those are the sod who sent me on a 7:10 from Nottingtham to Exeter, changing at Derby for the 7:50 direct express service. When I arrived at Derby I asked the station geezer where the 7:50 went from (it being 7:40 at this point) and he said "oh that goes at 7:30 now, has done for months". Next one is at 9:45, but it stops at every station.
Not that the book would have been much better either.
But they are still barstards.

I don't use trains. They're slow, expensive and bad for the environment. TBH I didn't even know they printed the timetable thingy in the first place! ;D

I don't use trains. They're slow, expensive and bad for the environment. after leaving the sapph to rest, my return train ticket (£9.20), one way tram (£1.90) it cost me 2.25 hours and £11.10 for 35 miles (70 inc return trip), that wont nudge me outta me car for Evar, car tenners petrol approx plus running costs and 40minutes. theoretically the train should be ace! it should.

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

trains had the lowest co2 per passenger mile and per ton of frienght mile last I looked.
When we went down to London to pick up the Chrysler it cost £8 one way from Nottingham plus a quid or two on the underground. Even without the congestion charge I can't do it on petrol for that. It certainly cost more to bring the car home.
So they can make it cost effective.
But not all the time. If I wanted to go mid day same ticket would have been £40.
I always used the train when business took me to London or Manchester because its not worth even trying in London and our offices were near Manchester Airport station. The drive up there is an ass from Nottingham. I also prefer the train to go to Birmingham if I'm going into the city. But work picks up the train ticket so I have no idea what they cost...
I'd deffo use the trian more if they were cheaper and you could guarantee not having to share a carridge with a family of loud drunk scousers on their way back from Torremelenos. (although in fairness this has only happened once)

I love going on the train! Just not in the UK, where the ticket costs are a fuggin disgrace (£240 return edinburgh-london). Its invariably cheaper to drive there in a Pontiac GTO with the choke stuck on.
I once went for a long train trip in Romania, station was too busy to buy a ticket, just bribe the guard when he comes along. Lovely. The bribe was only about £4 for a 2.5 hour journey, punctuality-wise it was bob-on an' all. Sit on the train floor passing a bottle of rum around... now thats what I call commuting.

Thumbs up for British trains, I spent a year of travelling to college and back on the train and paid about three times, can't drive a car for free! I think more money needs to be put into the rail system, like they did in Belgium, put freight back on the tracks and take it off the roads, run services to all the small stations again and get passenger numbers up so ticket prices can come down. The government always bang on about public transport but have made it too expensive for the average person to choose over a car. But trains are fun, when you get a seat anyway.

Thing that f*cks me off about trains is that the ticket system works the exact opposite to airlines: Last minute air ticket is cheaper, as the plane is going anyway so they might as well fill the seats. Last minute train ticket is more expensive. WTF?! Last time I used the train it cost me £98 from Notts to Newquay. Took me about 9 hours too. Even in my gas guzzler it cost me £40 in fuel and took 6 hrs at a leisurely pace

not all last minute flights are cheaper. I remember booking the flights out to the US last autumn and they went up £80 in a week as we were just waiting for a replacement car to come!

Best trains are in Holland, nearly all double deckers! Mind you, I havent exactly been all around the world so I havent got that much to compare them to.
You always see loads of scrapyards you never knew were there when travelling by train in this country, but I can never work out how you`d actually get to them.

thats what Google Earth is for.
No really, 4 guys sitting round the watercooler and one of them says
"Dude, you like ever, you know go on like a train and then you see a scrap yard, but you can't like work out how to get to it man?"
"yo, dude, like I feel that man"
"well, if we got like photos of the whole world we could put them on like the computer and stuff and people could like search and see wherre the roads were and like see stuff"
"wooooooah, totally tubular dude"
"Yeah, like I'm totally there"
And so it came to pass.

I travel on the train everyday Bath to Swindon and twice a week into London. Its expensive but a lot more relaxing than going by car on the evil M4. Getting the train to work means I can enjoy driving as a hobby!
