V40 is a good shout too:-) I've had mine 2 years and done 30k miles in it. Factory fit lpg system is neat and makes it cheap to run:-)
Can't link from my phone but there is a V40 Bifuel on fleabay needing a clutch, starting bid 400;-)

Multipla. Get all 3 of you in the front, and the dog and lots of stuff in the back with the seats down. Check out EmDee's old toad to see how cool they can be...

True, to make a automatic badass. You need at least need a v8 in there. However, I recon these have tons of potential. Alfa 156 Audi 80 Avant Rover 400 Skoda Octavia

we've bought a Mercedes Benz w210 E420 wagon for my wife to drive around town..
very comfy barge and quick if you put your foot down as well, but otherwise a very smooth drive..
these are plenty available for around 1000 pounds

Galant Legnum. we have 2 kids and a Rhodesian Ridgeback and I had to give up my supra when the horde first came along, so we brought one. It seriously is the best car I have ever owned. nothing went wrong in the 3 years I had it. Ours was an auto as my wife has problems with her shoulders. You wont get a VR4 for a grand, but you can easily pick up a 2.5V6, which is no slouch. even the 2.0 is capable of 120 ish.

I've got a Golf 3 Variant 1.8 Happy Hours, lovely ride really and plenty of space in the back. Although it might be a bit basic interiorwise for some.

E34 touring. For sure.
Bigger and roomier than the e30, 525tds auto wouldnt be a problem in terms of mpg and reliability, full of coolness and retroness too!

Contrary to popular opinion, I do have mechanical sympathy, I always feel sorry for the cars I drive.
