Hi all. Well as the title suggest, we here at VWH have managed to acquire an interesting car that we are about to embark on a project with. We are trying somethig a little different with this project by leaving a lot of the choices to the members of various forums. We've already sourced oursleves a crash damaged Audi S3 to transfer the engine into the Jetta. This will be done using the complete o.e ecu and wiring loom to retain the reliability. We're really undecided on the colour, what suggestions do you guys have? Anyway, here's a few pictures of the 'hearing aid beige' polish beast. And a pic of our donor S3

We know that putting 20vt in the car is perhaps a little predictable, however we will be using the car to travel to various shows in europe and reliability is a must for us. The idea of something like a 16v on carbs is great, but trying to drive it at various altitudes through europe may cause a few frustrating issues. We have thought about perhaps adding a little more power from a turbo upgrade (the engine will be getting a forged rebuild, so no issue with it coping with the added power.), top mounting a larger turbo seems appealing, and should compliment the smoothed bay, wiring tuck and hidden pipework. We've had a couple of thoughts on colours, by no means a shortlist, just a couple of ideas. Velvet green. Pearl white. Panama brown. Mexico beige. Fontana gray. Savannah beige.

I like the jetta. Nice colour good start of a project.
The idea of a 20v however makes me feel very sad inside.

Nice project, bookmarked it! I have always wanted to build a mk2 coupe with RHD swap, but they are now too rare (expensive) and no room to do it lol. As for colour I like the Green & Brown used on the T5's with a contrasting all tweed interior

oooh nice and looks an interesting project
whats predictable about using a tried and tested method to get power and reliability into an old vehicle, seems common sense to me
and what a sleeper, for gods sake though keep it HAB!!!!!!!! (hearing aid beige)
good luck guys

I must be missing something here...?! I don't know why this is getting some thumbs pointing downwards...?!?!?! I have no idea either. Matte black paint with a roof rack and weedy engine I've seen plenty of but a 20vt beige missile gets my vote every time Looking forward to seeing how this one turns out. Keep up the good work!

If your going to do a lot of traveling stay with the 225 bhp
Don't see the point of going the full on big turbo in such a small light car get the turbo to come in progresive and early Light nimble quick it'll still pull 130 140 with the 02j or 02s ( 6 speed ) unless your going with the 4x4 haldex rear end and 02m ....

I had a 225 BAM engine in a Leon Cupra R, it was stage 2 mapped, with most of the supporting mods, estimated 270bhp. I found it incredibly economical! I saw 45mpg+ on steady motorway commutes. I presume from the S3 it's already decided, but I also think a tidy 1.9tdi install would have suited this well, considering the requirements

Well, seeing as the smooth bay, wiring tuck and hidden pipework will add nothing to the reliability I suspect this project is more about building a cool Jetta that will get some attention at VW/young-timer shows. Or were they not reliable enough for VW owners all over Europe (at whatever altitude) in the '70s and '80s? Colour looks great as it is! I'd leave it as part of that cars heritage.

Thanks for comments and the suggestions on the T5 colours, we hadn't considered those! We will be using an 02j box, so yes too much power could be a little pointless but certainly entertaining. I've personally completed around 50 1.8t transplants into older vw's, so I have ironed all the inherant problems out with hidden looms and pipework. In my opinion there's nothing worse than a messy engine bay. Having worked on some peoples home conversions in my previous job, you would not believe some of the things people do, this has driven my obsession for neat conversions. Yep, the original 1.3 4speed setup was probably pretty reliable, however, 32 years later and a hard Polish life has left the little 1300 a little tired. A Diesel certainly was a consideration, but with the donor S3 coming up for a bargain price, it seems like the ideal choice. What colour scheme do you guys think the engine and ancillaries should be painted in? Here's a pic of a previous engine i've built recently for reference.

Retro Pearl white with a brick red interior and 8 track stereo, 13 inch rims, black with polished lips/edges, slammed on air ride. Maybe mess with rear lights (series one golf?), and fit mk1 golf front grill with spots and chrome bumpers.

Cool the o2j is a good box did you know that you can change the gearbox selector from a mk2 golf 16v gearbox as long as you use the cup at the bottom of the box to match . You can also use the 16v cups for the cvs just cut um down and drill the center bolt hole then they bolt to the o2j . . Then you can use mk2 Rocco shafts ..
