Yes, no MOT does not mean no insurance, your car will still be insured whilst in your garage, but if you fail to comply with the Road Traffic Acts, then the public liability part of using a car on the road is invalid. The Traffic Acts allow you to use a car for a reasonable distance to and from an MOT station for the purpose of testing it, not sure how overnight from France is a "reasonable distance". And I'm pretty sure that the "tariff" for no insurance is a at least a 6 month ban. And finally, can you afford the lawyers to win this augment? Not with me, I've learnt my lesson , but with the Magistrate. The minimum Legal Requirement to drive a vehicle on the public highway is Third-Party. Regardless of your type of cover (Fully Comp/TPF&T/TP), you would still have a minimum cover of Third Party if you do not have an MOT, to protect other drivers in the event of an accident. There would be no obligation for the Insurer to cover YOU in the event of you driving a vehicle outside of the Policy requirement. Exactly the same as if you had undeclared modifications, you won't be covered, anyone you might hit will be. No insurance carries between 6-8 points. No ban, unless you happen to have enough points on your license already. I've been done twice for no Insurance, never lost my license, got 6 points the first time, 8 the second, so I speak from personal experience. If your still in any doubt, here's a list of endorsable offenses and their points values, from the Goverment itself. www.gov.uk/penalty-points-endorsements/endorsement-codes-and-penalty-points

Hi all,
In case anyone is interested the car has made it to Berlin so far (where I'm flat sitting for a couple of weeks). Ran like a dream (on 60-40 diesel-veg oil) on the way over, apart from a mysteriously high tickover. Will be heading into Poland next.....

That's a good question. I keep forgetting to check but will have a look on Monday (supermarkets are closed here on Sundays).
I put 70L of Tesco £1 a litre stuff in the boot before I left anyway. I know there's a weight penalty but I'm looking at the price of diesel in Norway and it's an eye-watering E1.80 a litre, so I think the maths makes sense based on that!
I drove over here like a granny (55mph) and the 406 did it without needing refueling. And the fuel light still isn't on. Am doing some research to find the best and worst places for fuel. Norway is worst, obviously. I think Latvia is looking like the place to fill the tank, empty veg oil bottles, pockets etc.

Went to Aldi today and veg oil is E1.58 a litre. Rapeseed oil is E1.30 a litre. The cheapest diesel I've seen is about E1.41 a litre but I've got enough diesel in the tank to get me to Poland where diesel is around E1.25 a litre so not going to bother. However, the Aldi prices were for 1L bottles so if I happen to come across somewhere that sells bigger bottles for around E1 a litre then it's fill the boot time!

Careful filling with diesel the further east you go, fairly sure the actual diesel content gets less and less!! (not officially obviously)

Your British registered car needs to have a valid MOT to be driven in the EU. If you take it for the test before the trip and it fails you will be knowingly driving a car that is not roadworthy which is an offence and is something the police can check at the roadside. If you knowingly drive an unroadworthy car this can invalidate your insurance as a condition of your insurance is that the has to be roadworthy although this would only be in the case of an accident and not a roadside stop.
Andyborris =The penalty for driving with no insurance is six points, £200 fine and the car being seized which attracts a £150 recovery fee plus storage costs of £20 a day. Penalty for driving with no valid MOT is a statutory fine (£60) but no points unless the car is not roadworthy ( but there are very few police officers that can declare a cars state of road worthiness) which can lead to it being seized.

If you have a drive round Eastern Europe once you get past a certain point every other car is RHD/ British registered and a lot of them are absolutely hanging I'm pretty sure the above isn't being enforced.
Anyway he's already there and it hasn't failed as he said in the posts above. There is no provision (yet) in the regs for taking a vehicle for an MOT in another EU state so its difficult to know what they expect you to do if your MOT expires whilst out of the country.

Hi all,
Car has made it to Finland. I'm currently in a cafe 1km from the Russian border. The only problem so far has been a blown fuse for the cigarette lighter.
Heading for Sweden next, and then Norway.
Planning on getting back to the UK on 14th August, one day before the MOT expires. As long as the car is still more or less in one piece I'll MOT it. If it's terminally ill you'll see it advertised for spares on RR!

In Holland now. Due to get the ferry from Dunkirk tomorrow night.
Car has been fine apart from the anti-theft system temporarily killing everything for ten minutes after a few cigarette lighter fuses blew in quick succession. Can't quite work out how or why the anti theft system was triggered but taking the fuse out and putting it back in again seemed to reset it. That was five days ago and it's been fine since.
So 5000 miles down, about 450 to go to get me home.....

awesomes, no reason why it should not pass an MOT fairly easily unless you have been ignoring bits falling off I have noticed odd idle behaviours on alternative fuels myself too, most likely to be down to the viscosity and combustibility of the fuel being used.

Made it back to the UK.
The tickover thing is weird. The fast idle thing seems to be stuck in the on position, making the tickover about 1000rpm all the time. When I was at high altitude in Scandinavia it started working properly and you could hear it kick in and drop the idle to 900rpm when the engine was warm. When I got back to sea level it stopped working! Will probably go back to my original plan of clamping the cable.
