Had a very frustrating today and I would advise any potential buyer to stay away from the Datsun 510 SSS coupe for sale in Peterborough, and probably to avoid dealing with the seller "Max" Satar, who imports cars.
I had a long conversation on Sunday with him about the car and told him I was driving from London to see it. I asked a lot of detailed questions about it and he told me it had good sills, suspension mounting points, chassis, underbody, etc. Just rust in the body he said. Cue a six hour round trip to find a car with split chassis rails, sills as strong as popcorn with big holes and splits through the entire length of them. The firewall has a massive rust hole which has been covered with fibreglass. In fact this is one of the worst cars, structurally, I have ever seen.
People like that are just momumental timewasters and the dishonesty is pointless. What a waste of a day and what a sad state to see such a rare car in. The state of the car is not his fault obviously.
Beware the car, beware the seller!

Oh dear, that is sad to hear. I was looking forward to reading of your adventures getting it back on the road.

I had the same thing happen to me a few years back but I ended up in a 4 car motorway pile up on the way to see it, I got a lift back up the next day as my car was totalled only to find the car was a total pup, it's very annoying.

Yeah, and just to reiterate, what is annoying is not that the car was rotten as a soggy eggbox but that the seller lied to me about it and expected me to buy it when I saw it. What really made me laugh was a conversation that went something like this: Me: "This car is rotten as curse word, underneath the sills are perforated, there are cracks in the chassis and one rail has rusted away, I reckon it is dangerous to drive and the shell looks like it has twisted slightly due to the bodged repairs." Him: "Well it is a little bit grotty."
I can't believe I was so tolerant. I just laughed and walked away.

I had a similar experience when I looked at a Mini... Only I was thrown out the seller's place with rage & many curse words by the dealer. When I offered MY price

Went to view a Mk1 Fiesta a few years ago : "needs sills and arches". Peering into the front wheel-arch I could see the interior of the car :/ . Luckily I didn't travel far to view it.

Like a lot of above comments I went to see a Ventora in N yorkshire a fair few years ago, advertised as solid but paint needs a bit of work 3 hour journey found me looking at a basket case of biblical proportions sills - gone- wings front and rear - gone smoked like a shed on fire, missfired, seller said after much profanity from me 'I did say it needed a bit of work??'' I almost punched him

Just the pictures put me off this car. Even the ever forgiving eBay pictures make it look like a hound. Never mind, onwards and upwards.

That is a gutter indeed Charlie, as I was watching the Yahoo thread with popcorn at hand. I see the seller marked it as provisionally sold, was that you?
Was there any scope for severe haggling then due to the condition?
EDIT: this looks like i'm sharking for it instead, i'm not. Just curious!

The ad pretty much describes it as a full resto with dodgy repairs to sort out. I would always go expecting the worst when it comes to late 60s/early 70s J metal.

Severe haggling may have been an option but the car wasn't for me - I didn't want it even if it was £50. I think it is beyond saving. Just to reiterate, the seller told me that it was structurally sound underneath. I always fear the worst too, but was told that it was solid underneath. Charlie

I went to go and look at a '1 lady owner 25K 1500 dolomite, dry stored for 30 years, £700 or nearest offer needs TLC' last year.
I pulled off each sill by hand and poked through the majority of the front panel, scuttle, bulkhead with one finger... and when I got to the rear quarters the owners son begged me to stop.
I offered £150 scrap price and he said he'd rather hold out for the full price as he was sure it was worth the money. -_-

I feel for you mate. So annoying, isn't it! Another one best avoided, is Wallasey Motor Company, Wirral. I had similar experience. Went to view an AW11 MR2 last year. Was lied to over the phone. When I got there, it was a mess. Rear arches crumbling away, front wings, arch returns, sills etc. When I questioned it, a massive bouncer type character appeared, and we were physically threatened, plus he actually tried to hit my mate. All because we told them they were time wasting liars. I told them outright that I was not interested, but I was vexed at the pointless B.S. The salesman then tells me that the car is "mint". I laughed, and said I could pull it apart with my hands. He then points at the centre of the quarters, doors, even the engine cover(!) and tells me there is no rust - in the centre of the panels, I wouldn't expect it. We were called tyre kickers, who expected a brand-new car. He informed us it was a G reg, and would have a few bits that weren't perfect. Prick. We had travelled from Sunderland to Liverpool to see this thing, based on a few online pics, and the vendors replies to my specific questions. He was even so confident it was in great condition (I know its age, I don't expect it to be pristine) that he claimed he would refund my fuel money if I was not satisifed it was as described! I just Googled, to ensure I had the right company name, searched 'MR2'. Only an SW22 listed, but look in the background... That red AW11 is the very car I went to view - in September last year. Nuff said! As said above, I don't know what they hope to gain from this. Surely the OP, and I etc asking certain questions, and having some knowledge of the car in questions, means we know what a basket case is, and where the areas of concern are etc. So we won't just buy any old shed. I also got a flat tyre en route, so had to travel about 500 miles on a space saver.
