Thanks! Its because i have nothing better to do Mended the spraygun. Cleaned and rebuilt it, still wouldnt work properly, turned out the vent at the top was blocked and it was pulling a vacuum. With that, first proper coat is on: Apologies for the awful photo, my camera wont take a decent photo without a flash and with the flash on all you could see was airbourne paint.

Well, the paint i received is definitely the wrong colour. I've done four or five coats now and you can see the colour mismatch when compared to the factory paint... Blast!

Were you not repainting the whole thing anyway? If there's enough to do the whole car it's not a problem. It's looking really good now too, far better than my own efforts.

Ive been looking at photos of flame red. Because thats what it looks like. Above photo is my car in the colour it should be, Targa. Below is a flame red car, which is a striking match to what i've sprayed. don't know what to do, i've spent 70 quid and been delivered paint that isn't the right colour, i've contacted them, but I'm not expecting them to do anything about it.

Great thread, just sent our 93 Italian Job into the bodyshop. Eye watering repair costs, especially after looking at your repairs and hoping that they do them to the same standard! Would love to have a go but house move and time are not on our side! Shame about the paint colour, that is a proper ball ache!

Would love to have a go but house move and time are not on our side! Shame about the paint colour, that is a proper ball ache! Worst case scenario, i'll just paint the p6 with it, as i'd planned to do it red anyway, but it is a bit annoying, as it means i need to do the underside again. Oh and the only tip i'd give is to make sure they don't fit oversills!, and use the correct pressings for floors, inner sills etc.

Been working towards getting the car rolling. With that, i've painted the brand new subframe in gloss enamel for a bit of extra protection. The trunnions have been cleaned up and repainted, as have the mounting pins. Bought a full set of poly bushes, and fitted the rear brake hoses and handbrake cable while i was at it: I then needed to re-drill the trunnion holes as most had vanished when i welded all the new metal in, so i test fitted it Sits a few mm high on one side but not a bad result at all i think! Then set about the engine bay. Wasnt after concourse here either as itll only get covered in dirt after 1000 miles anyway. Just wanted a nice uniform colour so i spent a half hour or so rubbing it back and then put three coats on. More paint tomorrow with any luck...

Honest answer, I prefer flame red over targa. Targa looks a bit like faded darker red - flame is fresh and looks great on a Mini. Isn't its similar colour to what the Coopers were painted in?

I just like the darker red, thats all, plus its an LE.
Its not the end of history, i'm just going to do the car in this colour as i cant be bothered with faffing about and spending any more money! Wrong colour aside it'll still be the nicest mini i've ever owned, everything is refurbished and there is no bodging. So cant complain.

My Mini is Targa red and it was a real pain to get the colour matched. The first batch was very bright like yours so I got them to alter it a bit. It was better but still not perfect. I can't remember what the story was now but it could have been there were a few shades.
Yous is looking good though, far more paint than they had originally and that was all splattered with the underbody wax Rover used, missing all the important bits !

I have the same problem getting paint for my transporters, They are both GREYWHITE but if you order grey white its too bright.. Like fridge white.
So i called them up and it turns out theres 3 shades, of grey white, *grey white *grey white -yellow *grey white ++yellow.
I got the mid one which worked on my t5, but is too bright for my t4.... its a minefield..

The paint is a pain and so is the person that sold it to me! Nevermind eh. On my own in a fit of fury this car is now waxoyled underneath, and on its front and rear frames. Clear waxoyl is a nightmare and i'll be using Dynax in future, only used it cos i had it in stock. Put it on its front wheels because it fell off its stands three times trying to get the rear up on stands. Will need to touch up the underside! Engine in on the weekend, if all goes to plan...

Well today was the day! Having made some rocker studs to replace the curse word ones that sheared and stripped, i rebuilt the engine, torqued everything down, and did the tappets five times until they were perfect. With that, me and a friend scooted the engine into the shed. Always useful to have a friend to guide it in Only one scratch as it went in. Last mini engine I did was on my gold one and I did that on my own so a better result this time! The paint has bloomed in the engine bay anyway, so i need to see about buffing that up. Other than that, and a captive nut on the engine mount giving way, a successful day.

Work continues, been a bit of a break because i got bored of painting, but back at it now. Rear offside suspension is pretty much there. Managed to source some cones, proper dunlop ones, but of course being a mini they wouldnt come off the suspension trumpets. I spent 20 minutes with hammers and chisels with no luck, in the end i sacrificed the trumpet and hacksawed them off. The metal baskets they sit in had also rusted away completely, but the cones themselves were fine height wise, so i just happened to have some that had fallen off some collapsed cones. Some no-nails later and some hammerite and they are looking decent again. Standard height for a new cone is 90mm, these are 87 and 82mm respectively. I will adjust the difference out on the adjusta-ride's and jobs a goodun. 100 quid saved. Main task this weekend was to paint the inside so i can start bolting things to it. Like pedals, column etc. And put the loom in when i've sorted it. Lots of sanding and a few coats later: Looks nicer in the photo than it actually is, but i just wanted it all in one colour. Then, the ultimate challenge. The offside radius arm came with my mk3 and was nearly new. Still had the sticker on it and and a newish wheel cylinder. It came with a pair but i sold one in an attempt to get some money back on the shell purchase. Wish i hadnt now, of the two nearside ones i had left, both were knackered, as i found out when i tried to remove the pin. Check out this beauty, this is your usual mini starting point. It took a huge punch and a lump hammer to free the pin from the arm. It had rusted to the bearings, proof of how well maintained this car had been. When i did get the pin free, it looked like this: Which is what happens when you don't grease moving parts periodically, like you're supposed to. It took me a further hour to get the bearings out of the arms (in several pieces), and another hour to strip and clean it. The rear adjuster on the drum sheared so it needs a new backplate, but can probably rescue the rest of it. I've ordered a refurbishment kit so when that arrives i will have this arm back in shape again. Once thats done, and its painted, the car should be rolling on its back wheels! Its a lot of 'when i do this, i can do this, but i need to do this first' at this point... More soon.
