That certainly changes the circumstances. Should have run the number before really! Disc in the widnow needs to be updated. I bet a traveller scrap collector wouldn;t check, just spot the disc was out and have it away.

Could be a police trap, these used to be very common in the late 90's. As soon as someone starts tinkering with the car WHAM, 10 police officers spring into action emerging from a load of screeching cop cars.

If the car is untaxed and abandonned then the council wil lhave it away for scrap. In that case its fair game to try and cut in on the sytem and get it before it gets a CDO. The registered owner gets contacted by the DVLA when you apply for the V5C for it. Unfortunately this is the only way to contact the owner about their vehicle. If the vehicle is still taxed theres a fair chance someone still wants it. If its apparently fair game for travellers to go rund picking up untaxed cars and weighing them in then this car could well get weighed in, and in that case the DVLA doesn't write to the owner to ask before issuing a doc or anything...

failure to display is a separate offence.
Sounds a bit bizarre to be a sting op.
You could even go ask at the local cop shop as theres one very close by.

Got a reply back from Notts Council, there being arsey and say they don't want me to pick it up???
Damn shame really, if it was in sunny Burton the Council would of been well happy to save some cash... Ho Hum...
Looks like its staying there till someone weighs it in or breaks it!

I suspected that would be the case even if it were untaxed they have a contract with someone who picks them up, they get a CDO and the V5 withdrawn and then they get crushed. No messing and it s all "official".
Your only way to save an abandonned vehicle is to ascertain that it is abandonned (often requires a bit of door to door work in the area etc.) and apply for a V5C - see if the previous owner objects.... If you know a copper who's prepared to break the law he can PNC it and you can get the owners' details that way and make an approach saying "you wanna sell that?" but these days people are really jumpy about the details being misused this way so very unlikely to get done unless the copper owes you big style.... You may also get a great big earful off the owner "how did you get my details" if they know thier rights, and more people do these days.
DVLA aught to have an enquiry thing that you can pass your details on to the current owner. They used to do that in years gone by but don;t now. Or something.

I think you need good reason to find out a cars details. If you used to own the car years ago and want to buy it back is a good enough reason- or used to be.
Id ask down the local cop shop and see what they have to say on the matter. It would be great if this tina estate was saved.

I thought the law demanded that a car has a tax disc displayed, not just that the car has been taxed. tis true, but it only has to A tax disc displayed. doesn't have to current, as long as the vehicle is itself currently taxed. AFAIK.

Wierd. Obv someone is coming back for it.... but leaving it there is asking for trouble.
There's a 24v Mongdeo down my road that hasn't moved from it's secluded spot in a fortnight. I assumed it was dumped, but it still has rent in the window, and the mirror that has been hanging off since last friday night had today been re-attached. I'm amazed the travellers haven't had it away already.

Mongdeo? travellers obviously still have some standards I thought the law demanded that a car has a tax disc displayed, not just that the car has been taxed. tis true, but it only has to A tax disc displayed. doesn't have to current, as long as the vehicle is itself currently taxed. AFAIK. The law is failure to display a valid vehicle excise licence. Even if you buy one online on the day the old one ran out, until it arrives in the post you shouldn't drive the car. It is though a seperate offence to not having a valid tax disc and has a lesser penalty. It's pretty dumb, since it's all computerised and it takes about a minute for a policeman to radio through and see if your car is taxed, the whole small-bit-of-paper system is fairly outdated.

You can have your car towed away and crushed for not being taxed, even if its tax exempt! Never understood that one either.

tax disc indicates there is insurance on the car, not all insurers are on the database yet, so the ol bill cant get a definitive answer over the radio i don't think, be better in my opinion to just have the tax on petrol/diesel and have an insurance disc in the window but what the hell do i know? lol
