Those seats are awesome. Really looking forward to seeing how this turns out. Will it be as low as the splitty? Always liked these since seeing one in Hossegoer in the early 90's when I was down there on a surf trip, Slammed with alloys and in battleship grey looked awsum ! Make a nice camper to and those back doors are RaD ! Hi I was going to put some comfortable seat in, but as soon as I saw the Spartan originals fitted in the van I fell in love with them. Re the stance of the van. It will be slammed possibly with American racing torq thrust II’s or banded originals. It won’t be as low as my splitty. (But I may have to tub the front to get it lower)(I also have a full air bag system lying around… Who knows) as I said earlier this will be my every day transport and as such needs to be usable in every situation and return a reasonable MPG. There for I'm abandoning the V8 route (a first for me) and using a 1.9 TDI motor from ether the Audi A4 or VW passat. The colour will be staying silver with the worst of the dents being removed, painted and aged. My idea with this vehicle is to make the out side look a little faded and old. But the interior will be as luxurious as I can afford….. Yes those back doors are pretty special, one of my favourite parts of the van. Dave

I wouldnt get rid of any of the dents, just leave it as it is as much as possible. Its got a beatiful natural patina to it, and it would be a massive shame to lose it in favour of 'fake' patina. Plans sound great though, really looking forward to it

Unfortunately the photos don’t show some of the horrendous panel damage. The roof is so bad that its scrap. I’m going to have to make a new one. Although I love the patina look and will be keeping most of it. There is a fine line between cool patina and traveller wagon. Can’t have customers, family and friends running for there lives every time I pull up outside there houses cuz they think the undesirables have landed. Dave………………

I'm glad you're keeping the aged look of it, I really like the way the panels are darker along each seam. Reminds me of ...

One week on from collecting the van and its MOT time. It’s been a funny few day’s kind of calm and tranquil. As any of you who have worked on old cars will know, they tend to fight back and occasionally bite you. Leaving you with cuts bruises and chunks missing from your hands. In my case, usually from other parts of my body as well. With this one…Nothing… not a scratch… Even the drive to the MOT station was eventless. Apart from the reaction from the general public. I’ve got use to people looking, smiling even waving as I go by in the splitty. But the look of open mouthed disbelief on nearly every persons face as I rattled past was amusing. It carried on at the MOT station. A chap, who saw me drive past, went home and got his French Velosolex bike out to show me. Even offered to sell it to me…. curse word ! ! ! Well the van passed with flying colours without a single advisory. Not bad, when a week earlier I was told/mocked by the garage I picked it up from that it was going to rape my wallet and spare time. (To be honest when they found out I was a mechanic too, they really ripped the *iss) I suppose is did use up my time, approx. 80 hours. But rape my wallet boys……You DON’T know me. Final cost… £24.96 for 2 steering rack boots and a door mirror……… Now waiting for the DVLA to send me the registration pack… Then the REAL fun starts……… Dave…

Love the look of these, think they are a great alternative to the VW bus, they don't seem to have the same following.....yet!

Love the look of these, think they are a great alternative to the VW bus, they don't seem to have the same following.....yet! I have 2 mates who are heavily into there split screen bus’s (One a prolific poster on vw forums) who are now getting HY vans and a few others who are looking. These vans are defiantly on there way to cult status. Prices are climbing rapidly.

Excellent! I love the look of these things though by all accounts they are pretty dreadful to drive. If I lived in France I'd have one as a daily for sure, regardless of the misery actually piloting one on a regular basis would bring.
Shift pattern appears to be the same as a Traction - looks bizarre written down on the plate but actually makes a lot of sense when you use it (like all Citroen gearboxes, actually). Just remember to shift slowly!
Look forward to seeing this one progress

Love these old trucks, I had a long long brainstorming session a few months ago about ideas for these with a very well known hotrodder, the best option for a power upgrade we could come up without a tape measure was an Audi V8 or v6, it looked like you could have the driveshafts adapted or remade to suit. On another point, Many years ago, I rebuilt the brakes on a Mk2 Zodiac, I used WD40 to assemble them as I had no other lube at the time, as the car was not ready for its brakes, I put them away, 3 months later I went to fit them and all the seals had blown/gone soft because of the wd40, !!!!

Not a huge amount to show for 2 weeks worth of spare time. The oak former I had machined has been brilliant. With many of the dents ive gently taped back into place using it, needing no or very little paint prep. Early this week I decided to tackle the roof panel. I posted earlier that this was so badly damaged, it needed replacing. Well I decided to have a go at repairing it. The oak former being completely useless for this as it is flat and the roof is curved. So I came up with another solution. Again, gently tapping the roof back into shape around the tube. Not perfect but better than a huge speed hump in the middle of the roof. As I work on my own ive had to make up various stands to hold the tube in place. (That’s the problem with being Billy no mates ha ha ha )Next problem was the panel oil canning when the support was removed. Now I must admit ive tried heat shrinking before. My first attempt was 100% successful. My 2nd and 3rd being a total disaster, so much so I pretty much destroyed the panels I was working on. So after watching countless Utube videos (Disregarding the MANY fake and false offerings) I set about my roof panel………… so far, success… But I have several more speed bumps to tackle. Fingers and legs crossed.. Would really like to get stuck in to the serious modifications. But need to finish a customer’s hotrod build first. (To free up the space) Probably about 6 weeks away from sending it to paint. Will then be a mad rush to get new engine, box and disc brakes fitted to the citroen, before it returns for final assembly…….

HOW HAVE I NOT SEEN THIS?!
I'm a massive fan of these and being a 2cv nut see them fairly regularly at various shows. I've mentioned my want for one many times only to be told that they are massively slow and the back end has a tendency to be quite skittish when up to speed(so beware!) but as i've never driven one i couldnt tell you how true this is.
My godfather owns a split screen Perkins Diesel H-van, needed a lot of work but did run when he picked it up (i did get the pleasure of starting it up) but has been sat for around 10 years in a unit not having a lot of work done :/
One thing i will say, if you plan on getting any parts from across the channel, beware of a guy called Jeff/Geoff Winterman, used to opperate over here and appears to have anything you need but is dodgy(ran off with my godfather's money)
Deffo Bookmarked!!

Thanks for the warning.. Although the only parts I may have to source from these suppliers are body and glass rubbers. And I have my own contacts for those, that I will try first. As for handling that’s quite an easy fix having modified several old vehicles in the past with great success.. (Fingers crossed and a loud prayer when entering corners at speed. ha ha ha ) Get on to your god farther regarding his HY van. You must have it……These vehicle are gaining cult status . Check the steep climb in prices on e-bay of late.. mark my words they WILL be the new vw split screen bus.. lol
