I've got a Volvo 760 with the D24Tic engine (2.4 6-cyl IDI turbo diesel) running more boost (16psi - standard T3) and more fuel.
The exhaust rotted away and has broken at the first joint, so now is the time to fit something proper.
I was thinking 2.5" stainless from turbo back, then one cherry bomb silencer (3" width/18" long) at the rear. My mate runs a garage and says he can build the exhaust if I buy all the bits.
Does 2.5" sound about right for the spec? Think standard is 2". Want something that sounds nice, but not "too" loud and want something that helps the turbo spool a bit quicker.
What wall thickness should I go for? 1.5mm/2mm? It will be T304 stainless. And, does anyone know anywhere in the West Midlands I can get a few mtrs for a good price? I was going to go to MIJ exhausts which is about £14/mtr for T304 2.5", but after I did a search and found lots of problems with their "stainless" pipework rusting I'm a bit put off...

2.5" size is fine the whole way through - no need for the 3" backbox (unless you're getting it cheap of course!) don't forget, you don't need the CAT either, so that can be weighed in if you've still got it

Actually slight change of plan - for the sake of being cheaper and quicker, I'm keeping the original downpipe from turbo - which is 2.25". I'll change that to 2.5/3" if/when I stick a different turbo on! So just going 2.5" from downpipe, all the way to the rear, where I'll have the one cherry bomb and tailpipe. Just to clear up - the cherry bomb is 2.5" input/output, but the physical can size is 3" wide. I got it wrong though, it's 12" length not 18" - will that be ok? www.ebay.co.uk/itm/160542830387?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2649Oh, and for some reason my Volvo had no Cat or EGR from factory.

as chairchild says, you *may* find it too quiet with the backbox, so a bit of experimentation may be in order

Not unless you want it to sound like a skeleton having a rodpull in the cupboard. I'd go bigger than the box on ebay personally.

Well, one says no silencer, one says bigger silencer, so I'm in the middle - which is kind of what I wanted - not too loud, but with a nice growl! The silencer will be at the end so even if it's too small, it wouldn't be the end of the world to swap it out.

The turbo takes out a lot of the noise of the combustion, a LOT When the rear section fell off my lucida TD i didn't even notice, which was a PITA cos when i spent £200 replacing it it made it no quieter at all, i should of just put a side exit on the broken end and left it, the box that did stay on was smaller than that ebay one but wasn't a straight through like the cherry bomb which to be honist is more like a straight tube with a bulge on it LoL

I actually meant, don't bother with a 3" backbox, as a 2.5" is usually quite a bit cheaper  I've used a midbox off a citroen XM as a backbox before, sounded quite nice. Straight-through as standard too.
A derv with no backbox sounds nasty...

Right ok! Well, I picked up 3m of 2.5 stainless tube, and a Jetex 2.5" stainless over axle bend the weekend.
Just need to order the silencer and possibly a tail piece. Do you think a 12" long 2.5" cherry bomb will sound ok - not "too" loud, or nasty like it has no backbox?

I'd look up what the non turbo variants used, i know on a 405 they used the same bore pipe but no centre silencer, as they had a resonator on the manifold instead, the turbo had centrebox and a large rear box! Mum's 405 TD now runs turbo rear box only You could go all scientific and work out gas speeds and where to taper the exhaus from turbo elbow at say 2.5" down to 2" at the rear, i know a 170 bhp pug petrol runs exactly that, revs to 7450 (peak at 6500) and the 200 bhp 200 lbft 6000 rpm 3.0 v6 is 2.75 tapering to 2".
