Hi guys! I'm doing the ramshackle rally in August and one of the rules is you have to buy a car for under £100! Can anyone help? The more unusual and unique the better! I like unusual cars ;D The rally will be going from here to Poland and ideally I'd like a car that can bring me back again aswell! Also, an auto would be prefered, because one of my teammates can't drive manuals - otherwise I'd have to do all the drving. And - obviously asking alot - but if it has tax and MOT which would take me through august that'd be great! But any help appreciated. www.ramshacklerally.com/home.htmlCheers. Mark.

I thought so, I'm expecting to put the tax and MOT on myself. But still need the car for £100.

Welcome to RR I'd suggest scanning eBay (you probably knew that already!). Also the local free-ads, and if you know anyone outside London get them to look at their free ads paper too as cars can be cheaper out in the sticks. I think the Auto thing is going to be a real limiting factor. But some big early 90's barge that nobody loves any more could come your way for under a ton I reckon. Maybe not with much t&t though... Let us know how you get on!

Its the auto thing I'm worried about aswell. Damn teammate and her poxy half driving test! Good idea about looking outside london. I'd love a big early 90's barge, a granada or big volvo estate would be sweet.

Autofive - so negative! I've bought good cars for under a hundred. Example: Mk3 Escort 1.6 with about 6mths MOT and 2mths tax: £50 off eBay Volvo 264GL 2.8 V6 Auto. No tax or test but didn't need much: £80 from ad in corner shop window. Sierra XR4i (OK this needed a LOT of work): £100 I sold my Mazda 929 Estate to a group of lads doing a similar thing (Staples2Naples): £62. It made it too! There are loads of cheap cars out there! It's just a case of being in the right place at the right time

How many of these rallies are there?!
Get yourself friendly with some main dealers, especially the sort who have private buyers go to them – Skoda, Hyundai, Proton etc. Often they have a deal whereby everything has to go to auction, but ask nicely and they might find you something.
That’s the other option, get yourself down to the local auctions where the dealers send their dodgy p/x’s. Haven’t we just had a plate change? Should be plenty of stuff just come in which they need rid of. Again, might be better if you were out in the sticks.

Yeah I might do that, it's for charity aswell so maybe I could get a dealer to give me one if I plaster they're name on it.

I reckon Auto won't be an issue. I've seen T&T'ed Safranes and XM's go for double-digit figures on ebay, both luxo-barges, both auto, both just too big and too french to be in demand.
You might also see Volvo estates and the odd older-shape Granada but they'll probably need work for MoT.

Never trust a man Who names himself Trevor. Or one day you might find He's not a real drug dealer.

Thats what I'll do! Might even get a half decent car that'll make it past Dover!

Whats an XM? Are they both citroens? I don't do french cars... actually I had a renault 5 as my first car but thats the only normal car I've had. Safrane is a big Renault offered here from '93 to about '99- replaced the 25 - looks similiar to a Granada Mk3 XM is the big citroen offered here from 89 to about 99. It looks like nothing else! For £100, and leaving rare/unusual cars aside - you could get a MOTed early Vectra, Rover 414/6 or possibly a Mondeo Mk1 - all are reasonably unfashionable. Out of that lot I'd go for the Mondeo. Bear in mind scrap cars are worth at least £50 in most of the country so the days of free cars are over really.

negative? - yes
BUT realistic? - yes
any motor for a ton and under will need excessive money spent on it to mot - and with the price of scrap spirralling - the 100 quid banger is harder and harder to find

not many people know the value of scrap metal though, you should be able to find something on ebay or the local free ads.
alternatively, try your local freecycle

How do they check what you've spend on the car anyway - you could get anyone to write you a receipt for £100 for anything!
I know this is against the spirit of the thing, though.....

Try Auto trader - search for any make, any model and £1000 max price then wade through all the wanted adds to page twelve and find this:
200SX for £199 - got to be able to bargain them down - and its an auto
I can't get the picture to link or the hyperlink, but give it a try.
