I have just become joint custodian of a pile of scimitar shaped fiberglass and rust, unfortunately previous owner has lost docs and plates. Is there any way of finding the registration from the chassis numbers, Have passed on details to the scimitar registrar but they are unable to help with the registration. Seems if unable to find out the original number we will have to go through all the red tape and aggro of re registering. Anyone able to help? Ttfn Glenn

A helpful traffic officer might be able to help.
Or possibly someone in the trade that does hpi or vic's.

A helpful traffic officer might be able to help. Unlikely it can cost them their job... Trade HPI on the chassis number will show the reg. Alternatively DVLA local office can do this depending on how they feel.

Wander into your local DVLA office looking smart and tidy, smile sweetly at the lovely lady behind the counter, possibly even bring a simple task (sorn / tax etc.) to break the ice. Once you have built up an adequate rapport, slide the piece of paper you have scrawled your VIN on under the glass, and ask if she could possibly check it on the computer to find out the reg.
Worked for me :-)

Currently sweet talking a local garage/car sales to see if they can help, have to catch the owners as they do the hpi, so far the mechanic is onside, if this dosent pan out may try the Vosa test station as its only a couple of miles away. Thanks for the suggestion will add that to the options list. Ttfn Glenn

No success with local garage, what they use cant work from vin. Local dvla office (Glasgow) closes mid December but unlikely to be able to visit in time, so will try a phone call, if unsuccessful will try local Vosa office, the final option will be the local traffic office Ttfn Glenn

VOSA station won't be interested in helping. Fill out a V62 enclosing PO or cheque for £25 with a brief cover note explaining the circumstances of your ownership along with the chassis number and any other details you can give about the car and you should have the details in about six weeks. send the V62 to....VC15 Masset, Longview Road, Morriston, Swansea, SA67JL.
DVLA will then send you a V5C.

Had seen the v62 before but thought it could only be used with the registration number. Got to be worth a try Ttfn Glenn

Not to steal your thread, but does anybody know how to check the vin number from the registration number only, as the vin number on the Reliant Robin could be anything (has oxidized, so hard to read digits).

Have tried rubbings, and it's still hard to see what is what.

According to the website, an HPI won't give me the VIN number, i have to input that myself which won't help me.

They did last time, its one of the reasons to run a check.....to see if it matches the car and plates, however you can apply for the logbook without it, just put not found in the section where it asks for it. Is the number actually stamped into the chassis or just on an alloy plate?

Well i put in the reg and paid and it's asking for the vin number to check. The number seems to be on the alloy plate only, and that has weathered a bit so you can hardly read it.
