here i am at a show on sunday, doing my thing for the benefit of skoda love everywhere. quote of the day (overheard) oik 1: do you think anyone will beat the micra [rat micra-eventual sound-off winner] oik 2: don't think so... oik 3: well, maybe just the skoda, if he turned his subs on this time lol. two runs and i forgot to put the subs on first time. curse word. got 116.6dB on the front components, and 122.3dB with the subs on. in my defence i got them wired up on friday evening, hadnt tested them, and the level and gain were almost at the very minimum... anyway, this is a modified car show, but still got a few good 'uns. post up soon as. please to anticipate capri on polished revolutions, r30(?) liner...

'How loud is your stereo' competitions is surely the most pointless form of automotive willy-waving matches.
I just don't understand what it's all about.

I can see how it could be fun putting it up the boys who have spent thousands with a £200 build though.

Oh yeah! Doing anything with a Skoda that involves destroying the stereotype is cool!

'How loud is your stereo' competitions is surely the most pointless form of automotive willy-waving matches. I just don't understand what it's all about. Its like anything we do. Theres no "point" to it. Kinda like rolling road compos, burnout contests, drifting, etc. Its something that is done by blokes and therefor it can be done competitively. Absolutely ANYTHING done by blokes can be made into a contest. And then an industry springs up around it. SPL contests, DB Drag , SQ+ all that - its just some guys having some fun. If you've never been in a car with something like a proper competition system in it and felt the buzz you won't get it. I was in a mates old Fiat Brava with a Cerwin Vega Stroker 18 (old skool!) in a hheee-uge ported box (took up half the car) strapped amps (possibly Directed 1110Ds) on each voice coil. Playing NIN "Head Like A Hole" watching the glass flex and realising that reality wasn't quite what I thougtht it was. Fuggin wierd. Sat in another car, my whole chest cavity was wobbling about, couldn't breath properly and my voice went all micky mouse - (Imagine Micky Mouse with "a posh northern accent") and that was weird I've seen coins jumping on the roof of Escorts, well, Escort roofs flecing and even seen a sunroof pop out LOL. Yeah, its silly but its a laugh. You should see the SQ contests then, thats where they get RTA data and plot the width and depth of your sound stage and all that freaky stuff. People buying £150 a metre cable because its tonally more neutral... Audiophile crazy stuff. In a car... why not?

like akku said, its a bloke thing, involving BITS, and competition! the car is slow(ish) and ungainly. it has lots of interior space though. re (ish): apparently now the car is deemed 'fast' by enough people for it to stick. i convoyed down to the show and made sure i wasn't outrun on any of the wee blats. amply. note lack of rear spoiler because it vibrated when subs were in use. and got beaten by a mate running 2 500wrms cerwin vega 12"s. he melted four fuses on his amp. tube.

But it's not like you even have anything to watch. And from what I can gather these 'sound-offs' entails playing 'frequencies' rather than anything resembling music. Now if they were playing 'the who' at full tip, it might be more interesting. I find the whole concept both dull and anti-social. </old grump>

I spose it's a bit like drag racing. 'They drive for 1/4 mile down the strip going as fast as possible as loudly as possible'. Wheres the fun in that ehh?

I don't get it either, however SQ+ i do get. Volume is absolutlely irellevent, but sound quality is important. However, I'm 100% sure the people who enter contests for this sort of thing are quite blinkered, the same as home hi fi audiophiles. I admit, I'm an audiophile. I'm always striving to get a little more treble controll or slightly tighter bass etc etc. However, you don't need to spend big bucks to do it and I'm sure the same is true for in car hi fi. Big buck cables are nonsence. My home system cost me £1000 but i built it all myself and it will outperform systems costing 10 times that out the shops. Ive always been integued about doing the same kind of thing in car, but at the end of the day a car is a curse word listening room and the engines too loud and it will only get nicked. You also need valves to get great mid band (in my opinion) and vlaves don't like being vibrated

it was carnology yeah, i stuck my name down for a laugh. reani - maybe it would help if not everyone played low freq tracks, some played a bit of rave, some some dance curse word, personally i stuck with Run DMC & the man Jason Nevins you gotta love the bass too. i like SQ, but SPL isnt all that awful. after all, the best SPL comes from perfecting the sound waves, not just bashing them out as fast/loud as possible. if they're synchronised they sound better AND are louder! more capri (and other) pics to follow. imageshack is taking forever these days.
