Technically we are supposed to have a front plate in California, also all plates are made at Folsom Prison to order. So there is none of this 'italic or creative spacing' issues and systems to pay tolls based on your plate are much easier.
We also have the ability to choose (almost) any combination of letters and numbers for plates (7 characters max), plus a number of special symbols (heart, + sign, star (*) and a hand) to make really silly plates, my Duc's plate is 'AYUP DUC', which nobody ever gets.....
When you buy a (new) car you get a 'paper plate' which is simply a photocopy of the licence plate application and it is stuck in the windscreen of the car.
Your plates arrive after about 6-8 weeks !

This plate has small stickers on them - a month and a year - this is your vehicle registration sticker, or tags, every year you pay to re-licence your car based on its standard DMV value. The Mini costs $350 each year which includes a fee for having a 'vanity' plate.
If you get 'caught' without a front plate, you will get a 'fix-it' which is a no-fine, prove you have got it fixed within 30 days thing - failure to fix it gets you into all sorts of hassle.
