I've always had a classic policies, never had a modern (till 2 months ago, and that car has to be sold, LS400). It's never been a problem, being a named driver on the other half's car has always been OK. Now I'm told by my favourite company that I need to have another car in my name or a policy in my own name. Otherwise I have to insure the old gal below as a modern. And having no NCB that will be relatively pricey. So the question - who else runs classics-only, and who d'you insure with? Cheers

For a Volvo, i suggest trying a company called Peter Best Insurance. It's been a year since i last used them, but see what they can do.

Footman James pulled this stunt on me earlier this year.
"Sorry Sir, we can't insure your classic on its own, you have to have a standard car policy with the classic as the second vehicle." "Okay - can I insure it on a standard policy so I can use it every day?" "Sorry Sir, No. You have to be insuring a classic with us if you want a standard policy."
So the upshot is I have to insure two cars with them or not at all. I chose not at all, as its a cheat's way of doing things that I have no intention of participating in.

I only drive a classic but I insure it on a standard policy with aviva, mostly because at 21 I'm a bit too young for most classic policies and I can't afford to run a second car which many seem to want. Plus the price was pretty good for me, despite being young and a student etc.

Thanks all. I'll give those lot a shout. I guess using a classic as a daily could rightfully draw a higher premium than one that only sees daylight for sunny show days, but I was quoted quite a bit more than I'm paying for the Lexus... so I'm trying to minimise the wallet impact.

i am insured with A Plan on a classic policy with the Sierra as a daily and only car, £550 but then i am only 24 so its not bad, worth givin them a call i used the Thatcham branch as a friend recommended them, they beat my renewal from Classic Line by nearly £300!! www.aplan.co.uk/thatcham

Adrian Flux for me. I've got one Princess on a regular everyday policy and another as a classic/second car. I could just insure one of them but weirdly it's cheaper to have both on a multicar type policy and since that suits my car ownership at present that's what I've gone for.

The T4 Caravelle is insured through Brentacre, it HAS to be modified to count and is about £400 including business use, I have also used them since to insure the TR7 £150 PA with all mods declared on a classic policy but that is SD+P only with 3K miles.

Now sorted, and looking like this -> Peter James, £46 cheaper than Footman James as well. Insured for SDP+commute and being named elsewhere, so that's perfect. I tried them first so can't comment on the others, but all noted for the future. I can cancel my FJ policy (no cost as it's within 14 days cooling off) and sell my Lexus in peace of mind. Thanks for the help everyone, appreciated

Iirc Peter James is the James of Footman James. I was with Aon insurance for years until Footman James took over their classic policies. The prices went up, the staff appeared clueless, then I contacted Peter James. A very refreshing experience and half the price.

Definitely good people to deal with, quicker over the phone than the quote forms too I reckon.

Footman James and Peter James are swings and roundabouts.
I'm with Footman as they're a few quid cheaper than Peter James for me, but vice versa for other folks.
