Been lurking around here for more than a year now, so I thought it was time for another Dutchie to post his project car! Its my first car, bought it in 2010 and drove and worked it since then. I won't post all the changes it has had in the last four years but make it a quick summary 'till today! Started life as a 1985 Volvo 360 with a 200k When I had just bought it First thing to change where the rims Had a fair bit of rust on both rear doors, rear arch.. (Turned out it had al lot more rust) Then came MOT, and both rear sills where completely rotten Bought new doors Then I bought I completely rotten 360 5-door (my parents didn't really liked that, I had not told them) Started dismanteling the car Then took the engine out Did some slalomming (Elandrun 2011) Put the empty shell on a really big trailer ... Not entirely legal, so brought it to the scrappies '7 in the morning Welded the front arch

Started poking holes in the front valance (is that the right word?) Fitted a modded front spoiler of a 240, took it of after a week, was grounding on every speedbump Painted a new front fender And fitted a rear spoiler of a GLT Fitted a double stabilizer bar Painted a rear door Then I bought some 940 parts Screwed up the paint on the new door, fixed that though Went on with testfitting the turbo thingies Bought some other goodies Drilled a hole in the spare engine that came out of the scrapper Went on with more welding Then engineswapping day arrived Getting rid of that old carburettor and swapping in the injection engine! Cleaned the engine bay a bit, then swapped the noisy torquetube for the one from the scrapper Noticed that the axlelink from the 85' had a darker color than the 88' axlelink, maybe different materials? The dark collered had 200.000km and no damage, the lighter collered one had 90.000km and had some damage The 940 intercooler doesn't fit without modifications Build an intank pump to fit inside the 'carburettor tank' (different than injection tank) Put the b200e engine in without the turbo, wasn't running good with the intank pump, so I changed the fueltank for an injection model tank! Then the car was fine!

I gave her some new collored bumpers Then modified the exhaust somewhat, the backbox had rotten away Then bought Vmaxx lowering springs, not doing that again though, way to low and to soft Welded a set of spare lower arms Made and fitted a crossbrace Made some 2" lowering blocks Helped a friend with a photochallenge, really liked these ones Then came winter 2012 Found some new front koni's for a Volvo 340, I have fitted new Koni load adjusters at the rear Fitted the welded and polybushed front arms Fitted the Koni's and Vmaxx lowering springs (going to change the springs soon for better ones) Result of lowering, the front is way to low, notice the backbox has changed for a fiat croma rear box put some bigger speakers in the front Finaly changed the other rotten door Then bought a b230fb engine With that, a LH 2.4 engineharness and computers Bought some secondhand 240 brake calipers to use for a big brake conversion Bought another engine to take some parts of, changing the b230fb from a headmount distributor to a blockmounted one Swapped it on the FB Time for another engineswap Ran into some problems with the clutch, was hitting the bellhousing Turned out the original clutch was a couple of milimeters higher than the clutch that came with the engine, so swapped those and everything was fine Another rust issue

Then bought some bmw bits.. To connect this box to the engine Then decided that instead of using toyota corrola e10 255mm vented disc brakes, I will be using Alfa 146 2.0 16v 284mm discs.. I have to use 1,5cm spacers and the longer subaru studs but thats no problem.. Should have enough stopping power for a future turbo mod I think:D That's it for the past four years of tinkering, will keep adding updates as I go from here now I couldn't upload all the pictures at once so I did in a couple of posts

Thanks! Did some work this weekend The original, old and worn down viscofan has changed for something a bit more modern. Bought a Ford Escort mk4 turbo fan, it's a pusherfan, more than enough space in the front. Bought a 340 thermoswitch m14x1.5 Couldn't find a m14x1.5 nut so went for a Honda cub rear swingfork nut Neighbours cat is always around Ordered new tires, 110 euro's shipped:D Continued on the batterybox Only have to grind al the welds down and give it a lick of paint

My uncle put the new tires on the rims, and today I've put them on the car.. drives much better now! I've also received a package today, containing 2" loweringsprings 200lbs, doorhinge pens, and doorhandle rubbers! Can't wait to mount the new springs, the ones I have on the car are way to low and to soft I also found some old photos on my phone I had bought a vacuumgauge, but still had a empty hole on the right on the dash, so I fitted the shiftindicator. In the past I had scored a turbo/oil pressure gaugeset from a Volvo 480.. So I butchered the gaugeset and fitted the oilpressure gauge in the dash, I've fitted a 480 oilpressure sensor on the block (has 1/8 npt thread so goes right in) A old photo of the 240 brakecalipers on the hub. Mounting them this ways allows Toyota Corolla e10 discs to be fitted (if my measurements are correct) My 'testdisc', this way I can try different sizes without spending a fortune on buying them first And a picture of the speedsensor (VSS) from a VW golf mk2, it's needed to fool the lh 2.4 ECU. Three wires: switched 12v, ground and the wire to the ECU And a picture of the car last summer

Taking the dust of this thread. The car is still going strong, but with the 2.3 liter it is quite thirsty. So that has to change! I have looked for ways to make the car less thirsty and started modding the car not for mph but for mpg. Found a lot of usefull tips ecomodder.com. With the old 2 liter carburetted engine I was doing 30 UK mpg. With the new 2.3 liter and injection I was able to get 35 UK mpg on the motorway. With the mods I have done + changing my driving style I'm able to reach 45 UK mpg. I wanted some newer, electric mirrors. So I swapped the old ones for BMW mirrors. They are more aerodynamic and look better (I think). The choke indicator on the dash was converted to tell when the electric fan is on. This was done to see if the planned grillblock didn't block to much of the grill. The grillblock was made from lexan. The opening that was left turned out to be to big, so I used some clear tape to seal that to. Only on holiday in France I took the clear tape of. I then made a undertray for the front of the car. With it on there is less wind hitting the bulkhead so it's less noisy aswell. After that, the rear had to be changed. So another aluminium sheet was bolted to the car. Having the drive on the rear wheels is nice for spirited driving, but not so easy to cover for aerodynamics. A big hole was still catching a lot of air under the car. That hole had to be covered, but the axle still has to be able to move up and down. The hole is now covered and the axle has enough room to move without hitting anything. Al the covering sheets are easy to remove by undoing four bolts. I also mounted tire deflectors in front of the front and rear wheels. Then it became even more serious. I knew that the most gains would be at the back of the car. So I did some tuft-testing to see if it really was that bad. Ofcourse is was. By using a template of the ideal aero shape I got an idea of what the rear of the car should look like. So after a lot of thinking I came up with this. The boot still has to be usable, and I did not wanted to drill holes or do anything inreversible to the car. It is attached with two bolts to the driprails by using an original roofcarrier. Last thing I did before I went on holiday was add full wheelcovers. All the mods I did on the car are removable. The add-on tail I only use for motorway driving. I hope to break 48 UK mpg one day.

That I REALY like!! Thats getting pretty serious. Ive been thinking of how to get some gains in mpg from my van, And your undertray idea has given me some ideas... Have you considered using slightly thinner tyres?

Have you considered using slightly thinner tyres? I have considered smaller tires, but the ones I have on the car are brand new, so that will have to wait. But I'm planning on smaller and taller tires.

Its one of the things thats stopped me fitting wider wheels and tyres on my t4. At the moment its getting an average of 42mpg! But that is driving like a nun. And it has a 1Z tdi conversion... But its still requiring a few bits to improve on that .

You must be nuts to try and modify a brick into something aerodynamic, but I like your style!!
