I hate circumstance the most.
Drive to work this morning in Buick. It starts its "old trick" again. This is the one where it will decline to idle well, and will not pull cleanly at low RPM. It does nothing, stumbles like its going to die and then all of a sudden takes off like an exocet missile....
Not the best for driving in heavy traffic.
And of course the mornig that the car is acting up is the morning that the traffic is the heaviest its been in weeks or months even. Almost Christmas Shopping level traffic.
Every light i come to is red. Every junction I normally just roll up to and out of has at least 6 cars waiting at it, and every amber light I could happily run, theres some old tw@ in front would rather brake for it.
Trying to manouver in the works car park is a nightmare.
Just what you DON'T need is a over sized, over powered, LHD, automatic that runs bad.
And I nearly ran myself over with it at the barrier....
Feckin cars feckin traffic.

I have to get out of the car, walk round, operate barrier, walk back round, get in, drive off.
Walking in front this morning it went for me! Luckily I managed to hold it while I scooched round it to the driver's side... FFS

Are you re-thinking some of your preferences now then? If you had a Donk then you could have driven over all the other traffic, if you had a lowrider you could've driven under the barrier and if you had a VIP'd car you could've parked in the director's space!
;D

Or if I had a 2 year old Focus I could just drive to work warm, unstresseds and not nearly maimed by my own ride.
Theres days I can see some sense in it.

I have to get out of the car, walk round, operate barrier, walk back round, get in, drive off. You need one of those slidey vinyl/leather bench seats, give it a good polish, a good nudge from drivers side and sliiiiiiide- - - -- and you are on the chatterbox/card side. nudge - sliiide back and ya done! ;D

I can;t remember now. The Buick is mixed fabrics, and a Looooong way across.

Thought about reversing through the barrier? A friend of mine used to reverse his old Camper through McD's drive-through all the time. It never stopped being funny.

Yes but the 2 year old Focus could have a "computer says no" moment with its ECU and become completely and utterly immobilised due to a malfunction with a piece of silicon that doesnt even exist on your Buick.

You know, daily commuting is just NOT a leisure activity. Forcing a much loved retro to endure it and thus stressing yourself out is not helping. Much as modern cars do nothing for me at all this is in fact exactly what they are good for. Total reliability in delivering you door to door with zero involvement and stress ) other than traffic.

The problem is that I am expecting a wounded car to do daily service. I know the car is sick, that why it was laid up, but the whole business with the Chrysler meant I had to grab the nearest thing I had to a running car and bosh it back on the road. And then suffer when it does exactly what it does. Which is this. And to be fair its been back on the road 2 maybe 3 weeks and the first time its done it.

I know what you mean - you gotta be pretty hardcore to do an urban commute every day in your retro. I've done it, but it wasn't really an enjoyable experience most of the time. Rather than a new-ish car, I'd be tempted to buy some £200 POS you don't give a flying f*ck about and use it as your assault weapon in the rush hour. Something that runs, stops, goes but has very little else going for it. I chose a Hyundai Pony for this purpose. Treated it like sh*t, thrashed the t*ts off it, never did so much as wipe the bird curse word off it. It was quite liberating really, and made me appreciate my retro so much more.

The couple of occasions I have given in and done that have been the times when I realised i'd gone 2 months without driving a "retro" and everywhere I went was by Rover 416. Then when I went to use oneof my older / modified cars and guess what, as they'd not been run for 2, 3 ,4 weeks they either didn't start or ran bad when they did. The 416 went quickly after that and I commuted a Mk3 Cortina 2.0 Auto about 80 miles a day. Never pproblem with that car until I laid it up. Then the trans started sticking and slipping...

Sounds like a bad morning AK but would you really swap it for being in something bland and "dependable"? I did once for a few months and it nearly drove me nuts. When I had a proper job he commute to work was my largest chunk of mileage. Why would I want to miss out on all the fun that doing it in something old can bring? As you said, old cars need to be used regualrly to be useful tools

The Scirocco has a lumpy cam, runs a bit rich at low revs, and has an unsociably loud exhaust. And stiff springs and poly bushes. So makes a great commuter car - makes every journey an experience I'd probably fall asleep in anything less 'interesting'...

I must apologise, alistairk. I had a snigger at your first posts on this thread! I mean, your own car, going for you like that! Now that IS character! Sounds like a carburettor fault or blockage to me. Probably the idle circuit. Does your old Buick run a carburettor? Or an inlet manifold air leak, possibly an intermittent one - vacuum servo? Don't get mad, mate. Get even! ;D "I'm"
