Well here's another one of my past retros, my third in fact, yet the first one on the road. And the story goes a little something like this... I'd spied an okay looking mk1 Fiesta sitting local to me, and had my eye on it for a fair while. It was one of those cars you know doesn't get used at all, so I thought I'd try my luck and knock at the door. A very friendly gentleman answered the door and was happy to hear me out- he proceeded to show me the car and said he probably would be willing to sell the car, but would have to check with his wife first as it was hers. He also added that the likely sum would probably be around £30. Yes not a typo. £30. After looking at the car and seeing what needing doing I agreed I would definately buy the car from him. What I could see from the quick look round was it needed a new tailgate as it was pretty rotten (holes and everything), and a passenger side mirror glass, other than that just some love. Now she wasn't perfect but she seemed road worthy and had loads of character. A day or two later the man rang me and said his wife said she would sell me the car. For £10. Again, no typo. £10! I said I'd be round next day to collect. And so I did, now I can't remember the exact details of what happened here as it was quite a few years ago, but I seem to remember the car started up straight away, not sure if we jumped it or the battery was charged, possibly I brought a battery off my mk2 from the time thinking about it. Anyways, the bloke opened his garage and said I was welcome to the tailgate freshly sprayed in cordoba beige to match the car (a mk2 tailgate but I wasn't too fussed). Much thanks and off I went, looking forward to passing my driving test the next day. I think I fitted the tailgate as soon as I got home. Passed my driving test the following day and took Fiona (lol) for an MOT straight after, and she went straight through. I could not believe my luck! Everything was going so well. Here she is, not quite in her prime but I loved her to bits, definately my most favourite car ever, and none will ever compare.

So I thoroughly enjoyed driving her about for about six months, got a little annoyed at having to keep setting the points of a winter morning (too lazy to buy some locktite for the screw at the time), but hey thats part of the fun with the older cars. She didn't want for much, just service items, an alternator belt and a starter motor But one fateful night I had to stay at my Dads as we were having a complete new floor fitted throughout our flat. Me and the (now) wife had a little 'tiff' about who got to park on the drive for the night. I got the short straw and out on the road the mk1 went. Next morning I went out to the car to go to work. WTF? DUDE- WHERE'S MY CAR? I was raging- Some little scrote had twoced my car. So I get my dad to come out to drive me round the local hotspots for burnt out cars, but I get told to ring the police first, so I do. Yet while I'm on the phone wandering about out the front of the house on the phone, I keep finding little brown bits of plastic. That would be little brown bits of Fiesta interior. And there's a bumper rubber halfway up the hill, and little itty bits of glass everywhere, so I'm like what the curse word have they done to my poor little car? And the lady on the phone starts to tell me my car has been involved in an 'incident' and removed, she couldn't tell me anymore but said there were some officers on route. SO what had happened was some little curse word on his 18th birthday got absolutely mullered on about three bottles of wine plus pills and whatever else he and his uncle thought was a good idea for the night, went back to the uncles where the kid got into said uncles brand new merc (CLK I think it was)to listen to the radio, but decided to take it out for a drive. End result being this (apologies for the poor quality of the photos of photos).

Scary! So that happened outside the house, but you didn't hear it? It must have sounded like a bomber had just pulled the trigger...

In my defence - my bedroom was right at the back of the house, but we had dogs that would normally go absolutely mental should a fox fart within a mile yet through all that - nothing! The next door neighbours (students - short term rent) witnessed it all but didn't know the car was from ours and so they called police fire and ambulance assuming that the car was driving and had been hit. It took about 5 years for me to receive a payout to top it all off too.

Oh man that looks like a hell of a crash. I had a '82 Fiesta as my first car with a really similar number plate -HFO 17X- but only a 1.1L (until I raided the scrappy for a Ghia interior haha!)and loved it to bits so I can imagine that was a bit of a blow.
But 5 years for a payout?!?!? Thats curse word.

I managed to get the address. But I thought I'd best not. I'm hoping the inebriated driver walked away with a very bad limp, as a bare minimum... You would have hoped, yet he escaped unscathed. He actually managed to drive the merc off! Not far - just to the top of the hill but still. The merc was actually intact, apart from a snapped leg and probably wishbone, the wheel was broken and half hanging off and the damage to the bumper and wing - but if you saw the two cars together you would never have put them as part of the same crash. Just goes to show well made cars are nowadays compared to then, scary really.

I hope your sister wasn't in the car when it happened though mate.

Thats not going to polish out Any idea how fast the merc was going when they hit it? Does make you think mind what's going to happen to your 30 year old car when you get hit by a lot more modern car.

I have no idea to be honest, It may be in the folder with the statement he made, it does make for good reading, iirc I think he may have said 70 but I don't know tbh. Fast for sure! Bean can and tin opener respectively.
