Following on from "Modified Vegetables" So it's the time of the year when I go hunting in the local forests for a free fruit..... Yes - Sloes Was a good forage yesterday. Washed and de-stalked Most recipies suggest pricking with a sterile needle but as we haven't had a frost yet this year I created my own frost effect - bag up and stick in the freezer Overnight and we were ready Area prepared 1 x 1L empty Gin bottle & 1 x 70cl of cheap Gin) 1 x 1L empty Vodka bottle & 1 x 70cl of cheap Vodka Spread out Good signs cracked skins so no need to laboroiusly prick each one Get the required qty of sugar ready for each bottle And in Add the Gin and Vodka to the right bottles and then start adding the sloes till the bottles are almost full They go in a cool dry place and all you need to do is give them some aggitation every day for the first week and then every week untill they are ready at xmas So while I write this I've time to try a we drop of last years before I get stuck into the goat curry we are planning on having for tea The recipe for anyone interested is 1L Bottle 70cl of Vodka or Gin 200g Caster or granulated Sugar Sloes to fill the required volume (approx a good mug sized ammount) If you have to many sloes then leave what you don't need frozen in case next year they are hard to find or make more sloe gin or vodka.

Got sloes growing at the bottom of the garden and half a bottle of Gordon's left over from last Christmas so I may give this a blast. (At least I think they are Sloes!).

Any idea when they are ripe? Just had a look at them and they look quite big ( a bit tricky to get at though by the looks of the thorns ).

Any idea when they are ripe? Just had a look at them and they look quite big ( a bit tricky to get at though by the looks of the thorns ). They should be soft but firm (ish) with a slight cloudy haze on the skin - size can vary depending on the year which is another reason why I go for filling bottle after sugar and alchohol - smaller fruit you need more. Ones which are overipe will have no haze on the skin - still usable but will result in more sediment and breakdown, I tend to leave the overipe ones for the birds and just go for the ones that are firm and have a hazy surface..... But I am not an expert just repeat what I do year after year (well except a couple of years ago when there were hardly any to find anywhere - thats when a few frozen from theyear before is very handy) Some recomend more sugar and more sloes but again having tried it for many years I've sort of refined the recipe till it's just right for my tastes Others at RRG12 seemed to like it too - well apart from Michelle (Mrs Blown Imp who refused to try any at all - despite repeated offers only revealing why she had offended me by telling me very quietly that she was pregnant - gave us all another good reason to celebrate) Should look like this

try chucking a couple of almonds in each bottle - it seems to make a positive difference cranberries also work very well as a sloe alternative looks like you need to pick some more sloes though, only two bottles?

My favorite - still think it's the most drinkable neat spirit, can properly glug it down when the need arises.

Not seen any sloes locally to me but we did have a small crop of fruit in our garden this year. In an attempt at preserving, I made
2L of gooseberry gin (no sugar) 1L of raspberry vodka, another of strawberry (both no sugar) 2L rhubarb vodka (which had sugar added to it)
We've not touched the gooseberry or rhubarb, the raspberry and strawberry have almost gone and are rather nice.
We also managed to get seven green chilies off three bushes I planted in the garden. I split these and put them on half a litre of 95% alcohol we brought back from Italy. It's turned a dangerous shade of green and is hot! when I'm ready to brave it, it will be diluted to a litre.

All of those sound nice - made to any specific formulation or just made up as you go along I've been trying to get James's recipe for Lemon Gin for a while as it was mind blowing but all of those sound fun - except the chilli one which frankly sounds downright dangerous!!!

They were guided by rhubarb recipe I used, but I avoided the sugar in the others because I wanted the delicate flavour of the fruit. My mum makes limoncello from the harvest of her trees in Ance. Lovely stuff and I guess making it with gin would be a nice alternative.

Similarly I've just started a batch of Damson Gin and Damson Wine - the benefit of your parents asking 'Do you want any Damsons? I know someone who has a tree with loads on and he doesnt want them'. Later that evening i arrived to a huge bulging carrier bag full.
So, come Christmas, 6 bottles of Damson wine, 1 bottle of Damson gin (and maybe another few bottles since i still have a few in the freezer)...good times!

does the 200g sugar leave it quite sweet? Many recipes put more sugar in.... Downside of adding more is you cant take the sweetness away but if you add less at the start you can add more sweetness later..... To me it's just right and I don't have a sweet tooth but feel free to lower the sugar content and adjust to taste when it's ready. Experimentation is fun

I don`t know why but all the fruit trees round my way have had a bumper harvest except the sloes as there is not one berry on them. I am gutted as I have made some most excellent sloe gin over the past few years. Still got a couple of jars left though. I have some chilli vodka which I am scared to drink although I might get some tomato juice and make a hot Bloody Mary. Also still got a few bottles of various wines from the last couple of years ie, blackberry, raspberry and elderberry to get through. Haven`t done any this year due to projected house move.
