here. What i don't have is the short walk down to the beach/bar/jetty where i can drink it.

Hope all goes to plan Paul. Good luck. So, what's been happening? Well someone kindly bought me some highly expensive (think several thousand US$) train operation simulation software. Well, no, they bought it for themselves and got it loaded onto my laptop as the only person with operational experience on the project. Unfortunately, they didn't really want to buy the training that goes with it. It works like this. You buy the licence and get two days free training, a third comes at cost. There's no limit (within reason) to the amount of trainees, but only one chews up the same time. Obviously, with COVID, everyone's working from home and I have a good internet connection. The client wants to hold back free training. So, the people that were paying said, "How's about you do one day, on-line?" I pointed out that on-line was no substitute for face-to-face and I wasn't sure one day would see me competent on a pretty complex piece of software. Two would be better. "Okay, we'll get you one day" As you can see, the client listens. So I did my day. Guess what? Nowhere near enough. Now fortunately, the local supplier/trainer happens to be a, "best friend," of mine ever since I financed him a full pi55 up here one night, so I screwed two more half-days out of him, gratis. Still only half-trained and with some reluctant software, I attempted to build a model of 142.886 kms of line, to the level of detail about (not yet designed) signal locations and track circuit lengths, then run four separate, yet concurrent, services across it. A week last Friday it had the Mother of all Crashes so, pretty disgruntled, as it had eaten a weeks work, I fired it off back. Apparently, "It shouldn't do that," and it was sent to a mysterious entity called, "The Developer" for something computery. Got it back on the Saturday. "Everything fine now." Well, it was after another seven days of entering the stuff I did the week before. Last Sunday, It's working! Spent another week trying to get incompatible services sorted. So, tonight, Friday, the train plan I wanted to run, finally ran, and it works. This cheers me greatly as my Japanese colleagues, and I use the term pretty loosely, reckoned it couldn't be done without their own, highly specialised software (seems nobody can do lots of up front on Excel) about which they could not possibly describe, or tell us which railways used it, but which apparently only Japanese people can operate and even further limited to 2 people with the combination to the safe in which this rare gem is held. In a mountain. Interesting, but my Excel speed/time programme, which I've used on jobs all over the world, is within 1 minute of a several thousand dollar simulation. Anyway, basically May disappeared, but Victory is sweet! Having the first weekend off for a while. May be having a "Mystery Guest" tomorrow. Do hope so. Watch this space. Take care everyone!

LOL - good work on the "timetable". Never really used Excel other than in a basic "here's a row of things to be done, and links to the relevant web pages"
Mystery guest eh? Female family perhaps - has your chipping away at the missus borne fruit?

<snip> So, tonight, Friday, the train plan I wanted to run, finally ran, and it works. In a mountain. Interesting, but my Excel speed/time programme, which I've used on jobs all over the world, is within 1 minute of a several thousand dollar simulation. I love excel - I've built quite a few very complex spreadsheets for work and home it really is a versatile tool Years ago I was working in a company making cancer treatments and we produced for 6 different comtries and 4 different strengths We used to get annual forecasts for volume all countries marketing teams (all strengths) and placed blanket orders for all the code specific packaging (sourced from another company) based on those volumes Constantly running out of the right packaging and having to increase orders for some packaging made me frustrated so I built a model that I used to input what we had produced based on customer actual orders - in 6 mths I had all the data I needed to go back to marketing and they were very surprised to hear their forecast accuracy was less than 20%. I proposed a yearly forecast based on what the data said and we used that - over the next 6mths it was just over 80% accurate Turned out their idea of a forecast was to take the middle strength and put 80% of the volume against it and spread the 20% over the other strengths I think if I'd been doing that job as a base I'd have said how much of each strength did we sell last year but I'm not in marketing!!!!

Since when did Marketing bear any relationship to the real world? Anyway, look what I got for my birthday... Took a sledgehammer to the wedge in the end. It worked. A prize to Morris63. Made my day? Yeah, you could say that! The pair of them are sleeping off an Empi overload as I write.

Thanks flyingphilOf course, it's not even vaguely plain sailing, this is the Philippines after all. So, during the course of last weekend, Jey-Ann and Madam needed to have a serious sit down and hammer out their issues. However, in true Filipina style, they both danced around things and Jey-Ann went home on Monday afternoon with the situation still not satisfactorily resolved. I was pretty teed off and made it damn clear to both of them. This was the future of Jey-Ann, our future as a family, we were talking about, so get to it!. Of course, that now made me the villain of the piece which, in turn, meant that on Tuesday night, when Madam went to pick Tania up from a sleepover, they could both meet to have a moan about how unreasonable I am and, as a little spin off, have that serious sit down to hammer out their issues. Madam came home all smiles and lovey-dovey last night. My work here is done! Next steps? Still to come. See what I mean about the long game? Anyway, in celebration, I had a look at what Grab had to offer for supper and noticed a new Indian restaurant in their repertoire. Bloody good it was too, they even managed to get it reasonably spicy as well. Of course, eyes being much bigger than belly (what a horrible thought) I ordered much too much, so I can have it again tonight! Public holiday this Friday (can't remember why) so I'll be having a run out in the '38 to see how far we're allowed to go.

Because we're British; my friend Allan, curry aficionado extraordinaire, states that leftover curry is best served re-heated on toast the next morning. He sometimes does not eat the stuff ordered the night before so he can break his (curry) fast Mr. Creosote stylee

Well, putting a different slant on things, if by you becoming the villain of the piece means that they’re talking enough to blame you, it means that they’re still talking, so that counts as a win in my book Well done that man!

As someone once said, "Ask and ye shall receive," or something like that. So, this is for varelse and anyone else reading. Being the eagle eyed Antipodean that he is, he'd spotted the plural use of "Bottle Openers" in my Range Rover thread, when I was talking about a report back that the mall I needed to get some paint from, was a non-starter. This story is still in the making and there are things afoot of which I know nowt, but so far... Madam and Tania were planning an abortive shopping trip to the above mall on Thursday and gave Jay-Ann a call. Would she like to join them? Seems the answer was positive. Anyway, they trooped home that afternoon having bought 3/4 of sod all, due to the mall still being 99% shut. Jey-Ann stayed over, and again last night. Now, this is where it all gets a little hazy. Madam announced she was going round the corner yesterday evening for a birthday party and, as I'd had a killer week, elected for an early night. Seems she overnighted and this morning I had a string of SMS from her making cryptic references to plans they discussed last night, how she was going to talk to Jay-Ann's father and for me to stay silent on what was happening. "Loose lips sink ships," and all that. This is easy. I haven't got a bleedin' clue. There's a bit of a parallel universe thing going on, so I'm going to declare the 20th June, International Beer Drinking Day, and watch bemused as whatever is to be unfolded, erm, well, unfolds. More as it happens!
