This is a theoretical exercise The break point for the lower VED band in a pre March 2001 vehicle is 1549cc. Whilst there are the 1400cc K Series & Zetec I've been thinking and 1400cc to 1550cc seems to be a dead zone for MODERN engine capacities. Accepted there was the 1500 VW (both aircooled and watercooled), 1500cc pre crossflow Ford Kent, 1500 V4 Taunus (I had Saab 95 with one of these), 1500 B Series Austin, Honda Civic 1500, and probably more but they are all older type engines. Are there any modernish engines in the 1400 - 1549cc capacity ? Paul H

Lots of mpg.

Peugeot/citroen tud5, 1527cc, 58bhp/55lbft. Lots of mpg. I should have said petrol engines Overnight I've thought of the Chrysler 1500 fitted to Arrow range and early Avenger. Then there is the Triumph 1500 from Spitfire / Midget & Dolomite. It just seem a little strange the manufacturers make engines in most capacity sizes but 1500cc, and to some extent 1700cc, are ignored. On reflection even 1300cc now seems to be starting to become rare with 1200cc becoming more popular. Who would ever of thought that something like a Focus would be available with a 1.0 engine - or Golf platform vehicles with 1.2 yet have reasonable performance and economy. Seems like the old saying "there ain't no substitute for cubic inches" is no longer strictly true ! What has started me thinking along these lines is I'm considering a pre 2001 Q reg kit car and wondering what options there are to replace a 1300 lump yet still stay within the lower VED band. Paul H

Datsun A15 (1487cc) from the Sunny and Vanette. Mazda E5 (1490cc) as fitted to the 323.
The only modern one I can think of is a Nissan QG15DE which is 1497cc. I don't think it's used here though.

Surely there's heaps of 1.5 litre engines? Am I missing something?
Honda Jazz 1.5 litre = 1496cc Hyundai Excel/Accent = 1495cc Daewoo Lanos/Kalos/Chevy Aveo = 1498cc Mazda 121/Demio 1.5 litre Nissan Pulsar 1.5 litre - The 1.5 litre engine was only really available on the square early '80s ones, at least in Australia. Toyota Echo/Yaris 1.5 litre = 1497cc Mitsubishi Mirage/Lancer 1.5 and hence the Proton Satria 1.5 = 1468cc
That's just a few off the top of my head, the exact cc displacements were sourced from Wikipedia.

With how efficient a slightly larger engine can be you could soon save the difference in car tax, and have something as enjoyable to drive.

Unless you are talking of a particularly light fuel efficient car already.

With how efficient a slightly larger engine can be you could soon save the difference in car tax, and have something as enjoyable to drive. I could also not inform DVLA of increase in capacity but that isn't something I'd consider. Basically it's a case of making every penny count. Why pay £85 pa (£225 for over 1549cc and £140 for under 1549cc) for something I don't want or need ? A modern 1400cc such as a Zetec is probably more powerful and as much torque as a "boat anchor" engine such as 1600cc Pinto anyway. Quick look on Wiki shows 1.6 Sierra E-Max was 75hp / 91 ft lb torque. Fiesta 1388cc Zetec is 89hp / 92 ft lb torque ! At the end of the day I might stick with 1300cc but was also considering the options. Paul H

I've driven a couple of the twin cam Hyundai Accents and found that they go really well for a 1.5 litre engine! On paper, I think the quickest one should be a Honda Jazz, but they weren't out until 2001, so that may not be acceptable for your tax/rego purposes.

A Renault 5 turbo/Fiat Uno turbo will probably give the most power in the sub 1549cc tax bracket.

How about the Fiat 1.4 FIRE engine? you can get the 16v 100hp version from the panda 100hp?
The Zetec/Sigma 1.25 is a very keen little engine but probably not the most powerful out there

slightly under the size you are looking for but I can recommend the Vauxhall corsa sxi its a 1.2 16 valve twinport if you rev it above 3500 rpm its a little screamer and they also made a 1.4sr1 /sxi

Vauxhall Corsa 1.5 TD (Isuzu engine), nippy enough if you tweak them up a bit.

Well, if it is theoretical anyway.
Couldn't you build yourself a Ford CVH turbo, mixing some 1.3, 1.4 and 1.6 engine parts together?

I think I prefer the idea of a supercharger compared to a turbo. Three of my vehicles (Skoda Fabia, Smart Fortwo & Peugeot Expert 2.0 HDi) are turbo intercooled and I don't like the way the power is delivered. With supercharger even a 1300cc will have more power than a 1500CC Paul h

Yaris t-sport had a 1500cc engine, 105bhp, silly variable timing lark etc
Went well enough when you found the sweet spot, something of a struggle with the curse word gearbox they fitted, but you wouldn't be using that anyway...

Peugeot Tu3s engine from the 205 xs/gt had 85 horses on a twin choke carb. They have made more on mg twin carbs. What about Polo G40 lump. 1.4 supercharged?
