i agree, wouldnt have one, my firm when they give out cars will offer money instead, id have that. I'm just saying modern cars don't appeal, at all. My wife has a 12 year old car, i see that as modern, its boring and costly but its useful when collecting retro parts and cars. Modern cars to buy? no. give me a ferrari as a gift and i would sell it. thems my principles and I'm sticking too them.

I thought it was a debt management advert about someone pretending to have it all with his new car but couldn't actually afford any of it.

Not surprised, its hard to tell these days what car adverts are trying to say. Cant beat mid - 80s Franchise dealer adverts, you knew what you were getting "The New 5-door Nissan Sunny SLX comes with metallic paint, radio cassette and five speed gearbox as standard, all for just £3995 on the road. Ask your dealer about a test drive. Oh go on." And all you`d see is a studio shot of a dog`s cock red example of the car and a man in beige farrahs, slip-ons and a "pullover" would get in and start it up, before making very heavy weather of putting it into gear and slowly driving out of shot. None of this arty clever "what the f*ck is this an advert for?" bo11ox.

well I'm limited to one that is five years old or less, has to have a fixed roof, not 4x4 and four full seats. I do 10k work miles and 25k private miles and it costs less than £1600 for a fully expensed brand new Saab 9-3 TiD. The opt out with 45mpg would leave me £400 per year to buy a car with, or cost an extra £300 per year if I got a std petrol one at 35mpg, and that doesn't even include buying the thing! As it is I'll save my £300 and put it to a nice little smoker when I get a place with a garage. 8) No brainer really, unless you can think of a retro car that fits all of the above criteria for less than £1200? BB PS We have a choice of vectra, saab 9-3 or Passat, how depressing is that!

Bill I don't disagree that it makes sense to let them pay for a car for you, indeed a no brainer, just given the choice id rather drive what i want and be out of pocket (it makes no odds as the best i can hope for is they crappy pool car)

If I was offered a company car I'd take it and make it fun by doing all the stuff I wouldn't dream of doing in my existing cars.
Like drive it across a big field, jump over humpback bridges. That sort of thing.

I don’t know about you but it certainly does not make me want to go out and buy a Volkswagen. You're probably not the target audience for the advert, it's not MEANT to appeal to the likes of you or I

None of this arty clever "what the f*ck is this an advert for?" bo11ox. Yeah, whats that one where its some lame far eastern supermini and the advert is all "What! When? Where! How?" FFS or that really annoying one for the Kia Picanto, "the thinking girls shopping trolley".... with the squeaky voice over. Puuuhlease, At least they told you what it is and what its for. Its for bimbos to go buy shoes in. One I was disappointed in was the (again Kia) ad for the diesel car that manages to pass the normal bates gas station in the dersert, so avoiding the driver getting bummed to death and eaten alive. Now I'd have rather they shot that with someone who forgot to fill up befote they left civilisation and then it all gets a bit like "Deliverance" with elements of "The Hills Have Eyes". Yeah, that would be cool. I still wouldn't buy a Kia but I might not be so minded to shout obscenities at the TV.

Hey i'd have a company car, if they wouldn't put up cash instead. piling loads of miles onto a new car that i don't have to get greasy with, sounds pretty good! leaving weekends evenings etc to get greasy with my loved ones. cant see me buying one though, i'd get what i needed and have it serviced propperly often if i needed it for work and could afford.

That sort of thing. Isn't that the whole point of company vehicles though?? I've had numerous 'company' vehicles down the years, mostly small vans, and I am pleased to have mullered all of them, with the exception of an M-reg Astra Van which seemed to be indestructable. Nothing we tried would have any effect... I was particularly pleased a few months back to have broked a brand new Focus before I'd even got it out of the end of the street.

A lot of jobs you don't need a company car. I didn't. A lot of people find that they can substitute "driving around a bit" for actual work, so they do that. Number of people who want to come have a meeting with me for no real good reason is amazing. Waste my time, waste theirs, waste the fuel to do it. A lot of sales reps and consultant typoes want to be in your face in person all the time (so you can't just hang up on them or have a "computer error" duing their webcast).
Thing is a compnay car is taxed as a benefit, a mileage allowance on your own car is tax free. If I did 10,000 miles a year for business that would be just shy of five and a half grand! Tax free...
Its all part of the whole congestion and f**ked lifestyle issues that the late 20th century has created for us. The roads are full of trucks and "business travellers" selling sh!t nobody really needs to people who don't want it to keep the wheels of industry oiled.

The worst example has to be the field sales dept. at my old workplace, The Yorkshire Evening Post. My customers were quite happy being pestered endlessly on the phone, and if they were tricked into buying an advert the proof would be emailed to them and the bill sent through the post. For no apparent reason, some clients needed a tosser in an Astra to go and see them on a regular basis. The field sales reps probably spent most of their time in a gym, tanning place or getting pulled off in a brothel, and if they did go to see a client, the client probably thought "great, I`m going to have to break off to sort that dickwad out". WHY?

Right now we're talking, spot on, this is what I would like fully addressing before were shafted taxed anymore, and made to feel any more guilty! Having paid £99 for my right on my roads for 6 months and the kids being off, i'm enjoying a few drives to work this week. I have my eye on a nice fast commuter bike though, can't with to get that, keep it real!

Just going back to the original topic for a second, Personally if i don't understand one of these 'arty' TV ads i assume they aren't aimed at me and don't feel obliged to buy whatever they are selling. Company cars are great, I have one and it mean't i could get rid of my Golf and buy something stupid and impractical.
