[ Stick to the recommended towing limits and forget what you car can "legally" tow. I won't mention the time I towed a three ton boat on an unbraked trailer with a car that weighed 1450KG. (Although it was under police escort and not something I would undertake under normal driving conditions) It was all fine until I needed to slow down |

I towed a range Rover with another Range Rover and it got a bit out of hand once, it's easily done.

The only downside to towing with a commercial is that more and more campsite's are not allowing commercial vehicles onsite. I presume this is to stop the travellers moving in! I have a slightly heavier twin wheel caravan and used to tow it with my old V70 T5 which would legally tow 1900kgs, but TBH it wasnt very nice with it on the back so I now use a 4x4 and you don't even know its there! So although an old Volvo would pull it within the law, its not ideal. I don't think a van would be pratical and the 4*4 generally only do that mpg with towing lol. |

My old man had a 760 V6 years ago and it made a great tow vehicle. Dunno how much his caravan weighed but it was a reasonable size, and he said it towed it with ease.

BMW E38 4.4 Auto - tows up to 2100 kgs (car 1200 Kgs, Trailer 800 kgs) and coming back from RRG2012 averaged 27 mpg towing and it's insured on classic insurance
