ok so i was given an old lawn mower with what i was told was a centrafugal clutch on it, so naturally my first thought was go cart. i decided that i wanted to make something a bit different to the usual flat frame seat no bodywork but i wasnt sure what then i saw this on you tube thats for me i thought so i set off for the shed and made a start i had an old ride on mower (a three wheeler ) but the rear axle was ok and it saved me buying or trying to fab one up so that was used, and a beam type front axle using mini hubs(happen to match the stud patern on my lawn mowers wheels)was made up and an old fiesta steering rack was cut down to size so at the end of the first night we had this sorry about the poor pics but i only get chance to work on this stuff at night so its usually dark anyway progress was good but looking at it it was never going to look in proportion with those tiny wheels so next night i experimented, bingo morris minor wheels fit and are massive so two sheets of ply later and the body was starting to take shape not much more to tell yet just did some more body work starting to take shape it is a bit bigger than i really planned though would be really interested to see what you guys think?

Hi mate likin the project. In the video it sounds like the guy is changing gears? Instead of using a lawn mower engine why don't you use an engine from an aprilia rs50 they sound the same but have a 5 speed box plus you can pick them up cheap! Are you going to cover the body when you finish or just paint it racing green and stick some spitfire stickers on it! Anyway I'm gonna bookmark you cos it looks interesting.

If you want skinny wheels / tyres gets some spacesavers. I got 2 recently off Freecycle and even on eBay aren't worth more than 99p !

will probably find a lawn mower centrifugal clutch will just slip and not be able to propel that amount of weight. unless it was a ride on.

some small progress to report cut some steel framework for the top to stop the chassis bending in the middle tacked it together and ran out of gas so on with the other jobs my go cart clutch arrived and fits perfect even matches the old ride on pulley on my axle so gona try that out no idea what the gearing is going to be like so we will try it and see got the engine sat in place inside the body fits like a glove i think some air holes and heat proofing will be needed failed to get the motor running it has an electronic ignition on it that apears to be shot so new one ordered i have done a bit more of the bodywork on the rear including most of the boot lid tahts about all thought i would finish with a shot of me in it for scale (even if i do apear to have been momenteraly possessed by the devil in it ) the keen eyed among you may have noticed that i have indeed welded the rear axle on back to front and as a result my go cart will go backwards DOHH!!! so i will have to cut it off and turn it round as the axle is very old and refuses to come apart never mind

Certainly an interesting project, I shall be watching progress. Can't help thinking that motor is going to struggle to get those diameter wheels rolling but I hope you prove me wrong.......

Can't help thinking that motor is going to struggle to get those diameter wheels rolling but I hope you prove me wrong....... not sure i will at the moment I'm working on the if i ignore the fact this motor looks way too small to push this along and my gearing is based on pot luck everything will be fine priciple we shall see but i am increasingly worried about it never mind hopefully wednesday i will be giving it a first test just to see if it moves, if not....well......cross that bridge when we get there

ok bit of an update pulled the body off (now i have the shape somewhere near)and added some steel for strength lined up the motor and almost finished mountings cut off the rear axle and welded it back on (the right way round this time ) looking at the pics now I'm thinking what a small engine for such a large thing (i hope it moves) also mocked up the steering i think with some fettling it will work pics time body off bit of framework and steering mock up engine placed doesnt look very big wednesday i hope to mount the engine in its final place and attach some steering and then you don't think brakes are NEEDED for a test run do you?

ok time for an update steering now done (needs tidying) but works hand brake done and finished the gearing first test run was attempted but a few problems were found one the engine kept stalling not sure if this is to do with gearing or engine not running very well i susspect it needs the carb cleaning but the test run was cut short as my step down gears i added to lower the engine speed were too close together and the chains were rubbing this caused the link in one of them to catch and it flew off, as it was already 11 o clock at night i gave up so I'm still not sure this engine is man enough for this cart but i will have to test it again when i have it running better. good news though the steering is lovely pictures ill fated idler gear hand brake even got the kids helping though mostly just posing for pictures lots left to do but i think i will gear it down a bit more get the carb cleaned and then try again, if that test is a faliure then i may have found a bigger motor and possibly a gearbox but thats way more complicated and I'm not sure i have room but we will see

well, it sort of moves under it's own power Could you fit a larger sprocket to the axle, lower the gearing a bit, put less stress on the clutch??
