A mate has just bought himself a new car. See pics. He's already fed up with the Essex bird jokes but he likes the old cabby. Actually its not in bad nick, has like 70K from new on it and no rot. Its a 1.6i However We have an odd switch which we don't understand. Its obviously a factory switch, and its got a "fan" logo on it. and when you flick it deep in the bowels you can hear a fan come on. It appears to be a 2 speed fan switch too. Its not for the heater. Thats a rotary control on the other side of the dash. Surely it can't be a manual switch for an electric engine cooling fan? Here it is.... Anyone know (Street, I'm looking in your dead 80s direction...)

1. Nice car, looks in original nick, which is nicely refreshing.
2. An 80's ford switch that works?! z0mg!

Anyone know (Street, I'm looking in your dead 80s direction...) Heheh! That switch is from the very first base models, with a certain type of dash that i've only seen once. The base model varient in question had a wierd dash with no central blower vents and instead of the usual heater controls it just had that switch, so you only got 2 speeds instead of the comparitive luxury of 3 in the rest of the range. I too have one of those switches in mine from when I happened upon the obscure dash'ed model in the scrapyard a few years ago. That looks a really nice example from the pics, rare to see the bumpers still straight and it makes all the difference to the look of the car when they are. Nice colour too!

My guess is someones just boshed it in there, it's no optional extra i've heard of..... Maybe a manual override switch for the cooling fan?

Hold on.... Just had another look and that dash isn't the right one for that car- It should have the softer padded type dash which were fitted to the XR3i models aswell as the RS range and Ghia, but that is the hard plastic type that's fitted to the Base, L and GL models. The hard plastic type is slightly different in design too. That's a bit odd......

Hmmm.... odd. That dash is exactly how I remember them from my Mk3 borrowing days when they were new, they would have bben vans and a 1.6 GL estate though.

I've just done a double-take, it's an escort cab without any damage to the steering lock housing! Hehe chances are it's an override for the radiator fan, and they've cunningly used the povo-spec fan switch instead of a generic toggle bolted through the dash. Switch it on then crawl around the car hunting the noise. It's not been previously owned by a 'yoof' who has filled the boot with 'wicked amps and subs' has it? They sometimes put fans in there to cool all that. As for the dash... does it matter that the first Mk3 Cabs weren't XR models, or even Ghia, they were just badged as 1600i or 1.6i weren't they? If the special dash was in the upper-range models the Cab might have missed out until it was rebadged as the XR3i Cabrio.

Rear screen demister fan? Not sure what car I've seen that on before, but was a retro cabrio of some sort.. Switch it on & hunt around for the noise..
Clean example btw, nice one!

They are very rare as most were ordered as the common 1.6i
