I think the time has come for this attractive little hatchback to be inducted into the world of retrospective motoring. In fact, its probably a bit late they`ve nearly all vanished, we must be quick! For those that havent had the pleasure: And lets not forget the Malaga: I bought one of these in `99, first car I ever really bought to use everyday. Still have dreams in which I am reunited with it. Learnt all the lessons in this one, including the one about remembering timing belts. How it lived another 2 years after I sold it is a mystery. Handled well, didnt rust, nippy enough (Porsche engine don't forget!) and I loved the styling - I have a theory that this would be how the MK2 Golf would have looked had VW gone back to Giugaro again - The Ibiza along with the Mk1 Golf is a Giugaro design and it came out just after the Mk 2 Golf.

My first landlady/housemate in the UK had one, she gave it to another housemate for £50 which covered the Tax. Car went to Scotland, did good service and was eventually bent beyond recovery on a snowy road excursion.... that ended in a tree / car interface.

Cant argue with that, £50 wont get you a train ticket to Scotland from a lot of places. Anyone know of any of these in hiding, or in good hands?

Wasn't it just the suspension that was Porsche-designed? Hardly see them anywhere now, there was a Seat garage just by the entrance to my old school and I remember them being brand new and looking really flashy.

Its confusing as to what was from whom on these, if I remember right the underpinnings were Ritmo/Strada, box was VW and the engine.....I don't know, but mine had "system Porsche" stamped on the cam cover so I don't know if that meant it was a de-tuned 959 lump or just that a teaboy at Porsche had said something in its general direction. To be honest I am hoping someone could shed light on this matter!

Hmmmm. the yahoo cars section appears on google as saying the engines were porsche-designed, nothing about the suspension. I may have made the whole thing up

Those who are of a certain age may remember Clarkson having a column in Performance Car. In said column, he said of the Ibiza "The Seat Ibiza is a disgusting little tool new, used it's even worse.........."
You show the me the Porsche that has that engine in it and I'll believe it's a Porsche engine. Until you find said Porsche, I will claim that my Escort has an F1 derived engine based on the fact that Ford called their early 90's F1 engine a zetec.

Engine and box was designed by porsche, by their engineering consultancy arm. Suspension and floorpan is nicked straight from a Fiat Strada.
I like these cars and have a lot of time for them.

just cos it was designed by porsche, doesn't make it a flat-6 turbo nutter! They also design toasters and coffeemakers but they've got rubbish 0-60 times. Looking at pictures of the engines they sort of look similar to VW blocks, most things in the same places. Having said that, most small uncomplicated engines are the same layout! Were Seat part of the VAG group back then? If so I guess it could be a VW lump, with a Porsche-redesigned piston ring or something. Seat System Porsche: VW Small Block 1.3:

The engine was a porsche design without a shadow of a doubt, but having owned one in the past I've got to say that it really only means as much as having a porsche designed toaster... Mine was smoky by 60k
The steering was a bit odd, and the suspension and handling fair rather than good IMO. Typical of the strada it was underneath.
Depending on year, a growing amount of VAG parts bin made its way into the interior and electrics. The SXi goes well enough though, and has plenty of mechanical grip. Parts can be tough to find though, the dealers have pretty much disowned them.
Of the two pics above the small block polo engine is vastly superior in build quality, and a very different concept.

I used to have a 1.5 SXi one, it was fun if not amazing in any respect.
There is a very rare (in UK) 1.7 injected version too, never tried one of those.

Bought one for my sister as a xmas present years ago to replace her mk2 Fiesta. It was the 1.0 jobby pre-system porsche engines. Very rattly, heavy breathing old fashioned engine but I liked it a lot. Handling was entertaining and a bit mad but great fun. Probably wasnt helped by transverse leaf spring rear suspension but it did the job. Seemed to be fairly roomy and reliable as well.

There was one on a drive way about 10mins away from me for £250 iirc.
Not long ago either 2/3 weeks or so but then it left the drive and was parked a little further up the road, so don't know if it was sold or just relegated from the drive.
It was very similar to the top one, wheels/colour etc.
Can go and have a quick look tomo if you want?

If it doesnt take you out of your way then yeah, see if its still there, nice one.
I was only having a turkish by plugging the Porsche engine bit, I know from doing 25k in one that it werent no flat six, it was a bit livelier than a lot of other 1.2s from that era though.(1.2 and 1.5 were Porka, 903cc was I think some sort of Fiat unit)

On the Porsche engine design thing I seem to recall rather dimly something about the Lada Samara engine having had Porsche do some work on it. I could be wrong and really hope I am
