I think theres a "bringing back from the dead" thing with a lot of us here. Also with me I like stuff to "keep going", but like reanimation says, theres more to it than that. In fact its quite depressing, really. I love Capris because they remind me of simpler times when everything was exciting and a big deal, rather than the times that are to come which are only going to be harder and less impressive.
I`ve just bought a still-sealed as new Motorola 8700, (big flip phone from the mid `90s - triassic for a mobile phone) because I had one through work in 1997 and it seemed such a big deal then, it seemed like an exciting, cutting edge piece of kit and you had to take care of it because it was worth hundreds. I`ve bought it because I hate having a mobile phone now so I`m thinking if its a fondly remembered old brick I`m carrying about it might not be so annoying. I think theres something about blokes my age and a slightly worrying obsession with the past. Maybe its the quarter life crisis - if its gonna happen at all it`ll be at the end of your twenties rather than the beginning, I would have thought.
Yeah, I`m all fun`n`games, me.

Hmm yeah i'm not sure exactly what its all about, i'm not so fussed with chasing the past as much anymore, more catching up with the present, and using the past to inspire future projects, IMO if ya still doing ya thing then ya winning. better than 'normal' stuff.

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

Some valid points made here. Bottom line tho is everyone's an individual so different things / eras etc appeal to different people. Personally I think it's an age thing. I was born in 1970 so went into the eighties a wide eyed 10 year old and came out 20. I suppose it was an imprsssionable time and one where I started to be much more aware of everything, clothes, music, cars, bikes etc. Anything to do with the eighties trips a smile with me, maybe it's because i can afford the things I would have glady given an internal organ for back then - be that through me earning a lot more now or that it's just cheaper and tattier. Saw that 80's gangster film 'The Business' last week and by the time it had finsihed I had a Porsche 928 and a lot of 80's sports clothes to add to my never ending list of things i fancy. all stuff which was way, way out of my league then but can now be had. it's living in the past to some people but it puts a smile on my face - now that can't be a bad thing.

Youre right, its a good healthy thing really, Capri makes me feel better every time I look at it, and so does all the other old stuff I`m filling my life up with. Like you say how can that be a bad thing?

as a thought... or some thoughts...
my estelle (s) make me smile every time i look at them. so did my arosa before it went cack.
a new mobile feels cool. comparing my 4/5y.o. one to them and realising mines pretty much as good, in some ways better, makes me smile too.
i love my tatty old clothes i've had since i was like 10. and i love my new clothes, possibly because i buy stuff with such ineffable style its criminal.
i like playing midnight club Dub edtn. also love sitting down to a good game of chess/scrabble whateva.
like stuff that lasts. like old stuff. like new stuff.
is it possible to be a practical retro-er? i wouldnt want 80s food, 60s newspapers or 30s plumbing. would you?
and it isnt shameful to like new things. except the new 08 impreza. its gash.
