Neither my friend nor I am doing anything about this. If anyone wants to see if they can find out what the story is with this abandonned Cortina and maybe save it, then feel free. The unit over the road with the KG at it would be my first place to ask... Here's the pics I'll confirm location and if anyone wants to know PM me.

I used to work round the corner from there, Ian Nuttals on palm st. Looks a very tidy one, such a shame! Hope it doesn't fall into the wrong hands....

i tried to rescue a morris oxford from some garages that were being demolished many years ago, its VERY difficult as the police want you to contact the previous owner before they will let you do anything.
I would suggest reporting it to the council which will at least get it taken away somewhere safe while THEY try to contact the previous owner, let them know you would be interested in saving it and keep pestering them about it, but you may find that legally they HAVE to crush it.
If you move it you could be up on car theft charges unfortunately.

in case anyone missed the previous thread....
This car has been sitting there with an expired tax disc and a tow rope under the front of it on a public street for about 4 weeks to my knowledge.
I suspect it will either be towed away and crusghed for no tax or local yobs will vandalise it / torch it.
If anyone wants to see if a happier end can be arranged...

If you move it you could be up on car theft charges unfortunately. It's better that the council have it and crush it than you end up in court for stealing something nobody cared about until they changed their minds (i.e. when the police ring them up!). I'm not a lawyer (thank god!) but I'm fairly sure the car is the property of the owner/keeper until the council have placed a notice on it, and after any council notice period is served, it becomes either the property of the council or the registered removal agent. Some councils let people have cars, some send them to scrapyards/breakers who sell them complete or allow them to be broken up for parts, and some require them destroyed/crushed. Most areas I've lived it send them to car breakers, who allow them to be broken up for parts but not to be sold complete or put back on the road. It's an area where one council's policy can be very different to another.

I believe they are supposed to all get a CDO now.
Its easier when the car is on private land or the owner owes rent...
I would make enquiries it could belong to a local garage or something. As said, the one with the orange KG would be #1 for me.
Thing is if I applied for a V5C when I first heard about it then I'd have it registered in my name by now...

To me it looks like its been rolled down the hill to the left of it, maybe in an attempt to bump start it or something before attempting to attatch the tow rope which was given up on for some reason. It's just odd that it's facing the wrong way on the street like that. But then of course I may have just watched too much Columbo

I'm not a lawyer (thank god!) but I'm fairly sure the car is the property of the owner/keeper until the council have placed a notice on it, and after any council notice period is served, it becomes either the property of the council or the registered removal agent. In order to be convicted of stealing the car, you would have to be shown to have "mens rea" - in other words, a guilty mind, or guilty intent. If you were to write to the DVLA before collecting the car, telling them that you have taken the car for safe keeping and would be happy to return it to the owner for free and ask them to contact the owner so that he can get the car back, you should be free and clear. Send it by registered post and keep a copy of the letter. Of course if the police come upon you while you are removing it, its possible that they will charge you with stealing it, just because they would rather prosecute an ordinary, law-abiding bloke because it's so much easier than dealing with real criminals. That said, you could probably represent yourself as long as you have behaved honestly. Be sure to inform the Daily Mail of course so that they could publish a lengthy diatribe about how the police and the prosecutors are soft on crime but like to harass harmless English eccentrics.

I bet that if someone did start to remove that poor old cortina the owner would suddenly appear from a nearby house!
Does anyone have a place to store it? Is it unlocked? Ill fly down with a tow rope, its not too far.

I think Alistair mentioned on the previous thread it was locked (dodgy geezer must have been trying door handles all down the street!).... although as was also mentioned, getting into a locked car of that age usually just involves a similar sized key or two, the locks will be worn and there were only a few thousand combinations to start with. And I think he said they didn't have steering column locks anyway so only the doorlock to 'beat'.
Even into the 90's, VW keys quite often opened other VWs - my ex's polo key would open, but not start my G40.

My mate hasn't tried the doors. So it may not be locked. You can open a Cortina with a padlock key or anything though. And no steering lock on a Mk2 IIRC.
