Earlier today we got our hands on a new project. After a fair bit of reading online we decided to get our hands on a Skyteam Ace as a fun little custom project. For reasons that will be revealed soon we decided to go with the 50cc and over the next couple of months we will be customising the little racer and smoothing out some of the made-in-china imperfections. The bike is brand new, registered and runs quite nicely, so first thing was to get it up on the stand and see how it was all bolted together. After a thorough look over the precision could certainly be better in a few spots, but they seem pretty well put together for the price. We are looking to both improve performance a little and clean up the aesthetics of the bike, so first up was to remove the rubber tank strap. We have something far nicer in mind for this area. The big bulky rear guard and taillight has to go too but we have a pretty clever idea of how to deal with this issue. We will also be looking for a new manifold to rotate the carby into a position where the airbox can be scrapped and a filter fitted. Does anyone know why there is a massive restricter in the current manifold? There doesn't seem to be a lot of information on improving the performance of the little 50cc model, so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

the resrictor is to limit the power so its run as a "moped".
I like these as they look a good homage to the racing honda's

In a lot of countries you can ride 50cc and 30 miles per hour max speed with no licence. So its probably limited by carb, exhaust or gearing to that. If it does more than 30 ish then it's not restricted

Probably wrong but I believe the original Honda used the engine from the cb50j which may be the same as the xr75 dirt bike, a friend got a bit more go from his cb50 by opening the inlet and punching through a couple of exhaust baffles. If I am wrong with engine info please accept my apologies. On a positive note a few years ago a dealer near me had a couple of the Hondas, truly gorgeous but just too small for my fat 6 ft butt Ttfn Glenn

Thanks for that, so the blockage is likely designed for other countries but left in for all (Most states in Australia don't have moped laws). I will pull it out next time I get near the bike and see what happens.

they're usually restricted by exhaust or gearing not airbox alone.
perhaps the airbox just needed sleeved down for the little engine to stop it running lean. But if it is a resyriction you will likely need to derestrict exhaust also and maybe upjet carb
if it does more than thirty its not restricted anyway

Thanks, there's not much on the site yet about the 50cc version, but I have emailed them to see what engine goodies they may have available. A little more progress today: Pulled the restriction out of the manifold. Still runs fine without it, although it seems super rich with the choke on - smoky and won't rev, turn it off and it revvs out nicely and idles just fine. I also started mocking up alternative rear guards and modifications to the chainguard, but the main project for today was the seat. While I understand that the original seat is a tribute to the Dream 50, the rounded shape never really made sense to me against the square tank, the front of the seat doesn't align nicely with the tank, and I don't find the padding overly comfortable. In order to make things flow a bit better I took rather drastic action with a spare fueltank. What do you think so far?

You certainly seem to be prolific in customising small bikes recently! Are you starting to do this semi-professionally? The workshop in your photos looks pretty serious and you've now got at least three bikes on the go at once. Best of luck to you if that's the case.
In terms of upgrading the performance, it would seem that the logical thing to do would have been to buy the 125cc version in the first place, unless you need the 50cc to ride it on a car licence.

I was on my bike at traffic lights when one of these pulled alongside me a few weeks. I think they look great. I'm not a bike guy really but thought it looked very cool on the streets of London amongst the typical scooters.

Matching the seat fairing to the tank looks good & makes perfect sense.. As might getting 50cc if you wanted to dump it for something bigger than 150cc anyway. Assuming the rest of the bike was the same as the 125cc model. Looking forward to seeing it progress.

Hi Waveman, you are absolutely correct. As of the last couple of weeks of 2013 I have left my job of 5 years and made Suus my full time career. Custom small capacity motorcycles and components, furniture and pushbikes and quality clothing are now my business. I am hoping to have a website up shortly, in the meantime the facebook is up and running at facebook.com/suuscustoms I am awaiting official confirmation before letting everyone know the reasoning, but basically the 50 has to stay a 50cc for racing purposes Hopefully I will be able to confirm our entry into the competition and provide some more detail shortly.

A little more progress has been made on the Skyteam this week. Rear guard brackets are mocked up, will hopefully be functional by the end of Friday. Jets are about to be ordered to get the carby running a little richer Seat is coming along nicely. Pan is nearly complete, tail shape is about right and we have started looking at taillights. The one attached at present is our favourite so far. Indicators have been reused at correct spacing for Australian Standards and seat brackets have been reused as well for easy fitment and removal.

looking good (again!)
the rear light looks a bit vulnerable to a wallop from the wheel over a big bump, could be worth checking?

Thanks guys,
I have yet to measure the rear light clearance with the suspension fully compressed, it may be close.
As for frenching it into the tail, that was the first preference, but it was simply too large for the height of the tail.

You could French it half way up, to the line of the 'stop' lettering? Might need a Photoshop of that one first to check the concept.

Hi guys! It's time to make an exciting announcement I've been waiting for confirmation about. On February 28th this year we will be taking the Ace SALT LAKE RACING! We will be heading over to Lake Gairdner in South Australia to compete in the 50cc modified production gasoline category at the DLRA's Speed Week 2014. As a result we have been busily prepping the bike for racing. The new seat is almost complete, handlebars are all set up now with a substantially lower bar height, headlight and indicators are gone, new jets in the carby and the exhaust has been opened up. For those wondering where the main restriction is in the 50cc exhaust, the easiest way to get to it is to cut the seam that is overlapped by the exhaust mounting bracket. you will find the main restrictor hanging in there. I have left the baffles in there to give a little bit of backpressure, but the corrogated restrictor had to go.
