1989 Ford Fiesta Urba. With the introduction of the all-new range, Ford were keen to emphasize on the new Fiesta's option to offer rear dorrs for the first time. They had an unusual way of going about it.. If it was just a joke, the joke was on them when BMW went on to profit from putting such a car into production..

If it was just a joke, the joke was on them when BMW went on to profit from putting such a car into production.. ...although they couldn't be arsed to re-engineer it so that that the tiny door was on the correct side for the UK market...! Oh, and here's the Proxima again. DSC_5067 by dbizzle_, on Flickr DSC_4030 by dbizzle_, on Flickr

Having owned a Z1, Ive always been a fan of unusual doors. The Renault Argos concept was one I particularly liked:

Oh, and there was also the Land Rover Range Stormer.
Basically a concept for the Range Rover Sport, but actually rather nice with some pretty awesome touches. I'd go as far as to sat 'I'd have one' if they had ever made it exactly like this concept (as if that would ever happen?)
If you just want to see the doors, skip to 44s

Apparently this was an official conversion for French policemen so they could signal drivers to stop. There's no way of closing them as well, so it really proves its daftness in the wind/rain/anything other than perfect weather.

And to stay on the French theme: There must be something in the water....

Only the French would fit a Gauloises door for the benefit of smoking Gendarmes, brilliant....

BMW mainly stole this from Mazda me thinks... Other contestants; Fiat Multipla; And the famous "barn door": And of course UPS delivery van doors 8which I always thought are amazing!):

I've never seen the rear door on E-type open before, and it never occurred to me that it wouldn't open like a regular hatch...

Nissan Prairie deserves a mention. Not as much for sliding rear doors as elimination of the 'B' pillar combined with lightweight early '80's construction. Similarly '61 Lincon Continental convertible Though at least that did not aim for lightweight! Curvature of side glass & lack of ctr pillar supposedly meant windows had to wind themselves down slightly to avoid collision of glass if opened/closed at the same time. Subtle I know, but the Toyota/Lexus Soarer Double pivot door hinges deserve a mention for over-engineering, moving the door outward as opened. Lotus Eleven; careful of the window! GT40

Or how about no doors. At all. Not even remotely.
