Once again, I've been ticking along in the background slowly, but this weekend marked a milestone - the speedo is in! Carrying on from where I left off, here's the new speedo face blank: Then trimmed with new odometer cutouts As you can see, it's the outline of the square one, with the cutouts from the round one. I definitely didn't do that at work on christmas eve... Then apply new face decals and build up into the cluster: From the back with the removed one for comparison: I ran wires from the rear axle up through an existing grommet in the floor under the rear seat, along the tunnel and up through the centre console. One needed splitting and joining to the dash earth. I also ran a power wire from the fusebox, ignition switched so chose the heater fan. So, does it work?? YES In other news, I have acquired some Alfa 156 seats for a "good price". However, they need cleaning - here's a during shot These bolted straight onto the Volvo subframes once the studs were pressed out and only 2 holes need drilling - a result! Hoping to have these in before the Sussex pub meet next Wednesday, purely so I can wind up EmDee as it appears to be easier to fit Alfa seats to a Volvo than to an Alfa... MOT is due this week, MantaPhil is doing some more inner arch welding and might be fitting tyres for me More to follow...

These gauges look superb, nice work fella! Where did you get the decals for the numbers? Did you make them yourself?

They are R-sport themed ones which came from a chap called Dave Barton off of the USA who does a host of Volvo bits, even including meme face instrument decals

once again, a late update. Been doing loads of silly little jobs on this, mainly relating to maintenance required from using it every day. Fitted a catch can in the breather pipework as it was spraying oil mist/smoke everywhereWorked out my fuel pump is leaking oil Established my downpipe doesn't like my poly engine mounts very much: A story about faffing with wheels - by MLT aged 34 3/4.I swapped some 240 steels for some 140 series steel wheels to get banded, there's a pic a few posts back. Here's a pic of the wheels in primer - Hell yes! And painted, also the best pic of my Alfa seats, which are IN Here's a pics of it during the MOT with the new wheels! This was the peak of my enthusiasm for a while as the tyres/wheels started leaking air fairly profusely and the hubcaps didn't fit. The caps don't fit because the hub spigot diameter is 1/8" smaller on a 140 so you can fit the hubcap spider/bracket thingy on. *insert many swear words here* Some quick efforts to remedy the leaks didn't work, so I bought some different rolling stock while I can properly sort the leaky wheels out and come up with a way to mount the hubcaps. They will be back on cos they are SEXAY. The alloys I bought are kinda cool, but they look a bit lost after the banded steels... In other news, this will be happening: once I've cleaned up the one on the right. I have managed to find a RHD lamp so will have a workable set soon enough. I'm also collecting bits for a home brew R-sport kit: with the help of Blown_Imp for some technical details, but this is a way off. The engine needs to come out in the longer term for new rings, so planning to do the requisite jobs then. Other than that, it's been racking miles in daily use, including towing my moped to it's MOT, collecting 10' scaffold boards, tip runs and occasional blasts with my son, who seems to love it! Good job I still love the thing too (just)

Oooh, an update, and a good one too! Those banded steelies do look great even without hubcaps.

blimey, didn't realise it had been this long since I updated my thread... Where to begin? I was going to book it in for some bodywork, there's a hole at the bottom of the driver's A-pillar which lets water in to the cabin, the spare wheel wells at the back are grotty, there's a patch on the scuttle and there's various blebs all over. Plan was to do all that and locally paint in colour matched brown. Was going to be before RRG, but no time slots were available. This was also happening, I'm also collecting bits for a home brew R-sport kit: The engine needs to come out in the longer term for new rings, so planning to do the requisite jobs then. I'd found sources for carb parts, a turbo, a manifold and made a detailed plan... I even bought an intercooler in the tat auction! .... Then I found an engine donor for £ silly and all of the above went out the window! I'm now midway through stripping the leaky, low compression b21a for it's camshaft and auxiliary shaft. I've also started stripping the 87k mile (SMUGFACE ) B230FK to fit those bits, do the HG, cambelt, water pump, and loads of seals. I've got a boot full of parts and wiring, just need some time to crack on... The end result will be a standard engine with the little 13c turbo. However, no cat and short exhaust, the A-cam, chipped ECU and raised boost should see ~200hp. Can't wait! I need to fit a boost gauge and have found a suitable location, but wanted something to match my smart new cluster. Start with a VDO boost gauge: Take it apart: Take the face off and check out the new decal Put it all back together! I need to paint the white ring, but once again very pleased. Thanks again to Dave Barton for making it for me!

