2020 edit - all photo have been put into 3 youtube slideshows. Links in the final page of the this thread. Hi all, I've bought this about a month ago which is also my first "aircooled" car. Its beetle chassis 67 Covin 930 replica. Been off the road for about 5 years. Previous owner fitted a 1.6 xr2i 1600 engine but lost interested/arsed it up. this has got a good chassis etc but pretty sheddy as you can see. Pics as per the for sale thread Its the ideal candidate for what I want to achieve. I would have liked to get a early 911 or 912 but I don't have that kind of money (wife banned me)and I really don't fancy spending £5k on a rotten project car. I'm also not a fan of porsche running costs. I once read an article which said that a secondhand 911 will always be a £20k car....you either spend £20k up front on a decent one or get a cheap one and spend £20k doing it up. See the pic below, which is a 912 recently featured in a vw mag. This is the closest I can get to explain where this covin will be heading......also see the stuff magnus walker does...... cheers Matt

As you can see, its got a delightfully shoite interior - the epitome of poor kitcar building....mostly like from the late 80's early 90's the seats have a certain 80's chic to them...period corbeaus YO!

An "explore" around the car. it'll need a pair of new door handles with keys Doors will certainly need a tweak (normal for covins) I was pleased to see that the car was fitted with a really good wiring loom. its looks to be properly made. Fuse box will be upgraded to a modern blade type fuse at some point Wait..what...fuel tank is missing and it smells a bit pissy under the bonnet. i think there is water trapped inside the bonnet..... a bit grubby but all there. some nice stiebel air horns by the looks of it

the cockpit looks kinda like a 911 if you....have 10 pints maybe typical curse word mountney from the 80's. gauges are really expensive VDO's but are too small to look "right"

the previous owner bought the covin back in 2007 with a its tired 1500 beetle engine. he pulled this and fitted a fuel injected fiesta xr2i fiesta 1600 8v lump. he got an engineering company to fabricate the gearbox adaptor plate. the company in question was the original company that made the adaptors back in 80's The previous owner said " the starter motor isn't fitted because it blew whilst the auto electrician was attempting to wire up the engine"....then the car was left for 4 years. Ok then i said........ what ACTUALLY happened (ie me looking at the clues)..was that the engineering company drilled the bolt holes for the starter motor in the wrong place. it appears that the bolts for the starter were installed on the adaptor then the adaptor was bolted to the gearbox. engine then bolted up. starter motor whizzes over but doesn't turn engine over. electrician is puzzled but keeps churning the starter until it blows. he realises the starter motor cannot be removed because the bolt heads are sandwiched between the adaptor plate and the gearbox. Mr angry grinder to used to slice the starter motor bolts. weird marks.. wtf??

the starter solenoid is shiny indicating its been replaced. I benchtested it and the starter is healthy. bolting it into place and the teeth don't engage with the flywheel....so I removed the bolts, rotated the starter anticlockwise and held it in place. using the strength of ten tigers, it churned the engine fine. Basically, when i get the covin back home, i'll strip out the radiator and the exhaust manifold to allow enough room to get a drill in there to drill some new bolt holes. i think it can get at least 2 new holes drilled

Soooo...in meantime since buying the covin I've started to acquire essential parts to do the "backdate". fibreglass panels for early 911's can be obtained from a number of 911 specialists but keeping an eye out on ebay proved fruitful. a trip out to norfolk and suffolk last week got me this lot at a good price one pair of st rear arches "rs" style rear bumper standard early stle front bumper also got a second hand rear parcel shelf (will be retrimmed) some leather door pulls (not porsche) a single swb front horn grille (original) Matt
