thinking about the dude who bought the VW camper for spares and kept it brand new, I was thinking what car could you buy now hoping it would become a classic/retro in the future? this is my first. If this car does not become a classic, I would chop my nuts... rules are: 1) must be in current production 2) must not be a retro replica (like the new mustang or the ford GT40).

everything will be retro when its old enough lol.. the real problem is new cars seem to be built from curse word and people swap them too much, so at 10yrs old a car's only good wnough for scrap. so there wont be as many old cars as there are now, to a point anyway.

Its more about the fact that its not financial sense to keep them runnig past about 7-10 years more than build issues.
I would say future retro fodder will be
Ford Ka Citroen 1007 (much as I ***hate*** them) Ford Focus (icon of an era, says it all really) Lotus Elise Dunno, can;t really think of many current production European/Asian cars.

a saxo, corsa, civic, golf and so on that hasnt been modified has got to be worth a few bob in 20 yrs time, that seems to be the real killer of small cars nowadays.

OK, so not in production any more (mostly because no-one understood what they were FOR or were brave enough to go against the Audi/BMW/Merc etc grain)
* Renault Vel Satis * Renault Avantime
Both fabulously odd, and likely to be rarer than a Matra Rancho in the future. Mmmmm. Yummy.

Mmmmm. Yummy. Renault Vel statis in 3.5 V6 petrol form are suprisingly rapid. However i wouldn't fancy one without a warranty. Also i managed to use 80 litres in 200 miles in one, which made it less economical than my Chevelle. ;D I rhink the latest civics and the Seat leon/Altea could well become classics too.

New Astra and Mondeo must be in with a shot: I reckon the Fiesta ST will go the same way as the original XR2 And I know this one breaks the rules by being out of production but the Mk2 Mondeo is starting to remind me of a Cortina already

I’m not sure how feasible it will be to run today’s cars as retro motors in 15-20+ years time. All that safety equipment, reliance on electronics and use of plastic that degrades over time will make them nigh-on impossible to maintain on a sensible budget, whereas simpler cars up to, say, the mid-late 80’s can always be bodged somehow. Especially if they’re RWD.
Regardless of the above, it’s tricky to judge what should be stashed away. To me cars only become interesting when they take on their own character after people have owned them and done things with them, not what the manufacturers would like us to think.

whilst it sickens me to say this, but the saxo VTR/VTS is destined for retro-dom, if only because, like the 205GTI & mk1 golf GTI, finding a good one these days is like finding poor quality wobbly children's play pony curse word. They all get modified or thrashed within an inch of their lives.

Future retros IMHO: New Fiat Panda 4x4: For Cougar (2002 not exactly new but I reckon a future retro): The C3 Pluriel (because you know in 20 years time loads of us 2cv nutters will have one):

Mk 1 Ford Focus. Stunning piece of automotive design. Probably the best family car ever made.

anything with competition success (scoobies?)
anything that young lads want now but cant afford till they're 50,
anything that looks cute,
anything thats still on the road after 30 years (this is gonna be the killer, cars last much longer now so there will be more left, hence lower values, BUT all you need is an ECU to go down that not being remade and a 15 or 20 year old car will go to the scrappies where they wont be piled up, they'l be broken up for parts and recycling)

I agree on the Cougar, Fiat Multipla, as much as I really really hated them when the new one came out they've grown on me. Anything that striking will probably become iconic, I know they're a re-make but they're so bloody ugly. Plus I also vote for anything that Citroen have made recently, new Espace etc. And the newer Renault range, following in the striking footsteps of the Vel Satis/ Avantime. Did any of those actually sell over here?

BUT all you need is an ECU to go down that not being remade and a 15 or 20 year old car will go to the scrappies My theory is that, much like how you can buy a £5 box that emulates/contains a Commodore 64 and other retro-era computers now (they all seemed SO advanced at the time!), someone may make a one-box-fits-all emulator ECU system for older cars... My knowledge of electronics is sketchy, but I DO know how quickly technology moves forwards

5th gen Honda Prelude. I have never really liked newer cars, but I love my 97 Prelude. Its so nice and simple, no loads of plastic under the bonnet, just a fairly attractive 16v single cam 2.0i engine. I don't get afraid at the thought of wrenching on it either And it goes ok too Mine can be seen in the background here They have a special design too, quite good looking in my eyes, will be even better when i get my JDM front fog lights and JDM Type-S front lip

I was thinking along the same lines as Darrenw, as the cars become worth less it`ll become obvious no-ones going to pay £1000 for a replacement ECU, and suddenly there will come about either as a said a universal black box, a way of bypassing the whole thing or a way of making say any Astra ECU from a scrapyard lose its identity and "talk to" any other Astra, rather than making it run like a bag of spanners for no reason. I mean these boxes werent even there 20 years ago and in some cases (endura E for example) we`re looking at the same engines but now with a problem box attached.
I remember a few years ago a Fiat Brava/Bravo would need £1500 spending on it if it lost its red key, apparently. I never heard of any actual cases where this happened, but this was back when n-one would think of scrapping one as they were still current and worth some wedge, now theres loads of worthless ones running about suddenly its fine to run it on whatever colour key you want and the red key never even gets referred to, they must have sorted something out I know of quite a few people who only have a blue key and they`ve had the car a few years.