Hi mate Planning on 10-12psi, the little turbo starts getting a bit hot after that. I want to get it in and running, then there's several upgrade options like 850 T5 turbo and injectors, larger custom down pipe to go up to about 250hp

I managed to sell a lot of stuff off the donor 940, and quite a bit of the no longer needed 240 stuff. However, this meant that I spent a lot of time stripping cars instead of doing actual conversion work. The conversion is taking place at TAB (respec) which is close to my house, but I can't rock up willy-nilly so things are brewing gently when timings work out. I grabbed a few hours yesterday to remove more engine bits, this is the current state of 240 engine: No cam and aux shaft removed This is the donor engine in a similar state: And the hole for the aux shaft FYI, this is both aux shafts: I need the one on the left as the top teeth turn the side mount distributor, because the head mounted dizzy from the 940 won't clear the bulkhead. This is now fitted with new seals - one job ticked off! Next job is fit & shim the old cam to the new engine, plus a few other bits and bobs. Then, broadly speaking, the old engine needs pulling, gearboxes swapping and the lot refitting. I've also made a start on stripping down the wiring loom at home. Already removed a lot and plenty more to do!

In an effort to update this more regularly, here we go: I've been trying to visit TAB on a weekday eve to tick a few of the jobs off. I removed the donor cylinder head and brought that home to shim up the new cam. I promptly discovered that I needed thicker shims but only had thinner ones... A member of the 240 facebook group kindly sent me a big box of shims and some angled feeler gauges which were invaluable. Here's me sorting and measuring them in front of the TV The head now needs seals fitting and refitting to the engine. The old engine and box are out of the car and split, I brought the shifter home to rebush and fit my quickshift Here's a side by side of the shifters extra length below the pivot equals shorter throw above. You might also notice my shiny bronze shifter bushes to replace the worn out plastic ones. Should be TIGHT afterwards. Here's a close up: I'm visiting this weekend with the aim of trimming the bellhousing and fitting the head and new water pump. I've also sorted an oil cooler solution that does away with the enormous 940 oil/water elbow and been measuring and acquiring oil feed and drain parts to and from the turbo. Unfortunately no pictures, but hoping for real progress soon

Here's me sorting and measuring them in front of the TV This made me chuckle thinking of you and Freyja watching neighbours (is that even still on?) with you doing this, Lucas trying to "help" and her rolling her eyes at engine bits being on her carpet - Domestic bliss! Can't wait to have a ride in this when done. How's the boost gauge coming on?

Once again I've been slack on my updates... The head is fitted, along with new water pump (although the OE Volvo looked in fine health tbh). The blanking plug for the 940 distributor is now in, although I'm going to knock up a retainer as there have been a few instances of catastrophic oil loss if these fall out Exhaust manifold and turbo back on, including new braided oil feed line to avoid the oil cooler sandwich plate apologies for photo quality, I'm invariably there after dark weekend before last marked a major milestone, the engine and box are in! This was preceded by a number of important tasks: - acquire new front pulley to get TDC (the original had a mullered alignment key)
- fit flywheel in correct orientation (see above)
- fit clutch
- fit gearbag
- clean up bulkhead and apply some paint
- attempt and fail to flip the steering column
- fit new gearbox mount
- fit rebuilt shifter
This was a total swine with a normal engine crane, we had to reposition the chains twice to get enough reach. By some miracle, my front bumper survived unscathed. I arrived at TAB at 6.30 on a saturday eve to be greeted by a cup of tea, biscuits and an enthusiastic Elk. We didn't finish until 1am so take a bow Colonelk - you are hero Next jobs are: Bolt up prop refit front panels Fit rad/intercooler plumb them Wiring Run fuel line and fit uprated in-tank pump relocate battery slightly In other non engine related news, I've got to weld up the floor for the now expired MOT and I've sold my round headlight kit. To be replaced by something equally/more tasty...
