Covins have an image problem, mainly because they never look quite 'right' due to the flared arches and use of wide wheels, spacers etc. As a lot use type 3 gear with a covin chassis, the stance can be off too and a lot are bodged....although most of the owner cars on the covin forum are done right but I bet if you asked the same 'aircooled' people about beach buggies and 356 speedster replicas, they'ed be all gushy about them. Underneath they are the same, running the same beetle or type 3 gear and handle the same as any other aircooled kitcar.
Obviously, if you stick a porsche 6 cylinder in, it'll drastically change the weight distribution compared to a normal beetle and also the chassis was never designed for big power. That's why I'm happy with 100-150bhp. It's about right for the chassis, plus it only weighs 850-900kg, power/weight ratio is good.

Well having owned a 1970 beetle that's what's drawing me to the covin as the beetle/type3 mechanics are simple and easy to work with and I love the noise from an aircooled flat four,my car had been set up pretty well suspension wise when I got it as was running koni shocks ,narrowed beam and it was lowered all round aswell but had no camber so I'm guessing irs aswell ,always enjoyed the driving experience of that car so thought why not build something with all the great looks of a 911/912 but for a fraction of the cost using vw components,from my perspective as a beginner what would you say would make for the easiest build,the beetle or the covin chassis car? I do apologise if I'm being a pain and I'm absolutely loving the updates on its progress Cheers

if you want stance then i'd get a beetle chassis covin. the type 3 front beam limits lowering ability and also are really expensive to repair/rebuild as they are limited supply now. Trouble is most are built on covin chassis

2015 hopefully to get it on the road. Still needs exhaust system, cooling system , handbrake, accelerator pedal and linkage, seats fitting gearstick fixing, 3/4 windows fitting, new brake master cylinder.....then trimming the interior

also, needs spare wheel well fabricating, bonnet opener linkage connecting........then lots of minor body tweeking...finish engine bay wiring...5hit

Thinking of going the Subaru route engine wise in the 912,I thought maybe mounting the radiator on the engine cover or off to the side like a Hillman imp or mini, how do you plan to cool your engine and do you have any advice/ experience with the cooling thing?

with a scooby engine, i'd mount the biggest rad that'll fit above the engine with a couple of fans pull air down through the rad.
in my current set up i'll have a rad sitting at the side of the engine (front-rear orientation) with a leccy fan and some scoops directling air up from the floor pan - bit like a classic mini arrangement.
