MX5 1.8 lump? 140bhp v tuneable and cheap Still considerably more than a zeyec, less tunable and with less aftermarket. Zetecs are great, arguably better than duratecs (certainly a lot cheaper and more durable). Ive just finished putting one in a quite modded minor, its a 1.8 escort gti motor (has the 2l cams) on bike carbs and megajolt, and its a lot quicker, lighter and more economical than the quite modded 2l pinto it replaced.

The MX5 idea had crossed my mind but I'm going to keep it as Ford as I can. Not out of some kind of Ford is best idea - my daily drive is a Mitsubishi.. - but because the Escort is being built to be as reliable and easy to get bits for as possible.
Using a Ford engine and box makes life easier putting it together. As there's a chance I'll be moving to Europe in the next year or so I may go as far as fitting a cat along with the injection system. It'll take a bit of fiddling but It's nothing that hasn't been done before.. For the sake of reliability and being able to drive anywhere in Germany it'd be worth it.

What are the rules on bringing a modded car into Germany? I know their laws are pretty tough with mods.

Not 100% on the exact rules but Germany has rules about emissions in certain cities. You need an emissions sticker for areas which isn't expensive but if you don't have it you're not meant to go there. They fine you if they catch you.
The car will be UK registered as it will be here for at least a few months a year, which makes modifying it easier than it would be in Czech, for example.
I believe the system in Germany means mods have to be TUV tested and you pay extra for mods tested. Using mainly standard Ford bits should make that easier if I end up living there.
I'll try and find out more.
