Well, someone has to be blamed, and he was not the sole accused in my head, but his build did have me sneaking in daily to look. There have been others as well, and they are as culpable as Bruce.... Just been loooking at Autotrader, and saw MX5's from £550 and less than 100 miles from home. So I was wondering, just how cheap can one pick them up for? I am talking MOT-able or with tax and MOT. Have they hit rock bottom on price yet? My thinking would be a cheap purchase, some attention to it, keeping it in the "daily driver" category and getting noticed out on the road. I am thinking things like Jaegermeister orange, or Mello Yello or even an oldie like Gulf Racing, or some other interesting commercial brand, like Orangina. Unfortunately been done, so probably not worth copying, as nice as it is. Orangina.... Is this Paul Smith ? There are also a load of Nascar themed combos.

sub £500 will probably need sills and arches welding £500 - £1000 will be a good usable car with some minor problems and £1000 plus will get you a decent car thats been looked after. if you wait till winter prices drop but with the weather as its been recently prices are up at the moment.

Good advice. I'm thinking of sacking the BX off when I come back off my jollies at the end of September and buying one. I would imagine it's the last thing suited to a 19-stone 49 year-old man doing a 40 mile a day winter motorway commute. Even more reason for buying one.

sub £500 will probably need sills and arches welding Probably but not always. My first MX5 cost me £375 and needed a wheel bearing and rear shock absorbers for the MOT, nothing more. The ends of the sills had already been plated and were solid, but they were typical MOT spec plates (i.e. welded onto the surface, not 'let in', so BiAS kindly chopped them back and welded the sills up really nicely. That car is still going strong today and had proven to be a real run bit of kit. My second MX5 cost me the grand sum of £400 and went straight through the MOT with no work needed and no advisories. Not a single spot of rust anywhere on the car. One of the straightest and most solid MX5's I've ever seen. Plus it was a V-spec with near mint tan leather interior and a few other nice toys. I sold a few of the bits off and it stood me in around £250 by the time I'd sold them (things like the spare tonneau, fog lights which I didn't want etc..) Obviously a lot of you know that the second car went through some extensive mods after that, but even as a straight, standard car (for *way* less than £500) it was a lovely thing to drive. Don't get wrapped up in thinking you have to spend over £1,000 for a tidy example, there are plenty of cars out there and it's a buyers market. Be prepared to travel (400 mile round trip to buy my second one) and keep an eye out for one that's got some nice bits on it (decent seats, nice wheels, no rust, good hood etc...) and you won't regret it. If I was to buy one again I'd be setting a budget of about £500 and would just play the waiting game for the right one to come along. I'd certainly not even consider spending near £1,000 and I know first hand that good examples are out there for not a lot of money.

Two seaters seem to have fallen across the board, MGF's are being given away too.

The problem with wiating until the winter to buy one is the amount on the market is also reduced. That said, I've brought both mine in winter and there is nothing more fun than on a dry winters day blasting past other commuters with the lid down As to has the market bottomed out, I reckon so. They can't get much lower.

This: Was 450 quid, 210k miles, and needed an alternator, battery and alloys. Surface corrosion abound and will need a few other bits to make nice, but its really only got a service as i only want it for its guts (Caterham kit donor) I would happily swap this for a grotten mk1 with a good engine with the above issues in mind if someone preferred a mk2...

One of the things MM repeatedly says is to look beyond your doorstep.
I AGREE TOTALLY.
I Am always prepared to travel and include the cost of fetching an item 150 miles away in my cost/value calculation.
When we bought the truck recently We were looking accross the USA in mainly dry states, then one appeared in Ebay motors less than 50 miles away and once checked out, we bought it.
Likewise a train trip to Manchester, Edinburgh, Southampton would not stop me.
I used to be shocked at people saying 30,40,100 miles being too far to go to fetch a bargain or even free item.
Still, it allows guys like MM and I to cherry pick a bargain or two.
The other trick is to ask around. Someone often knows someone who knows something.

i got mine on the road on tuesday and i loooove it! paid 375, spent a weekend welding doing MOT spec patches. 88k on the clock (tjink its in km though as its an early uk model and the speedos still in km/h) runs and drives like a dream - fitted racelands and its low with plenty of room to go down further goes sideways without a clutch kick in the dry and stays there - love it

Maybe yours were poor examples but mine stuck to the road like glue and were immense fun.

LOOKS LIKE WE ARE DIGGING AROUND ON EBAY ETC.....
Next question is: yearly road tax on a 1600 mk1
Where do you get decent insurance rates?
Just got £470 per year from a comparison site.

Rian, in all honesty, you will not get a decent rate from one of the sites. I can really recommend Brentacre. I got a quote from them on ben711200's reccomendation. Not only were they significantly cheaper (By over £60!), the quality of service is just excellent. Also, on my policy, ALL cosmetic mods are included in that price, including lowering the car as well! These are also on my list and I reckon you and Nicola will love one! Rysz.

The 1600 is over 1549 so is higher tax band (£225ish a year?) Most insurers are happy to treat MX5s as classics so go with all the usual brokers to see what they can offer and I'd be very surprised if the MX5OC didn't have a competitive insurance scheme. EDIT: Yes, Brentacre is definitely my favourite. The personal level of customer service and the 'can do' attitude is brilliant. They weren't that competitive for me for a couple years but have come up trumps this year for me. I couldn't recommend them enough, though (putting this as politely as possible ) we're at different points in our lives so someone I find competitive may be awful for you
