I had the opportunity yesterday to go and check out a garage I'd been meaning to look at for ages. Its on the North Circular at Neasden and I dare say any Londoner on here has probably driven past it on numerous occasions. But its an absolute timewarp! I'll let the pictures speak... Spotted Laurel has done a DVLA search on the Carlton wagon - The enquiry is complete The vehicle details for C645 EKN are: Date of Liability 01 07 1988 Date of First Registration 22 01 1986 Year of Manufacture 1986 Cylinder Capacity (cc) 1796CC CO2 Emissions Not Available Fuel Type Petrol Export Marker Not Applicable Vehicle Status Unlicensed Vehicle Colour WHITE Vehicle Type Approval null Amazing!

I'm still as in awe looking at those pic's now as I was this afternoon on autoshite. It defies logic as to how and why that place and its contents still exists in such a prominent place (and is therefore very good).
I'm not a Londoner or even a regular visitor - Baz and I drove past this place after we'd been to collect his R11 and were en-route to Seth's and I think it was the Carlton that caught my eye, even though it must've been 10pm. It's that spotter's instinct of noticing a dated building, then seeing a slightly-too-square shape with a bit of chrome.
It's great!

My guess is that the showroom has been set up as a kind of museum, as the cars on the front look to be the sort of stuff you'd see on many a used car lot.
Near me is a former Rover main dealer. The show room is full of BL classics (Mini Cooper, reshelled into a Clubman, Mk2 Jag, Allegro, Dolomite, Austin Metropolitan etc), none of which are for sale, and all the stock is outside on the forecourt.

I've driven past that place SO many times.
I've only ever really noticed the mk2 golf....had no idea some of the other stuff was in there.
Wowsers.
Very tempted to pop down in the morning and have a gander...

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

My guess is that the showroom has been set up as a kind of museum........ But why a Carlton 1800 estate, or a Regata, or a Panda etc etc?! Not obvious choices, though I'm pleased they're in there. Other DVLA checks showed the Panda has been captive there since 1996, and the SD1 (a V8 according to Seth and the DVLA) 1992. Looks as if there might be a Bluebird T72 too? Seth, is the black car on the left of the last piccy the 205 cabrio you mentioned?

probably the only reason it hasn't beed developed, is they cant find the owner, or its caught up in probate. Cant imagine it will stay like it for much longer

Seth, is the black car on the left of the last piccy the 205 cabrio you mentioned? No that was in another window and was red I think. That black car may have been something a bit more modern (ie 90's! )

I agree they are weird choices of cars, but they look too clean to have just been abandoned in there. I'm guessing the cars on the front are really for sale, and the fact there's an X plated car there suggests they are current. The dealers name appears on various listing sites, so I would guess they're still active.
Also, there are 8 years between the Carlton last being taxed, and the Panda, with the SD1 in-between, so that doesn't suggest they are abandoned stock. Maybe they are cars he was stuck with, and after so long decided to keep rather than dispose of in the normal way.

Is it actually open or did the owner leave the country in 1988 on the run from the police and its just been left? Either way thats amazing!

That place looks mad!
Maybe the owner is just a stubborn skinflint? That would explain a lot. He probably over-priced the Carlton/Panda when he first got them in and won't let them go at a loss! I can just imagine him not buying new signs too - 'the old ones aren't broken, and they'll only change the nuber again. First it's 01, then 081, then 0208...I've saved a ruddy fortune on signwriting already'.

There's a place like this not to far from me, but it actually shut down a good 15 years ago! Its in a right curse word area, but the cars inside have surved because of the expanse of metal grating that covers the building. I'll take some pics next time i drive by...
