So been looking for a new project, something that needs bodywork as I want to learn the craft of metalwork and something that can benefit from a bit of engine work/engine swap. So when I saw two project 240z's on ebay, one rusty parts car and one more solidish bare shell, with no pictures of the parts car and only four or five of the bare shell, a seller who wouldn't reply to emails and only a "buy it now" button......well what I did was tell the missus I had bought the cars, showed her lovely pictures of restored ones, when she wasn't mad "what ever makes you happy" I asked her to marry me and hit "BUY IT MOTHERF%#*IN NOW" Always wanted a 240z, currently rocking Italian, a Lancia Fulvia, front driver, 1.3 V4, an amazing daily driver but to add to the fleet I wanted something Japanese, rear wheel drive, more cylinders and more grunt......but the climbing prices meant I would never afford it, until the seller answered my prayers. After a few weeks of organising a transport for myself and the cars from merry auld england over the sea to the Emerald Isle. Here is what greeted me After an epic trip that involved 7 trains two and 10 hours on two ferries in a gale so bad the boat couldn't dock. Got the cars on the transporter home, Val McKenna 087 2658069 reversed that 10 car transporter down a country lane I thought would have been impossible, defo recommend him to move a car Uk to Ireland or mainland europe without hesitation. So eventually the cars are home in my lockup Just about squeezed in. So to make more room and to make working on the shell easier I welded up a rotisserie Designed it so the steel would all fit in the Fulvia Jacking the shell up onto the spit took hours and had the car nearly fall on me multiple times. I had the jacks on two wheels and an one meter section of I-beam I found. Sketchy as f%*k. But its up there now so its bodywork time. I've read this thread a few times Making panels.......thread and have ordered a few books on panel making and patch repairs so am excited to get trying but am under no illusion that this is going to be anything other than a few years in the making.... Lots of horrible repairs on this shell but then that's why I bought it and why I could buy it. But most importantly I have a "soundsystem"! Let the games begin!

Nice! Love the 240.. Before you start welding chek the alignement of the car! Is is straight? It would be a shame to Invest years of hard Work in something that makes 3 tracks in the snow! Nice welding skils on the spit! You could make a jig for the car!
Good luck! Will bookmar this

You do know "what ever makes you happy" doesn't usually mean what it sounds like it means Ah well, the deed is done now. Good luck with it. Did I catch that right, you're in Ireland?

Big project there, but you certainly seem determined! Good luck sir By the way, there's been quite a Fulvia wave on RR as of late, don't hesitate to put up a thread on yours! I believe yours would be he only one with the UK headlights!

Been slow getting some bits together for the restoration, Especially getting my hands on Zintec sheet steel 8ft x 4ft sheets of 0.9mm and 1.5mm are easy to buy but proved hard to transport back to garage uncut, Ended up getting a mate of a mate to collect them using his massive transit. But that ended up taking three weeks because he went off sick. So I busied myself with some other preparations for the restoration. First I nabed a fantastic deal on a secondhand vice This thing is massive and has a handy anvil on it. Then me and my brother welded up a more substantial work table, Would have liked a thicker piece of steel (its 2mm) for the table top but couldnt find any decent cut offs at the steel places I know. It's plenty supported underneath anyway. The 240z shell was quite top heavy on the rotisserie so I added an extra arm off the back pivot point so I could add some counter weights in the form of bags of sand. Turns like a top now Then in the last couple of days I knocked up a cheap copy of Tonybmw's metal bender jig and added some better lighting to the work space. Next job is to weld in some temporary supporting struts for the frame while I'm cutting up the floors and frame rails. Anyone got some advice as to which is the best way to tackle this, cut out and replace the floor first or the frame rails first?

Great stuff Would you believe i knocked back a nice, solid running 240Z for £1000 , this was in 92, a mate owned a bodyshop he had been doing body and structural work to the car for a few months, it was very nearly done then the 240Z's owner went to jail for a long time (attempted murder), told my mate to sell it to get the cost of parts and labour. If only i could turn the clock back

I'd do the frame rails first, using the floor as a guide,, then once they are in place and secure , cut out the floor , doing it in that order will hopefully keep the integrity of the car

Great stuff Would you believe i knocked back a nice, solid running 240Z for £1000 I was offered a Renault 5 Turbo 2 for £6500 once and didn't even go to see it. That was 18 years ago now. To think what thats worth now..... For the 240, wow! What a great project!! I hope you finish it, and what a car it will be! So so soooo very envious of you just now. Top work sir!

Great project rob, you've come a long way since you came down to pull that old fulvia engine out all those years ago. I'll make a trip up to have a snoop if that suits? One thing I learned when I did mine was patience is most definitely a virtue and I've came and went as the money or enthusiasm was there. I know a guy down here who built a 260 a couple of years ago, he'd be fairly knowledgable on them if you need any assistance.

No updates for a while, sh1t is slow as he'll. Seems like everyday I'm down there i break something and spend an hour fixing it. Got tired of pushing the car in and out to make room so I bought a 12v winch and bolted it to the floor at the garage. It's a lifesaver, there is a slight hill outside the garage and at the end of a hard day down there you don't want to be killing yourself pushing it back in, even more so when me missus is ringing looking for me. Was worried about the car distorting when I cut the floor and frame rails out so I put I ton of bracing at the suspension points and all round the body. The big focus for the last few weeks has been building a sheet metal bender. Mainly to help make the frame rails at the bottom of the car all the way to the front suspension and radiator mount. These are all rotten to hell. Car is on its side on the rotisserie This is version 3.0 of the sheet metal bender and just today this too fail on me, Was trying to bend some 1.5 zintec when a whole bunch of welds let go and everything went curse word up. I don't think I'm up to rebuilding it for a third time so may just cut the pieces I was out mark the up then bring them to an engineering place to get them bent up. Anyone had trouble with name brand benders letting go when bending sheet. It was a 66cm piece of 1.5mm that did the deed on me, I thought I had over built it to f8ck but..... Woops Sorry if those photos aren't clear but basically it broke good.....

Mark Pray tell I have yet to see another over here, you got a lead on another, any spare parts?
Kev auld salt!! Get up here yesterday and have a look, I need some experienced eye on this! How is your build going? Was just thinking the other day how strong that engine is going.
Thanks Grumpy i will definitely plow some money into getting a set of those when the bank account allows, she seems quite straight from my measuring though so I'm hopeful.
